Short summary

Frasier and Niles put themselves forward as candidates for two vacant memberships in Seattle's exclusive Empire Club; upon learning that there is only one vacancy, they try to sabotage each other at the opening cocktail party.

Niles (David Hyde Pierce) embarrasses Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) by insinuating alcoholism and mentions he acquired knowledge of wine from the bar maid with whom he "shacked up", meaning Diane Chambers in Cheers (1982).

The celebrity caller in this episode is Gary Sinise (Sid) who is incapable of talking on the phone with strangers unless he writes out everything he wants to say in advance.

Niles (David Hyde Pierce) mentions Frasier's (Kelsey Grammer) suicide attempt, which happened in Cheers (1982) Cheers: The Girl in the Plastic Bubble (1992).

This is the first time that Daphne calls Frasier by his name rather than "Dr. Crane."

One of the strengths of 'Frasier' was when the writers created episodes that pitted Frasier and Niles against each other, and this is one of the first examples of that.

It's not been an overly great second series of the show, but this is a better than average, and following 'Daphne's Room' provides a bit of consistency in quality which in my opinion has been lacking.

It tails off in the final few minutes, but on the whole this is a good, funny episode.
