Short summary

The czar of a frontier town has Bart thrashed to steal back his gambling losses, which angers even the boss' mother. Mom and Bart conspire to get Bart's money back, and teach the arrogant boss humility. As the scheme pressures the despot, he prays "Lord, give me patience, but give it to me now !" Bart enlists his dying pal, the gunfighting dentist from Philadelphia, Doc Holiday as insurance.

Bart makes a rare post-Season 3 Bret Maverick reference when he makes Bret the beneficiary of his life insurance policy. In conversation with Doc Holiday, Doc asks if Bret himself might kill him for the insurance money. Bart at first denies it and then considers for a moment, saying: "Still, we haven't been too close lately"--a sly reference to the fact Garner had left the series the season before and had only appeared in one episode of the 4th season ("The Maverick Line") that had been shot at the end of Season 3.

This Maverick story has Alan Hewitt town boss proving to be a very sore loser at poker and so he has Jack Kelly worked over and the winnings taken back. But Ed Nelson who is Hewitt's brother is feuding with him and he offers Kelly a proposition to get his winnings back and teach Hewitt a lesson in humility.

Do you remember the classic Abbott&Costello film The Wistful Widow Of Wagon Gap? It's where Lou Costello supposedly shoots Marjorie Main's husband and he escapes the noose because there is a law that says he can beat the rap by agreeing to support the widow. And whoever shoots Costello inherits supporting Marjorie Main and her tribe of kids.

Among Hewitt's enterprises is life insurance which Jack Kelly takes out a policy and the pay out to the now departed James Garner from the series would be considerably more than what Hewitt owes Kelly.

For a little insurance on his own Kelly gets Peter Breck playing Doc Holliday to be his bodyguard.

A few twists in the story you might not see coming makes this a fine story.
