Short summary

The Mad Hatter has escaped from prison, and is on a quest to add Batman's cowl to his collection of hats. He attends Gotham City's annual headdress ball disguised as the Three-tailed Pasha Of Panchagorum, and snatches a large ruby off of columnist Hattie Hatfield's headdress. The villain makes a getaway, but not before turning Batman's cowl pink with a radioactive spray. He trails Batman to the Atomic Energy Laboratory, knowing he will have a chance to snatch his cowl when it is removed for decontamination.

This is the first time that Batman appears in a cowl in a color other his usual dark blue, when the Mad Hatter turns his cowl pink.

This is the second consecutive story in which someone refers to Robin as "Wonder Boy" (the first being the Sandman in "The Sandman Cometh").

Partially based on a comic book story published in Detective Comics 230.

This episode marks the only time that the George Barris replica Batmobile (#4) appears on the show. It is mostly obscured but still visible in the bat cave.

The Mad Hatter claims that the bearskin he possesses was taken from a British Army Foot Guardsman at the very moment he was trooping the colour for the King. The annual Trooping the Colour ceremony is a massive parade of the United Kingdom's most senior Army units, held in June to honour the Sovereign's Official Birthday. At the precise moment during that the colour is trooped, the Ensign bearing the colour is surrounded by over a thousand of the UK's most elite troops, two hundred horses, and at least three hundred musicians, plus the Sovereign and the entire Royal Family.

The Mad Hatter is the only villain, besides the Penguin, to wear a top hat. The Mad Hatter's is gray, and the Penguin's is purple.

"The Contaminated Cowl" marked the one time only return of David Wayne's Mad Hatter, a role he apparently despised, but never displays in another all out energetic performance. Set to cap his criminal career by snatching Batman's cowl, the latest impersonation by Jervis Tetsch is that of the three tailed Pasha of Panchagorum, snatching a ruby from the headdress of Hattie Hatfield (Barbara Morrison), and spraying a radioactive substance in Batman's face, turning his cowl bright pink. It's off to the Atomic Research lab of Professor Overbeck (Leonid Kinskey) for decontamination, only to be followed by The Mad Hatter and his goons, therein trapping the Dynamic Duo in a fluoroscopic cabinet to be reduced to skeletons in seconds under high voltage x-rays! Hat check girl Polly is a substantial role played by pretty Jean Hale, former wife of Dabney Coleman.
