A young prospector, Joseph Harbison, starts out on his journey, and en route meets a group of prospectors playing cards. He enters into the game, with the result that he makes a considerable winning. Leaving them, he continues on his journey and meeting a gypsy woman and her daughter, decides to have his fortune told. Drawing out his bag of money to pay the girl, he excites the older woman's cupidity and she invites him to remain with them, which he agrees to do. Calling her daughter aside the mother suggests that she make advances to the young man to gain his confidences and when he sleeps they will secure his money and decamp; but because he was a light sleeper they fail in their attempt, and when morning comes he resumes his journey. Further up the road he comes upon an emigrant wagon of home seekers and is invited to ride with them. Attracted by the beauty of the daughter of the old colonist, Harbison accepts their kind invitation. When evening comes they stop to camp. In the ...
