Trailers "Trial by Self (2011)"
The scenes shot at the Grayson house were shot at director, Brandon Allen Powell's grandmother's house, where the director lived during the production. The director's grandmother also prepared all of the meals for the cast and crew.
A lot of footage was lost and a lot of the movie was re-shot over the next several years as actors became available again. Some actors were unable to re-shoot their scenes and in some instances, scenes had to be quickly re-written and a few smaller roles even had to be re-cast. The re-shot scenes were shot even more quickly than the original scenes had been and with an even smaller crew and less equipment.
Actors chose and supplied their character's outfits from their own wardrobes. They also used and applied their own make-up. All male actors wore no make-up at all.
Although the movie was scripted, the scenes were often changed a great deal on the day of shooting to accommodate the location and actors that were available. Also, dialogue was changed to better fit the actor's natural speech patterns.
All scenes taking place in the Fisher's home were set up and shot in under four hours. This was a rule set by the owners of the house because they were living there at the time of the shoot. Another interesting thing about this location is that the house belonged to the director's parents and was one of the houses that he grew up in.
Cat Angle caught poison oak while shooting the Hi-8 home movie that a character watches in the movie. The footage was shot at the same location as the park scene and although many other actors and all of the crew were exposed to it, only Angle was effected by it.
The actor who was originally cast as James quit the production only a day before he was due on the set. Because actors were due to fly back home, Powell needed a fast replacement. Luckily, his uncle, Robert W. Powell agreed to join the cast the day before his first scene was to be shot. As a matter of fact, the actor has still not read the entire script. He was only aware of the scenes he was in.
Actor James Byron Houser shot his scenes on weekends because he had a paying job during the weekdays. Robert W. Powell similarly juggled a job and the shoot. His scenes were shot late in the afternoon when he got off from his job or on the weekends.
Exterior scenes were all shot with available light and no artificial means of lighting was used on these scenes (except those that took place at night). Some of the interior scenes were shot using only the practical lights that existed on the location. Most of the interior scenes that were shot in this manner were shot later during the re-shoots. The reason is that they had less time, less equipment, and no crew to complete the scenes during the re-shoots.
The movie was awarded "Best Supporting Actor in a Female Role" by the Sunset International Film Festival - Los Angeles.
A version of the film was accepted into the 8th annual Gen Con Indy Film Festival.
The film was accepted into the World Music and Independent Film Festival in 2012. The festival nominated the film for four of its awards. These awards include "Best Director of a Feature Film" (Brandon Allen Powell), "Best Screenplay for a Feature Film" (Brandon Allen Powell), "Best Actor in a Feature Film" (James Byron Houser), "Best Supporting Actress in a Feature Film" (Amanda Branham).
The film was accepted into the St Tropez International Film Festival in 2013. The festival nominated the film for seven of its awards. These awards include "Best Film of the Festival," "Best Feature Film," "Best Actor" (James Byron Houser), "Best Actress" (Cat Angle), "Best Supporting Actress" (Jessica Guess), "Best Cinematography" (Brandon Allen Powell), and "Best Editing" (Brandon Allen Powell).
