One of the last episodes with Ward Bond in it, it was aired posthumously concerns The River Crossing. A river with a bad reputation for quicksand has risen during a flood and Ward Bond has only gotten half the train across. Robert Horton and Frank McGrath are stuck with the other half and they're in a bad place.

That's because some idiot colonel played by Charles Aidman attacked a Comanche village and massacred the women and children, blowing up a peace treaty. The body of one of his officers was found near the village. The only problem was that it was Kiowas who did the deed as Flint McCullough tells him upon seeing the arrow.

The Comanches are understandably on the warpath and they reduce Aidman's fort to rubble and send him and aide Ron Harper scurrying to the Wagon Train for protection. Ironic since the army is supposed to be protecting the settlers.

This episode illustrates the old maxim that one well placed idiot can screw up the work of many good people. It takes a lot of patience and diplomacy for Flint McCullough to use to get the Wagon Train through this problem.
