» » Mary Tyler Moore The Six-and-a-Half-Year Itch (1970–1977)

Short summary

With Edie away visiting her sister, Lou is looking for someone to hang out with for the evening. To get out of hanging out with Ted, Lou agrees to a dinner and movie with Mary and Rhoda, who were going out anyway. At the movie theater, they run into Lou's favorite son-in-law, Bill Phelps, on a date with a woman named Patti Woods, who doesn't happen to be Lou's daughter and Bill's wife, Sarah. Beyond taking out his frustration and anger on the staff at the newsroom, Lou doesn't know what to do about the situation except avoid Bill and Sarah until he does. Bill ultimately stops by the newsroom to have a chat with Lou. Their discussion brings the situation into a clearer light and a better understanding between father-in-law and son-in-law.

Though later episodes would mention Lou's 2 daughters - and one would even feature a brief on-camera appearance- this was the only episode to focus on them, or more accurately, Lou's daughters.

Elizabeth Berger who plays Patti Woods, the woman his son in law has a date with, would later guest star in an episode of Lou Grant. That's Show was a spin off of Mary Tyler Moore starting the year after MTM ended.

This one is a bit disturbing at times, I have to admit. While Edie is away, Lou is trying to find things to do. In order to avoid Ted, he decides to join Mary and Rhoda for a movie. When they get to their seats, there sits Lou's son-in-law. After some really tense conversation, a young woman comes in. It turns out she is with the guy and a really uncomfortable few moments take place. It is obvious he is stepping out on Lou's daughter. Lou manages to keep it in. Rhoda, who was in the lobby getting some candy, is clueless. There are a few moments where she comes to realize what is going on. There is also a really funny call to Lou's wife where he realizes he can't tell her what is going on. What I found a bit unsettling is the ridiculous excuse the guy uses when he finally see Lou. But it's also quite touching when Lou explains his anger.
