Short summary

As part of Walmington's patriotic effort to finance a Spitfire, the platoon practices Morris (spring fertility) dancing. It's sissy to Scotsman Frazer's taste, except wielding the whiffling stick like a club, which upsets Jones. His nerves suffer because his sweetheart, lively widow Mrs. Fox, now accepts attention from old town clerk Gordon. At Jones' request the captain is going to talk to her. Alas that starts new suspicions. Things worsen when Fox auditions for the part of Lady Godiva, in fleshings, which stirs jealousy from the platoon's ladies.

The platoon wants to raise money to build a Spitfire. Their main contribution to the forthcoming Walmington-On-Sea parade is to be morris dancing ( that bizarre pastime whereby people in white clash sticks whilst hopping about like children waiting to use a public toilet ). Hodges hijacks the hall to audition girls to play Lady Godiva. The eventual winner is Mrs.Fox.

Jones consults Mainwaring on a most delicate matter. He has been seeing Mrs.Fox ( they have been enjoying pork chop dinners together ) but has heard on the q.t. she is also seeing the town crier. He asks the Captain if he will try to sort things out. Mainwaring meets Mrs.Fox at the café. Tongues starting wagging...

From the seventh season, the first to be made without James Beck. The show badly missed him, of course, but was still fun to watch. I'm glad they resisted the temptation to show us Mainwaring's wife. From the little we see of her, she must look ( and probably sound ) like Peggy Mount. Rosemary Faith, who plays the waitress, was 'Daisy' in the ill-fated fourth season of 'Please Sir!'.

Funniest moment - Mainwaring collapsing after seeing his wife playing Lady Godiva. "He'll never get over the shock!", says Pike. Fraser adds: "Neither will the horse!".

I've said it several times, but worth saying again, Pamela Cundell truly shone as the sweetly spoken and feminine Mrs Fox. A hilarious episode which features some truly hilarious moments, The Morris Dancing, the intimate tea between Mainwaring and Mrs Fox, and of course the scene where the good Captain discovers his wife's parading down the Street's as Lady Godiva.

It's funny the whole way through, the show's strengths are played on the whole way through, Pikey's naivety, Fraser's wild eyed ramblings, Captain Mainwaring's decency, the fact we never get to see Elizabeth, and of course the effect of Mrs Fox on Jonesy.

    Classic episode. 9/10

Rather more of the townswomen of Walmington-on-Sea in this episode but it's not one of the best.

A few good lines and some funny scenes, though, as the village goes 'en fête' in order to raise money towards the building of a Spitfire. Fundraising, whether real, or through investment in National Savings, helped villages and towns in the UK to 'connect' with the war effort by 'sponsoring', for example, a new aircraft or warship.

Captain Mainwaring tries to be a good 'divisional officer' and help out Corporal Jones but his choice of the café for a meeting is a mistake. The village gossip is ahead of him.

Elizabeth Mainwaring, his demanding wife, 'features' more than usual in this episode but one still never sees her!
