The Girl who Walked Quickly is a tale about a phobic who we see being brainwashed by total immersion and being made to work for a murderous organisation. I shan't give away what happens, but the violence is quite graphic for a show that went out before 9pm.

The trouble with the show is that it sets up a lot of intriguing ideas and never really pays off on them. We see the hero's parents and the scene seems to suggest something horrible happening in his past: but it never really goes anywhere. We don't know what the terrorists are trying to achieve and also the ending seems a bit rushed. The problem might have been the focus being split between the hero's story, and that of his girlfriend and tutor who are trying to find him.

Not perfect, but worth a look if you like 70s psychological thrillers.

David Cooper is a vastly intelligent student, a man with a phobia of lifts and confined spaces. David is kidnapped by a group of Political extremists intent on discrediting the government, they use a procedure of sensory deprivation to brainwash him, getting him to plant explosive devices in public places.

I rate this serial quite highly, sensory deprivation was quite a popular theme back in the seventies, I recall an episode of The Omega Factor featuring an almost identical plot. It is very much worth a look, a young Denis Lawson features as young David.

I felt the introduction of David's mother was a little strange, her total lack of concern or care seemed pointless, maybe just filling time.

All in all though, it's very watchable, particularly for the first episode, which puts me on edge seeing him under the water, it makes me feel uncomfortable watching, it must have impacted on people when it first aired. 7/10
