» » Xena die Kriegerprinzessin Beware Greeks Bearing Gifts (1995–2001)

Short summary

Xena and Gabrielle arrive to Troy during the Trojan War when the warrior princess is required by an old friend, Helen. While Xena tries to win the war, Gabrielle meets Perdicas, her ex-fiancé, who's working now as a mercenary for Troy.

The title references the English saying "Beware Greeks bearing gifts". That is based in a sentence from the Eneid, in which Laocoön says "Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes", meaning "I fear Greeks even bearing gifts". In the episode, it's Xena who says the saying.

The "disclaimer" in the end credits reads: "No oversized Polynesian-Style Bamboo Horses were harmed during the production of this motion picture. However, many wicker lawn chairs gave their lives."

The Spartans in this episode have a Southern US accent. While obviously untrue from a historical perspective, portraying Spartans with a Southern accent is a longstanding tradition in American re-enactments of ancient Greek plays.

First appearance of Scott Garrison as Gabrielle's ex-fiance, Perdicas. The role was played in Xena die Kriegerprinzessin: Sins of the Past (1995) by Anton Bentley.

The "new" Xena kills less often than then "old" Xena, but still quite often. In this episode she kills one Greek with her sword and one with her chakram during the ambush and a third one in the fight inside the city walls. The "new" Xena's body-count after this episode is 23.

Helen of Troy has asked Xena and Gabrielle to arrive to Troy and look to end the war with the Greeks.

The Greeks are building a Trojan Horse but someone close to Paris has his own desires for Helen.

Xena uses the wooden horse to get people out of Troy when the Greeks later take it out with them.

Meanwhile Gabrielle meets her ex fiancé Perdicas who is working as a mercenary for Troy.

The episode has a nice use of the Helen of Troy story while Gabrielle looks wistfully at old flame Perdicas.
