» » Batman The Londinium Larcenies (1966–1968)

Short summary

Commissioner Gordon travels across the channel to Londinium by request of the President to assist in a spree of baffling burglaries. Also aboard ship are Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, their manservant Alfred and Gordon's daughter Barbara. Alfred sets up a make-shift Batcave under a rented mansion near Londinium while Batman & Robin visit lord Ffogg and Lady Peasoup, who run a girl's finishing school that teaches their students a degree in shoplifting.

Superintendent Watson's office at venerable Irish Yard is a redressed version of Commissioner Gordon's office, with a portrait of Sherlock Holmes hanging behind Watson's desk.

Maurice Dallimore had earlier played the British United World Delegate in the 1966 Batman movie, and Sir Sterling Habit's in The Bat's Kow Tow.

"The Londinium Larcenies" began a three part storyline that didn't have enough plot for two, featuring the dull as dishwater Rudy Vallee unconvincingly cast as Special Guest Villain Lord Marmaduke Ffogg, fortunately supported by the marvelous Glynis Johns as his sister, Lady Penelope Peasoup. Venerable Ireland Yard is (inexplicably) baffled by a series of thefts of snuffboxes and priceless Russian easter eggs, and a call to the President of the United States leads to Commissioner Gordon's office, assured that he'll be accompanied by Batman and Robin once they arrive across the pond. Barbara Gordon initially passes on making the fog bound journey, until learning that Batman will be there, then she quickly accepts Daddy's invitation! Maurice Dallimore (previously seen in "The Bat's Kow Tow," as well as the 1966 feature film) as Superintendent Watson has an office identical to Gordon's, and dismisses the notion that the man made fog that covers the escape of the thieves has anything to do with the esteemed Lord Ffogg, living at Ffogg Place of Ffoggshire. As students of Lady Penelope (frequenting Barnaby Street), Nannette Turner, Lynley Laurence, and Aleta Rotell did little more than these entries, while Stacey Maxwell and Lyn Peters had more extensive careers. Lyn's Lady Prudence, daughter of Marmaduke, casually confesses to the Boy Wonder to a life of crime, that she and the others graduated with an MS degree (Mistresses of Shoplifting), while butler Basil (Monty Landis), footman Scudder (Harvey Jason), and chauffeur Digby (Larry Anthony) all incriminate themselves the instant that Batman shows up, with a token appearance from Batgirl, 3 to 4 kicks before she disappears. There's no mystery involved in figuring out the culprits, as they give themselves away with their pipe-induced fog, Batman's deductions finished barely two minutes after his arrival!

The start of a clunky three-parter set in London (aka Londinium).

Clunky? Why? Frankly, it is a bit all over the place! Set in London but obviously filmed at Fox/Warner. In my opinion atleast, the old school British villains are just not funny or interesting. However, the army of hot young girls who seem to like Robin are cool.

Also, the always used titled camera looks a little off this week. The room looks so tilted I feel like we are on a set for The Poseidon Adventure (1972).

As noted in my past reviews, I like every episode of 1966 Batman, I like this one too, but if they wanted to do a three-parter set in "London" why not go all out and do things a bit better than this? After a lesser warm up things pick up in part two.
