Joining in on an ICM poll for the best movies of 1927 rather late,I started looking for shorts from the year. Expecting Disney to be the lone animated entry to be easy to find from the year,I happily caught the tail of Felix by pure chance.

    The plot:

On Halloween night Felix the Cat goes in search of a girl cat to hang out with, Instead of being the cat who got the cream,Felix gets caught up in the witching hour.

    View on the film:

Carving into the Halloween atmosphere, director Otto Messmer draws Felix's Halloween night with spooky surrealist touches, via transformations of objects and witches digging into the punk design of Felix. Whilst having plenty of rough edges, Messmer impressively gives the flying broomstick scenes a real sense of movement,as Felix plays trick or treat.

Felix the Cat goes in search of a pretty cat on a Halloween evening and instead encounters a hideous witch.

This cartoon plays, as do so many of the Felix cartoons, with transformations. This was a typical gag of 1920s and early 1930s cartoons and it was facilitated by the rubber tube style of animation Certainly, the association of Halloween with creepy goings-on like turning toads into frogs or taking the back end of a horse and attaching it to a bicycle's front wheel plays with the concept in a novel and frightening, Frankensteinian theme in a silly fashion. Ideas like this and their offhanded execution where among the many reasons that Felix was the leading cartoon star of the 1920s.
