Short summary

The film tells the story of an intuitive, adventurous man who loved his country and being Brazilian. This man fought to be loyal to himself. His music is a transparent portrait of his genius, intuition, freedom, adventure and passion for Brazil. The story shows aging Villa-Lobos going to a gala concert in the Theatre of Rio de Janeiro for a tribute in his honor. This is the last time he is coming out of his house alive. His looks are feverish and attentive. Different scenes of the concert will bring back memories of his life. Villa-Lobos suffers a great many ordeals: the violence of his father, his mother's sadness, the disaffection of Lucilia, his first wife, the inability to have children, the unacceptance of his art, the possible loss of Mindinha, his great love, the abyss between genius and madness. The pieces of this game recreated chronologically conform the personality of Villa: energetic and fragile, humble and megalomaniac, amorous and egocentric, brilliant and naive, ...

This film show us the story of Heitor Villa Lobos,a man who loved music, his country and being Brazilian. From all his trouble and difficulties to live for his passion, the music, to how he became the best known classical composer born in South America.

''Villa-Lobos - Uma Vida de Paixão'' has an incredible cast, with many famous Brazillian actors and actresses, like Antônio Fagundes, Marcos Palmeira,Letícia Spiller,Ana Beatriz Nogueira,Marieta Severo,José Wilker and so on. I liked this movie very much, showing the life of the great musician and composer Heitor Villa Lobos, very respected here in Brazil and I believe in other parts of the world as well. Villa Lobos wrote numerous orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works, and many of his work we can study in the music schools here in Brazil. In Villa-Lobos's youth, Brazil underwent social revolution and modernization, overthrowing its emperor Pedro II in 1889, and abolishing slavery. That's why previously, only European music had been the dominant influence, and why Villa Lobos is considered to be a modernist: his music has the influence of Brazil's indigenous cultural diversity, and is based on Portuguese, African and Brazillian elements. He was a patriot, in love with his country and culture. That's why he never really left Brazil, and felt offended when people asked him to lie about his origins.

I recommend for people who enjoy music, to listen to the ''Bachianas brasileiras'',a series of nine suites for various combinations of instruments and voices. For everyone who is interested in a good movie, as well as an interesting biography, this movie is an excellent choice to watch.

The Only Good Thing About this movie, really, is it's soundtrack. Oh, yes, and Jose Wilker's acting. The rest is amazingly bad. Bad directing, bad script, and, most of all, horrible acting. Marcos Palmeiras is specially bad at depicting such a great musician. It's very disappointing that the life of such a man fell in such incompetent hands to be depicted. Don't take this as an example of brazilian cinema.
