Short summary

On August 6, 1945, the atomic bomb exploded over Hiroshima. Little known is the fact that among the estimated 140,000 casualties of that day were 12 American prisoners of war held at the Hiroshima Military Police Headquarters since July 28, when they had been shot down during a bombing raid. For decades, many of the families of these 12 Americans were never informed as to the fates of their loved ones. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Mr. Shigeaki Mori, himself a hibakusha (A-bomb survivor), the names of these 12 are now included in the Hiroshima Peace Museum, and the relatives have learned the truth. Paper Lanterns documents the story of Mr. Mori and his dream of reaching out to the relatives of these lost airmen.

Mr. Shigeaki Mori, featured throughout the documentary, is the man President Obama hugged during his visit to Hiroshima in May 2016, an encounter covered with great interest in the U.S. and international new media.

During a question and answer session in Lowell, Massachusetts after a screening of the documentary in March 2017, the director explained that the film had been screened for the U.S. Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy and that after the screening, Ambassador Kennedy sought out Mr. .Mori's address and then arranged for Mr. Mori to attend President Obama's visit to Hiroshima.

During a question and answer session in Lowell, Massachusetts after a screening of the documentary in March 2017, the director explained that the film had been screened for the Emperor and Empress of Japan on Christmas Day, 2016.

This film has inspired me to become a more globally-minded and peace-minded citizen. Mr Mori, the A-bomb survivor featured in the film, is one of those rare human beings who has been able to look past the horrors he experienced in war and see the human beings on the other side of the battle. Definitely recommend, especially for young people and students!
