Short summary

Having bought a Gannex mac like Harold Wilson, Harold hopes to be chosen as the ward's new Labour candidate and calls a party meeting, watched by a baleful, Tory-supporting Albert. However Albert comes to his son's defence when the local party agent Stonelake announces that Harold has not been selected as the prospective candidate because he is too working class and the party are out to court the middle class vote.

The writers had a lot of fun making Albert a Tory and Harold as a socialist. In some ways there is some perverse logic here. Albert talks about his impoverished childhood, working class background but like Alf Garnett he is a Tory voter.

This episode was shown almost a year after Harold Wilson was elected as Labour Prime Minister unleashing the white heat of technology.

Harold hopes to be selected as the new Labour candidate for the local elections. He even turns up to the selection meeting with a mac and pipe just like Wilson and so does Stonelake the local party agent who aims to puncture Harold's ambitions by telling the ward that they have selected a more aspirational candidate to attract the middle classes.

Harold reluctantly goes along with it but Albert gives Stonelake some choice words.

As someone once heavily involved in Labour Party politics, that branch meeting bought back memories. It seems little changed from the 1960s to the 1990s apart from the b branch motions to bring a ceasefire moved from Vietnam to Northern Ireland or whatever hotspot that existed at the time.
