Short summary

Fearful that he will be caught, Archie hits the road and ends up at a farm outside Riverdale, where he meets Laurie Lake. Meanwhile, after Alice takes extreme measures to ensure Betty's safety from the Gargoyle King, Betty finds herself up against a formidable foe from her past. Finally, after learning that La Bonne Nuit is in trouble, Veronica makes a risky business decision that could cost her everything.

The farm featured in this episode is the Kent farm from the CW series Smallville (2001-2011)

"Laurie Lake" is a character in an "Archie comics" series called Wilbur, which was published in the 1950s.

The Lake Farm is the same farm/set as the Kent Farm in Smallville. The farmhouse is the same painted yellow exterior for its appearance in Riverdale, as it was throughout the series of Smallville. Both series are filmed in British Columbia, Canada.

Riley Keough follows in the TV series footsteps of her famous grandmother, Priscilla Presley, the latter had participated in "Dallas" in the 1980s. She is the grand-daughter of Elvis Presley, who toured with Johnny Cash at one-time, thus the title of this chapter, "The Man in Black".

Jughead's alias name is Kal, this is the kryptonian name of Superman.

The music playing during the scene where Betty receives her fizzle rocks is the same tune as the one played in the iconic "medication time" scene from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

'The Man in Black' is a beautifully crafted episode which is divided seamlessly to 3 different but same story- One for Archie and Jughead,One for Veronica and the last for Betty. This episode had something that just clicked for me personally. The acting and directing was top notch. All the stories in this episode were beautifully weaved together. This season which started rough around the edges is starting to feel polished and more structured.

So overall I am very impressed and recommend this show and episode.

The Man in Black starts off good with Archie and Jughead hitting the road. Veronica's side of episode is also good and lastly Betty's was also good. A very good Riverdale episode in a very long time.

Sure this season doesn't have the essence it had back in season 1&2,but the gargoyle king mystery is so good. With each episode of season 3 comes an amazing shocking ending. This episode so far has the most shocking ending this season. The First two stories(Archie & Jughead and Veronica)were very nice ,i would like to see where they'll go.The Betty story was very shocking i could barely breathe, the twist at the end was just nice.It really keeps you wondering how dangerous and manipulative the gargoyle king is.The best part is that this season is about an ocult mystery, not magical stuff due to the new sabrina tv show. This season is very entertaining and i hope the reveal of the gargoyle king's identity is more shocking than that of the black hood and jason blossom's killer.

This was the first really bad episode since the first episode of the season. Riverdale was on a winning streak until this one, yet another 3-story anthology arc just like the dark side one they did in Season 2, which was executed much better. A huge issue that I'm starting to have with this series is the writing is REALLY forcing Betty as the only smart and capable character out of the Core 4. Jughead has become obsessed with this G&G game, Veronica's loyalties shift with the wind, and Archie is getting dumber, which I thought was impossible. In particular, in this episode, the writers had Archie do something that was completely stupid even for him. And I felt as if the Jughead-Archie farm adventure had the potential to be the most entertaining, but it was sadly cut too short after Archie's dumb mistake. Veronica's gambling subplot, which had the most screentime, was an utter bore. There's a huge irony upcoming after my summary of Veronica's part, but I honestly wish that the writers would limit her screentime (and therefore dialogue) more because Veronica is simply not a compelling or interesting character. To the ironic part! Betty's subplot at the Sisters of Quiet Mercy was easily the standout from a writing and acting standpoint, but it is becoming very clear that the writers are pushing Betty into the Mary Sue of the show, as if she isn't there already. A very hit-or-miss character, Betty is given the deus ex machina treatment far too often for my taste, although it was less so in this one as she made some pretty believably crafty chess moves to try and outwit both Ethel and the Head Nun. Also, very unpopular opinion among the Riverdale fandom, but I enjoy Ethel Muggs! I think she's a hoot of a character and brings a sorely needed dose of humility to the Core 4, especially Betty and Veronica, both of whom think the world revolves around them, so I don't seeing them get knocked down off their high horses. I think fans are way too hard on Ethel, especially when the 2 self-appointed Queens of Riverdale Betty and Veronica have done some seriously shady stuff. I mean, how will Bughead ever survive a blackmail induced kiss from the criminal mastermind that is Ethel Muggs? Stay strong Bughead fans! LOL
