» » Steptoe and Son The Colour Problem (1962–2016)

Short summary

Sick of watching his old monochrome television through a magnifying glass, Albert wants a colour set but Harold uses the money to buy a sports car to take new girl-friend Muriel to Brighton. When Albert wanders off and ends up in hospital suffering from amnesia, Harold sells the car and buys a colour television instead to jog Albert's memory when he takes him home. But Albert seems to remember quite a lot as it is.

While Harold is flogging his guts out Albert is watching horror films on his ancient black and white television through a magnifying glass.

Harold is saving up to buy a sports car. He dreams of driving in the French Riviera with a lovely woman next to him decked out with fancy sunglasses. In fact he hopes to impress girlfriend Muriel to Brighton.

Albert on the other hand wants a 33 inch colour television. Albert chides Harold that Charlie Miller got his father a colour television. Harold reminds Albert that Charlie is a gangster.

After a heated argument Albert walks out on Harold and is later seen wandering around in a distressed state with little recollection of who he is. At the hospital he does not recognise Harold but he can recall Samson the horse.

Of course this makes Harold feel guilty but I Albert putting on an act again?

Ironically an episode about buying a colour television only exists in black and white. The colour episode presumed to be lost or destroyed. As always Albert's selfishness shines though, he never did make the tea for Harold after a hard day's work.
