Short summary

Barry and Team Flash track down a meta that is stealing high-tech weapons, only to cross paths with a new foe named Cicada, who is hunting the very same meta, with nefarious intent.

Cisco links Cicada's ability to control his lightning dagger to Thor being able to control Mjolnir in Marvel comics, making it the third reference to Thor on the show. Thor was previously mentioned in the episodes Elongated Journey Into Night and When Harry Met Harry.

Trying to shake Cisco out of his thoughts, Ralph whispers to him "Han shot second", making him angry. This is a reference to the famous controversy regarding the edited version of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope over who shot first, Han or Greedo, in the Cantina sequence.

This is the first episode not to feature the opening monologue.

This episode introduces us to Chris Klein's mysterious villain, Cicada. This is a character who has only made a handful of appearances in DC Comics. He was created by Geoff Johns and Scott Kollins back in 2001 as a Wally West villain.

Cicada was originally supposed to appear as the second cliffhanger scene of the season 4 finale episode, We Are The Flash, but it was cut due to time pacing and constraints, and the scene was used in the trailer for season 5.

In the comics, David Hersch/Cicada was an enemy of the second Flash, Wally West, and who also killed people with a lightning-shaped dagger, with the goal to collect energy to resurrect his wife. He had been struck by lightning and given immortality, as well as the ability to drain energy from others. Instead of a mask, he had a long white beard, and his name came from the sound emitted by him when he used his powers. There was a cult that Cicada led in the comics, but due to his adaptation having a close visual similarity to Alchemy from Season 3, the cult was likely dropped from the show to avoid too many similarities with Alchemy.

This is the sixth episode in the series not to feature Tom Cavanagh, who appears as a new character, called Sherlock Wells, in the next episode, The Death of Vibe.

It's mentioned that Cicada breathing sounds like a cicada; it's also similar to the sound of Darth Vader's respiratory breathing from the Star Wars franchise.

Cisco to Caitlin " Shhh..... do you smell something?" Ray Stantz said the same thing in Ghostbusters (1984)

A reference is made to Yogi Bear and his catchphrase "I'm smarter than the average bear." Tom Cavanagh, who plays the many versions of Harrison Wells, played Ranger Jones in the live-action Yogi Bear movie. Coincidentally, this is one of the few Flash episodes not to feature Cavanagh.

When Ralph and Cisco are checking to see if they still have their powers, Ralph says to Barry "negative, Ghostrider", a direct reference to the film Top Gun (1986).

Tonight's episode was petrifying, after watching the newest episode I felt a sense of fear from the newest antagonist. After having season 3 antagonist to be much disappointing, I find that I will definitely enjoy season 5's new antagonist. Moments where a superhero should feel nothing but almost being defeated by the antagonist are moments that I look for in a strong antagonists. Tonight's episode really hit some pressure points as we know more about Snow's backstory and we really see a group of characters develop such as Barry and Joe finally getting a side talk that changed so much in the story. I'm proud to say that I'm scared of this new antagonist "Cicada" and I worry for team flash as any good antagonist should make their first impression. I look forward to episode 3.

I'm a fan of all things dc tv. Arrow, Flash, Legends,Supergirl, Black Lightning. I'm in it for the long haul bad Episode or Good, no bad review is going to change my mind. This Episode wasn't exactly what I expected. But it was still great.... Can't wait to see how he stops Cicada. Though I have a feeling Caitlin Might have a part in stopping cicada. Considering, she's not really a meta-human by dark matter or the Particle Accelerator.... I like how it's a new bad guy each episode and the big bad is secondary until they find away to stop him in a Flash.... Pun attended lol. I don't like how some shows do 1 organization of bad guys or a big bad for 22 or 23 Episodes like Season 5 and 6 of Arrow. The One thing I like Is being wrong on my hunches, I love the guessing games they do.... Some people like the answer now and then and doesn't want to watch the full journey to get there....

Season 5 of The Flash is going down a good path. Thanks to the interactions between Barry and Nora and how interesting Cicada looks. The episode was only Ok until Cicada appears and fights the Flash Team in the last 6 minutes, which shows how threatening Cicada can be.

+Barry and Nora dynamics +The Cisco B-plot is actually really funny +The last 6 minutes -The Cecile B-plot isn't good

CW has brought their game this year. An excellent follow up to last weeks season premiere. Their were obviously low points in the episode like the situation with Cecile, but we have to remember that it's just character development since she is a series regular this season. Good running scenes and this weeks villian was just a means to set up a first showdown/encounter with Cicada. Interesting move by the writers to have the first showdown this early in the season, but it keeps you wanting more. The highlight of this episode was that first encounter followed up by a trailer for next weeks episode that has us Flash fans longing for more.

And if you haven't done so yet, watch Arrows season premiere.. absolutely excellently (this is here just to drive the point home that the CW has listened to the fans and really pumped out some quality episodes in these first two weeks.

Cicada reminds me of Naruto with his dagger.

Was Jessie L. Martin injured before the season started shooting? Did he break his leg? I only ask, because in every scene he is seated. When he does "walk" upstairs, there is a quick cutaway from him, then what looks like a body-double walking up the stairs far in the background.

This is a common trick to deal with actors that have sustained injuries off-set. The Big Bang's Kaley Cuoco did this when she broke her leg horse riding. The producers had her seated (usually with her legs under a blanket) or propped up behind the bar at the restaurant.

