Short summary

Kiley begins seeing Sister Mary Ellen, whose church is working at a group home for mentally challenged and at-risk youths. One of Mary Ellen's charges is an autistic teen-aged boy named Dougie, whose only companion and friend is a dog. One day, Welby - during a visit to the home - is attacked by Dougie's dog, and the dog is immediately quarantined under suspicion that it might be rabid. Dougie is deeply upset when he is told that the dog may have to be destroyed (after it begins showing signs that it indeed is rabid). As Welby recovers and Dougie's younger brothers - who lack the understanding about what rabies is - make cruel jokes about what might happen to the dog, Mary Ellen seeks to find a way to reach out to Dougie before he makes a mistake ... only to learn from Kiley that Dougie is a burglary suspect at the animal shelter where his beloved dog is being kept. In the end, just as the dog is about to turn on Dougie, Kiley has no choice but to destroy the dog, leaving Mary Ellen ...
