Short summary

George decides to convert to Latvian Orthodox to impress a girl, against his angry parents' objections. Meanwhile, Kramer converts a nun at the church, and Jerry takes a peek in his girlfriend's medicine cabinet and is stunned by what he finds.

Bruce Kirschbaum didn't know that the Latvian Orthodox Church was a real faith when writing the episode. Its adherents thanked the show for bringing attention to it.

The exterior shot of the Latvian Orthodox Church is actually the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord, in Greenpoint Brooklyn. It is on the National Register of Historic Places (1980).

When Kramer meets with the High Priest to discuss his "kavorka" there is a Scientology pamphlet visible on the desk. The letters LRH for L. Ron Hubbard and OT8, (Scientology lingo) are briefly visible.

Sasha, played by Jana Marie Hupp, is shown to live in apartment 5E, but previously it's been stated that is Newman's (Wayne Knight) apartment.

Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) and George (Jason Alexander) are both shown to be left-handed in this episode.

Molly Hagan plays the part of Sister Roberta. Kristin Davis auditioned unsuccessfully for the role but would later be cast as Jenna in episodes 8.16 Сайнфелд: The Pothole (1997) & 9.1 Сайнфелд: The Butter Shave (1997).

In order to cheat on his test, George (Jason Alexander) writes the notes on his hand. When he holds up his hand however, in the priest's office, the notes on his palm are visible

Two alternate endings were filmed for this episode. In one, Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) agrees to take Tawni (Kimberly Campbell) & her cat to the vet but they make a stop at Elaine's (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) as she has the cat fungicide that Jerry thought was Tawni's. At the same time, Elaine's boyfriend discovers the fungicide in her cabinet and leaves. Tawni discovered what was really going on with Jerry and the doctor was attacked by the cat. In the other ending that wasn't used, Elaine took the fungicide that Jerry put in her purse & asked the podiatrist (Tom Verica) his opinion. He told her the medicine was for cats, not humans.

I just love the twists of events they use in this show and they are as good in this episode as in all the others. Jerry finds a fungus cream in his girlfriend's cabinet and gives it to Elaine because her boyfriend is a podiatrist. Jerry also makes fun of podiatrists in this episode saying that they are not real doctors and that George can become one if he goes to podiatry school. Meanwhile, Kramer meets a nun and dumps her later because she decides to forsake religion for his love! Jerry finds out that the cream is for his girlfriend's cat and Elaine's boyfriend finds the cream in her cabinet.

Of course George who is the star of this episode as in all other episodes decides to convert to Latvian orthodox for a lady.

George Costanza: You know, in the cab on the way over here, I actually thought about converting. Jerry: To Latvian Orthodox? George Costanza: Yeah, why not, what do I care... Jerry: Ya know, it's not like changing toothpastes. Elaine: I think it would be romantic. George Costanza: Really? Elaine: Yeah, it's like Edward the Eighth abdicating the throne and marrying Mrs. Simpson. Ooh. George Costanza: King Edward. (snapping fingers) George Costanza: Like King Edward, Jerry! Jerry: Yeah well King Edward didn't live in Queens with Frank and Estelle Costanza.

Season 5, Episode 11, "The Conversion" "The Conversion" isn't one of the strongest or most consistent episodes in Seinfeld's fifth season, but it is one of the funniest. George's and Kramer's story lines don't make an ounce of sense, but they're so funny that you just can't resist. Michael Richards and Jason Alexander both deliver side-splittingly hilarious performances.

Jerry and Elaine are far less impressive, their stories interact but not in a very interesting way, and they feel more like season 2 material. That stops the episode short of being truly hilarious all the way, but it still has its share of classic moments.
