This is a documentary that follows two boys a punker named Cody Perkins and a boy with a drunk dad who lives in a trailer named Chris. Cody lives with his grandma because his father killed his seventh wife a stripper and then himself, Cody's real mom died when he was young. Chris lives with his Mom, Dad, Grandma, Sister, and apparently a brother who you never see. They struggle in everything they do especially Chris. Chris starts the school newspaper and Choir both of which he gives up on. Chris is actually very intelligent and is one of the best speakers around. Cody writes punk Christian songs. Cody's girlfriend's dad (now his father in law) does the theme song for the series. It is actually quite depressing at times but great. You should watch this documentary. It is available on PBSs website.

This is an incredible look at the lives of two beautiful boys growing up in rural Arkansas. You grow to love these boys even though they make mistakes like average teenagers. I'm not much of a crier during movies, but this documentary really moved me. I must say that the director did a very fair job of portraying families that weren't necessarily functional, but at the same time were very decent and loving people in their own way. The teachers who run the "David School," are very patient and loving, and the principal (Mitzi,) is one of the best educators I've ever seen portrayed in film. I just wish that all of our educators would be as encouraging as she was (sadly she retired during the film.) I recommend this film to students who are studying psychology, sociology, or future teachers and counselors. Kudos to the director and the participants :)

I agree with the other reviews- this is a great show- even tracked down and bought the DVD before they were selling it on the internet- however it takes place in Kentucky, not Arkansas.:)to be exact David,Kentucky. I missed the first night it was on PBS but made sure to catch the other two nights.I definitely recommend this to everyone,no matter what age you are there is something in it you can relate to.Check out the web page as well- there's updates and things that the were not shown on TV or the DVD.The other shows this director has done are just as good they are def worth watching as well, especially the Farmer's Wife. Both are def worth adding to your DVD collections.
