Short summary

Police officers Lise and Clovis met three years ago near a lake, while investigating the disappearance of a young teenager. Their work has taken them elsewhere, to the shores of another lake: Annecy, where they face the challenge of a new family life with their nine-month-old son Tom. As the couple takes on a demanding new investigation, Clovis gets secret calls and terrifying visions - and begins to reveal a dark side. To top it off, the corpses of two women have just been found, one right after the other. Lise and Clovis have no doubt: it must be the work of a serial killer. This reawakens painful memories for Lise, who must face her past while Clovis confronts his own demons. But the two of them will have to pull together and work as a team if they want to succeed in tracking down the killer.

Barbara Schulz, who played Lise Stocker in Le mystère du lac (2015), declined to reprise her role and was thus replaced by Julie De Bona, nine years her junior.

The mini-series was shot between October 26th, 2016 and March 13th, 2017, with a two week holiday break from December 24th to January 8th.

This French crime drama can be looked at as the second season of 'Vanished by the Lake'; protagonists, policewoman Detective Lise Stocker and her partner gendarme Clovis Bouvier have moved to Annecy; another lakeside location with their nine month old son. A series of murders provides the backdrop to the story; it appears that a serial killer is targeting women he meets online. As the investigation progresses it seems that the killer has access in inside knowledge and Lise suspects that Clovis is hiding something from her.

Having enjoyed 'Vanished by the Lake' I had high hopes for this series; while I did enjoy it I don't think it was quite as good as the first. Barbara Schulz, who played Lise in 'Vanished' is replaced by Julie De Bona; this wasn't a problem though as she isn't too different and does a fine job in the role. The story provides some good mysteries; as well as the identity of the killer there is the question of the woman who appears to haunt Clovis' memories... the latter question is resolved sooner leaving the conclusion to the question of who the killer is and how they stay one step ahead of the investigators. As the end approaches there is still a variety of suspects and the identity of the killer is far from obvious... my guess was incorrect! The tension increased nicely to the point that by the end I was on the edge of my seat. Overall I'd definitely recommend this to fans of 'Vanished'; even if it isn't quite as good it is pretty close.

I enjoyed Killer by the Lake, but couldn't help wondering if there are any vacancies in the French police force. They obviously pay enormously well, as the husband and wife couple Lise and Clovis live in a really big house, with immaculate new furniture and fittings. And they have a pretty good new-ish car too. Lise's mum is put in a very luxe looking old people's home which can't have been cheap - esp as we're told the mum's house burned down in the previous series. So not a lot of family money, and who's paying the care home bills?

Odd too that Clovis and Lise's house is so immaculate - no clutter or junk anywhere - I didn't spot a newspaper or a book or any clothes dumped on the sofa. All the more remarkable considering they have an 8 moth old baby - in my experience those family members generate a large amount of stuff.

I'm also struck by the fact that no one puts a password on any of their kit - laptop, mobile, all open and turned on all the time so that when a copper sneaks in and opens a laptop it instantly displays what he's looking for. You have only to pick up a mobile to see what chats the owner has been engaged in. That helps the pace of the drama no end.

Some odd decisions are made - the wife of the bad guy confronts him alone in the house to ask about the 5 murdered girls - not wise, I fear. And then towards the end the lady cop also goes alone to confront him. Not wise either.

But enough carping - it moves on fast, lots of action, and a strong ending. We're left to surmise what happens to the perp and his two little girls as their car leaves the road on an alpine pass.

In theory, 'Killer by the Lake' has all the ingredients for a classic detective thriller: a complex plot, three-diemnsional police characters with intereting personal lives, decent acting, and a gorgeous Alpine backdrop. But somehow, as with its predecessor series 'Vanished by the Lake', it just feels a little too formulaic. Our screens are full of detective dramas, and it takes something special for one to stand out: in this case, all the elements are lined up, but there's no unique ingredient that brings it to life. You'll see many less professionally-made series, but there's a certain lack of inspiration here.
