Carolee reassures a frightened Julie that there won't be an emergency while she's on her first night desk duty. Gary wants a sedative to sleep and talks with Julie about being an orphan. Fred slips onto the ward and hides while Julie is away from the desk attending to Gary. Julie catches Fred, but she mistakes him for a doctor. Carolee shares with Matt news of Mrs. Allison's terminal illness. Just as Fred is about to enter Gary's room, Julie spots him again, but he orders her back to her post. After she walks away, he enters Gary's room. Gary awakens. Fred grabs a pillow and puts it over Gary's face. Matt and Carolee drop by the desk to see how Julie is doing, and while they talk, Fred smothers a helpless Gary.
