Orpheus retreated after the death of his girlfriend Eurydice and has drifted into a melancholy world of delusion. To preserve Orpheus from insanity, the underworld sends him the enigmatic Chauffeur, who in his sedan carries Eurydice's spirit raised from the dead. Eurydice is to give Orpheus a last chance to say goodbye. Shortly after Eurydice's arrival the job gets out of control. Orpheus, who doesn't recognize that Eurydice returned merely as a spirit, refuses to let go of her. The Chauffeur turns to bring Orpheus to reason, but Orpheus has already lost his mind. Blinded by grief, he deems himself able to defy the laws of the underworld and tells the Chauffeur to leave. The Chauffeur has no choice but to take away Eurydice by force.
