Jocabed is the story of a marginalized people at the mercy of a heartless sociopolitical system and the power of sacrificial love to change it. Set in a war-torn dystopia, men are scarce and children are gathered from the poorest barrios to be raised and serve as soldiers from birth. Our protagonist, a poor Hispanic immigrant, falls in love with an opportunistic polygamist who pressures her to conscript their unborn son to the military for financial gain. Faced with this decision, she must choose between following her husband's orders and saving her son. Jocabed aims to hold a mirror to the social issues of our time--immigration, warfare, marriage civil rights, abortion, and poverty--while simultaneously telling the personal story of a mother in crisis.
