Short summary

Will is sent to the hospital in the Hawkins Laboratory but the doctors can not find a reason for his pain. Murray makes many copies of the tape to send to the newspapers. Meanwhile Dustin and Steve find that Dart has escaped from the basement digging a hole out. Bob joins Joyce in the hospital while Dr. Sam Owens shows Hopper the size of the Gate. Will awakes with no memories and Dr. Owens finds that he and other hosts are connected to a hive through a virus. He discusses with the other scientists how Will's brain has been affected by the shadow monster. Steve, Dustin, Lucas and Max use pieces of meat as bait expecting to catch Dart in the junkyard. But the creature comes with other Demogorgons and trap the kids in the bus. Out of the blue, they return to the tunnels to attack the soldiers that had been sent there based on Will's information.

This is the first episode not to feature Eleven, and the first time one of the main cast is listed as credit only.

The motion detector beeping sound is the same as that in Aliens - Le retour (1986).

The series is well known to draw influence from Stephen King's books and movies. The song playing over breakfast with Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and Murray (Brett Gelman) is "Blue Bayou" by Roy Orbison. This song heavily features in the book/movie Dreamcatcher, l'attrape-rêves (2003) by Stephen King, a story about a group of kids who make friends with a supernatural, psychic boy ego helps them fight aliens and work against a government agency, trying to keep it under wraps.

The scene where Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Steve (Joe Keery) are throwing meat on to the railway line, is reminiscent of scenes in both Les dents de la mer (1975), and Stand by me - Compte sur moi (1986).

Both Winona Ryder and Paul Reiser have been involved in the Aliens franchise. Paul (Aliens - Le retour (1986)), Winona (Alien, la résurrection (1997)).

The scene where Joyce yells at the doctors about not know what's wrong with Will shares a strong similarity to a scene in The Exorcist (1974) where Ellen Burstyn berates doctors for not knowing what's wrong with her daughter Reagan.

When the leader of the assault team says, "Stay frosty, boys", it is an homage to Aliens - Le retour (1986) where Michael Biehn's character Hicks says the same thing when entering the facility with his assault team. Another quote reminiscent from Aliens that can be heard is "I don't see sh#t, man". In both instances, the teams are ambushed and massacred in the end.

The scene where the research facility is monitoring their soldiers via radar tracking devices in the tunnels of the upside down is reminiscent of (and quite possibly an homage to) the scene in Aliens - Le retour (1986) where the marines enter the alien nest. Both scenes featured actor Paul Reiser watching the process through a monitor.

When Steve (Joe Keery, Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Max (Madmax) (Sadie Sink) set a trap for Dart in the old junkyard, they use steel mesh and iron sheets to add protective armour to the bus, a reference to the armoured bus used in the second Mad Max film (Mad Max 2: le défi (1981)) as a gate to the petrol refinery Mad Max is helping to defend.

When the fog moves in on the soldiers in the tunnel prior to the arrival of the "demodogs", a sinister laugh can be heard. It's heard again as Hopper (David Harbour) looks down at the tunnel opening.

The scene where Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) are in their separate rooms, hesitating about getting together, very clearly evokes a similar scene between Indy and Willie from Indiana Jones et le temple maudit (1984).

When Bob (Sean Astin) looks at the map he asks if X marks a treasure. Sean was in Les goonies (1985) looking for a treasure where X marked the spot.

Dustin gets Steve to help deal with Dartagnan the demogorgon, which has tunnelled its way out of the storm cellar. Nancy and Jonathan get it on. Will clearly has a symbiotic relationship with the shadow monster, suffering ill effects as a result. Max opens up to Lucas about her past. And Dr. Owens' men explore the subterranean tunnels.

Lots more going on in episode six, with just as many unanswered questions to ensure that you keep on coming back for more. The quieter, relationship-driven drama is, as always, handled very well, but for me the highlights of this chapter are the exciting showdown against the demogorgons (yes, plural!) at the junkyard, and the finale, in which Owens' men are attacked by the creatures as the doctor helplessly monitors their deaths on a screen (a scene reminiscent of the xenos attacking the marines in Aliens; Paul Reiser must have felt right at home).

