Short summary

Egghead steals the Gotham City charter. He finds a loophole that could give him control of Gotham City if descendants of the original founding families (including Bruce Wayne) do not pay nine raccoon pelts to Chief Screaming Chicken on time. Not only is he interested in stopping the payment, but Egghead believes he also has a lead on Batman's true identity.

This marks the first appearance of Egghead on the program. While no such character exists in the DC universe, Egghead was a longtime Marvel character who fought various members of the Avengers.

In this episode Edward Everett Horton portrays Chief Screaming Chicken. This was a sly nod to his character Roaring Chicken on the TV show F Troop (1965). During their network runs the two shows appeared back to back on Thursday nights.

Egghead's gang members Benedict, Foo Yung and Miss Bacon all have egg related names. Additionally, the two men are balding, although not completely bald like Egghead himself.

Egghead calls the mind-reading machine he puts Bruce Wayne in an electro thought transfer. In The Man from U.N.C.L.E. episode The Foxes and Hounds Affair from 1965, Vincent Price guest stars as Victor Marton of Thrush, trying to get at a similar mind-reading device: the electronic thought translator.

The second day of filming on Monday, August 29 1966 was planned for work at Fox Hills on Stage 9 with the Chicken Shack Interiors, followed by filming on New York Street for the Jewelry store, rear steps of City Hall and two Gotham City street scenes. However, filming on the movie Caprice (1967) pre-emptied the Batman unit from using New York Street and they had to return three days later to film the scheduled scenes.

The title is a play on the title A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Actor Ben Welden appeared as Egghead's henchman. He also played a henchman several times on the Superman tv series thus making him the only actor to be arrested by tv's Batman and Superman.

"An Egg Grows in Gotham" kicks off one of the greatest two parters of them all, writer Stanley Ralph Ross bringing out the best in the incomparable Vincent Price, his character of Egghead referred to as 'the rottenest egg of them all' and the smartest criminal that the Dynamic Duo have ever faced. Yet what tips the scales into the stratosphere of brilliance is the surprise casting of beloved comic actor Edward Everett Horton in the role of 'the last of the Mohicans,' Chief Screaming Chicken (a play on his Roaring Chicken character on F TROOP), who sells tacos and pizza at his roadside teepee outside Gotham City. It's time for the ceremony celebrating the founding of Gotham City when the Waynes, the Tylers, and the Savages leased the original property from the Mohicans at a price of nine raccoon pelts, though Chief Screaming Chicken would like to bow to inflation and up the ante to 12 pelts! Every exchange with Horton is a comic gem: "Indian poor businessman, my cousin, ooh...he sell Manhattan for 24 dollars, could have got 35!" Egghead manages to steal the Gotham City charter, revealing a clause that would enable him to foil the traditional event, thereby reverting Gotham City back to the Mohicans, in this case Screaming Chicken: "you no Indian giver?" Descendants Bruce Wayne, Tim Tyler (Steve Dunne), and Pete Savage (Albert Carrier) are dutifully kidnapped, but for another purpose, so that Egghead can deduce which of the three millionaires must be Batman, using a thought transference machine to drain the knowledge out of Bruce Wayne's brain!
