Short summary
Last WCW PPV matches for Bret Hart, Kevin Sullivan, Mike Rotunda and Steve Williams.
This was both Kristina Laum's WCW debut (as Leia Meow, the cheerleader for the reunited Varsity Club), it was also her first-ever appearance on a PPV and on national television in general.
PPV debuts for Midnight (Ann-Marie Crooks), Johnny the Bull (Jon Hugger) and Jon Hugger (in his atrocious "Oklahoma" gimmick). It was also Crooks' only PPV match ever.
Bret Hart defeated Goldberg (Bill Goldberg) by submission when special referee Roddy Piper came out and called for the bell as soon as Hart locked in the Sharpshooter, similar to the Montreal Screwjob. This match is also notable for the multiple concussions Hart received, which ultimately led to Hart's retirement the next year and subsequent stroke in 2002.
Received an official VHS release in the USA (catalogue number T7219). Also received an official VHS release in the UK (catalogue number S0T7208).
Vince Russo's stable the Powers That Be was filled with references to Russo's previous employers WWE. The tag team Creative Control (Patrick (Ron Harris) and Gerald (Don Harris)) were named for Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco. Mike Jones was renamed "Shane" for Shane McMahon (as he had previously been named "Vincent" for Vince McMahon, a shot at how Vince McMahon had named him "Virgil," for Dusty Rhodes's real name Virgil Runnels.) Ed Ferrara's "Oklahoma" gimmick was a shot at Jim Ross.
Dave Meltzer's The Wrestling Observer Newsletter gave the Disco Inferno (Glenn Gilbertti)/Lash LeRoux (Mark LeRoux)-The Mamalukes (Big Vito (Vito LoGrasso) and Johnny the Bull) match 3 1 /2 stars and the Chris Benoit-Jeff Jarrett Ladder Match 4 stars, both out of the maximum five stars.
Second and final PPV match for Asya (Christi Wolf).
Featured "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan teaming with the reunited Varsity Club ( Kevin Sullivan, Mike Rotunda and Rick Steiner, w/Leia Meow) in a loss to the Revolution (Shane Douglas, Dean Malenko, Perry Saturn and Asya). The match was the first time Sullivan and Rotunda had teamed since their loss to the Steiner Brothers (Rick and Scott Steiner) at WCW/NWA the Great American Bash (1989), which had marked the end of the Varsity Club. It also marked Sullivan's first PPV match since Chris Benoit defeated him in the Retirement Match at WCW Bash at the Beach (1997), and Rotunda's first PPV match under his own name since his win over the Iron Sheik (Khosrow Vaziri) at WCW/NWA the Great American Bash (1990). Duggan was opposing the Revolution because the group, which had formed over Summer 1999 led by Chris Benoit in opposition to WCW's emphasis on older wrestlers, had turned anti-American. The Varsity Club turned on Duggan, and, this being WCW under Vince Russo, there was no follow-up and it never led to anything and was promptly forgotten and never mentioned again.
WCW PPV debuts for Big Vito (who, as Skull of Da Baldies, had made his PPV debut a month before at ECW November to Remember 1999 (1999)) and the Harris Brothers (who had debuted as Jacob and Eli Blu at Royal Rumble (1995)).
The PPV suffered an abysmal 0.23 buyrate.