Iris is the mover this ep, doing all the investigating and figuring out because everyone else is busy with personal stuff. Too bad there's no way to hide the fact that everyone had to be sidelined for her to be relevant. Nothing she did in this ep couldn't have been done someone else. But shoehorn gotta shoehorn. Also, she's upset that Nora is ignoring her but is fine with the supposed love of her life, her soulmate staying disappeared. But then Iris' motto has always been everything-is-about-ME-or-it-doesn't-matter.

I was surprised Barry and Nora told everyone the truth. Maybe the writers learned their lesson. Also, this is the most screen time Singh got in 4+ seasons. Hope they keep this up.

No interest in Cecile or her subplot. But I can see that it's to sideline Joe to make way for Cecile, and Iris as well.

Joe's dad talk makes me miss his and Barry's S1 interactions so much. He's still the best dad in DCCWverse. Also, I hope Jesse Martin is ok, he's sitting in every one of his scenes. I need him back on CCPD and team Flash. Oh wait, Iris won't allow that...

Only good thing about Cisco's heartbreak was we get to see real team Flash as friends helping each other, another S1 echo that I've missed. But S1 did it better because it was little moments here and there rather than a subplot devoted to it.

Nora, so far, is me. Not here for Iris or her WA nonsense, especially as Barry hasn't changed his last name, so every time she brings that up, she's really pumping up herself (and Nora surprise surprise). But I'm sure all too soon the writers will have it so that Nora is all over Iris and hates Barry.

That first encounter between team flash and Cicada was typical Flash. Slow. Boring. Ridiculous. Everyone just staying in place and getting depowered and taken down because.

    Score: 6.5

Flash unfortunately doesn't keep its momentum as it focuses on the wrong things such as Cecelia losing her powers which was totally lame, the comedy relief used for Cisco's breakup was sub-par at best. On a positive note we got to see iris back in the field. Cicado proves to be an intersting villain as he humliates team flash.

Another solid episode of "The Flash". This episode deals with more of season five's (I'm guessing whole season, as that is what has happened in the four complete seasons thus far) main villain "Cicada" and also throws in another Meta in the mix. Whilst I wouldn't say that this is stronger than the season premiere, it is still a good episode.

The development of Barry and Nora is what propels this weeks episode from being just "Okay" to being "Good". Truly, these two are definitely the most interesting duo this show has ever thrown onto our screens. Well, besides Barry and Oliver, because they're Barry and Oliver, but still, this duo is terrific.

Originally, in the season premiere, Cicada isn't given screen time until the very end of the episode, before I began watching this episode, I thought that would be the case for episode 2 as well. Except, for the first time ever, a villain has been given real depth in the second episode of a season. I'm loving this, my major complaint with all of the Flash villains is how most of their story is just thrown into the back end of the season (Episode 9 and above), this was the case with Savitar, who we barely even knew until several episodes into season three. That was definitely not the case with this episode as Cicada makes his presence felt in Team Flash when he murders the meta that they've just caught.

I enjoyed this action scene (with Barry, Cisco & Ralph fighting Cicada), although, Cicada took the powers of multiple members of Team Flash but when Nora shows up he stops... this is quite an odd move, I hope they eventually explain how this occurred.

The Cisco subplot where he is trying to get over Gypsy is decent and also very funny at times but I couldn't help thinking about what Nora and Barry were doing at the same time because they're just a much more dynamic and interesting duo to watch.

Overall, its a great episode with quite a few memorable and quotable lines included and a good villain introduction into the team. I enjoyed it, its a small step down from the premiere, but its still a fun time.

A LIST OF PROS/CONS FOR THE EPISODE:

    Pros:
    • The dynamic duo of Barry and Nora
    • The Action scene between Cicada and the three members of team flash.
    • A great conversation between Barry and Joe
    • The line "Cisco Is Smarter Than The Average Bear".
    • "The Book Of Ralph" & his "27 steps to get over the love of your life".
    • Cisco subplot is good.
    • Nora almost eye rolling when Iris says "Team West-Allen".

    Cons:
    • Cisco subplot drags a little toward the end.
    • Cisco suddenly can vibe when Barry needs him?
    • Cicada not getting rid of Nora's powers... that made no sense.

    FINAL VERDICT: 7.5/10

I love Flash, its great, but can we not over shadow the action with the stupid 'funny' scenes which take WAY too much time up, like the vibe and gypsy thing...completely took me out of the episode, I understand they needed something to do with Catlin and Ralph but come on, the main story is the new bad guy/gal. The thinker from last series was absolutely spot on.

Again, Barry/Nora chemistry was quite nice. I didn't like "squeezing" villain and this episode seemed quite unscripted. Why Barry and Nora told revealed everything so soon? The only thing I liked was the Cisco comedy. My ratings (based on what I marked on IMDb): Season 1: 200/23 = 8.69; Season 2: 193/23= 8.23; Season 3: 188/23= 8.17; Season 4: 146/23= 6.65 and Season 5= 13/2= 6.5

The presence of Nora Allen is still a bit of a mixed bag for me. I'm more than done with the goofy and innocent part of her character that continues to mess up in action, but I still think there's plenty of room for interesting story plots with her character going forward. Also, the idea that they will once again have to "change the future" feels unoriginal and derivative. Are we really going to go down that route again with Barry going missing? The first official appearance of Cicada also drew some eyes this week as we think he may be the lead villain for this season. He looks ridiculous but his powers do seem to pose some sort of legit threat, though doesn't it seem too similar to how DeVoe? You know removing another meta-humans powers, seemingly for your own power? At any rate, it wasn't exactly the most exciting episode nor eventful, but I can appreciate the show feeling a sense of urgency in giving us Cicado so soon in the season, that is if he's truly the big bad of the season.
