Black Jake is the terror of the little village of Monson, and especially of the "Half Moon" Saloon. Entering in his usual manner, he is greeted by the crowd of prospectors, who are all more or less afraid of him. Here be insults a prospector named Heathman, who is sitting at a table with his little daughter, and an open quarrel is only prevented by the other men. Later Heathman is working in his claim, while Jane, the little girl, is preparing a meal when Black Jake rides up. Dismounting, he walks up, and kicks over the iron pot in which Heathman's dinner is cooking. Raising his pick, Heathman makes as if to strike, when Jake fires and the prospector rolls over. Little Jane falls on her knees by her father's side, while the murderer rides off. The shot has brought an Indian and his squaw on the scene, and hastily the little girl tells them of what has occurred. Quickly the sheriff is informed, and a start is made for the desperado's hat.