My goodness! What intensity! Once Dustin allowed that little slug to take over, a price has been paid. It appears that this is only one of the many creatures that have taken over underground in this little town. Will is the carrier of the virus and he is at the center of everything. His family cares about him, but he is incredibly dangerous. He speaks for the prolific life form that seems intent on a taking over. In another plot development, El has moved in with her aunt. That leaves Hopper out of her life. His volatility has caused this, but that's just the way he is. Nancy and Jonathan finally connect in a way other than two people facing evil. Information has been fed to big newspapers to set the groundwork for some serious investigation. The boys, along with Mad Max, take on the little monster, and they are about to become lunch when something directs them to a meeting place. Will has the way. He is at the beck and call of this life force and it brings about death.

This episode has a lot of emotional weight to it and this feels like the episode where everybody's character development is about to start up and you are going to see where all of the characters are about to become by the end of the season. It is funny to see Steve and Dustin talk about hair and Dustin arguing about Mews and how they were eaten as well as the fact that Hopper is starting to take on the upside down and he is sorry for how he had treated Eleven the entire season to that point in time

This was the best episode of the season to this point. The right amount of action, a cliffhanger at the end and even some romance thrown in. The show has always been about replicating the 80's style of movies, but this was like a mini 80's movie in its own right.

The season hasn't quite matched Season 1, but this was a step in the right direction.

Dustin and Steve get some development, which although it comes during a mundane Demogorgon hunt which doesn't carry any tension until near the end of the episode, it is nice to see Steve is actually transforming into a nice person. The showdown with the Demogorgons is intense and seeing there's so many of them is a real shock. Where did the others come from?

Will's scenes are even more gripping. What's so clever about it is how Will suddenly appears to know how to hurt the creature without being hurt himself and tells the scientists how to do it. It feels like it's going to be a fairly predictable plot, until you find out he was setting a trap for them all along. Will is the spy. The only way that final scene could have been improved is if some characters we actually care about had been killed by the Demogorgons.

Other character development isn't as good. Jonathan and Nancy's subplot has been out if place and it's hard to care about it. And the scene where they kiss is... it's as if the writers tried to think of the most cringey way possible to execute that scene. Elsewhere, the real surprise about finally finding out May's backstory is how mundane it is.

In "Chapter 6", Steve, Dustin, Lucas, & Max set a trap with chum, leading Dart to a dump in the hopes of destroying him. They quickly realize their mistake as Dart has grown and attacks them with some newfound friends. Meanwhile, Nancy & Jonathan help Murray make copies of the tape to release to the press. They spend the night at Murray's and end up in bed together. The Hawkins Lab can't figure out how to fix Will, although they now realize the full extend of Will's connection to the Upside Down and the monster creating the tunnels. He feels its pain and helps the monster set up a trap, killing the men sent into the tunnels with Dart & friends and a fog machine. They appear to be heading for the lab as we hit credits.

The dialogue in this episode was atrocious. The scene where Max & Lucas have a heart-to-heart on the roof of the bus was painful to watch; people don't talk like that, they don't reflect like that, especially children. There is no subtlety in this scene. It's suppose to develop the characters further but the Duffer brothers have no trust in their audience and decide to spell everything out for us so we don't have to do any critical thinking. Max's lines are unbelievable.

I'm not sure whether I love or hate the character of Murray. Brett Gelman is feeding us a enormous ham sandwich in his scenes; it keeps things interesting to say the least. But maybe his overacting is exactly what this show needs.

I feel like every episode I grumble about this but the 80's references and nudges need to stop. I was pulling my hair out when Nancy & Jonathan were doing the Indiana Jones bit where the two love interests talking to themselves, distraught in their rooms, only to emerge and see each other. Ugh...
