Short summary

In the cold, wintery fields of New England, a lonely old house wakes up every thirty years - and demands a sacrifice.
After their teenage son is killed in a car crash, Paul (Andrew Sensenig) and Anne (Barbara Crampton) move to the quiet New York countryside to try to start a new life for themselves. But the grieving couple unknowingly becomes the prey of a family of vengeful spirits that reside in their new home, and before long they discover that the seemingly peaceful town they've moved into is hiding a terrifyingly dark secret. Now they must find a way to overcome their sorrow and fight back against both the living and dead as the malicious ghosts threaten to pull their souls - and the soul of their lost son - into hell with them.

Trailers "Мы всё ещё здесь (2015)"

During his speech about the Dagmar family, Dave (Monte Markham) notes that the home's first owner sold corpses to the "University over in Essex County" - a reference to author H.P. Lovecraft's fictional Miskatonic University, which was located there.

Numerous characters in this film are named after characters or people associated with the Lucio Fulci film The House by the Cemetery (1981), which this film was inspired by.

The burn make-up on the Dagmar family ghosts took about two hours to apply and one hour to remove.

Larry Fessenden did his own stunts for the séance sequence.

One telltale sign the film was shot in a town close to the U.S.-Canadian border: the Molson Canadian beer light shades in Buffalo Bill's bar.

The role of Jacob Lewis was specifically written for Larry Fessenden to play.

The 1970's era clothes were purchased at thrift stores.

Paul Burress, who plays Billy Dee, is actually the pastor of a local church in the town where this movie was shot on location. Moreover, his daughter Zorah Burress plays the ghost girl Fiona Dagmar.

Throughout the film the characters frequently drink "B&J" Whiskey. This can be seen as an homage to "J&B Scotch"- a real life brand of alcohol that was often seen in Italian horror and exploitation films during the 1970s and early 1980s. Even the labels look very similar.

The role of Anne was specifically written for Barbara Crampton to play.

Art director Sean Hughes can be seen in photos as the Sacchetti's deceased son Bobby. Moreover, Hughes was chosen to be Bobby in said photos because of his shaggy haircut.

In Spain was only released in Barcelona (Phenomena) for 1 day in subtitled version. The film was watched by 45 viewers.

The vintage cars were lent to the filmmakers by locals in Shortsville, New York.

The smoke in the bar Buffalo Bill's was added digitally in post-production.

During the credits, around 1:20:00, there is a bonus scene.

Two of the film's central antagonists are veterans of Star Trek television series - Susan Gibney played Doctor Leah Brahms on The Next Generation episodes "Booby Trap" and "Galaxy's Child" and Commander Erika Benteen on the Deep Space Nine episodes "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost", and Monte Markham played Pascal Fullerton on the Deep Space Nine episode "Let He Who Is Without Sin...".

The weather was freezing cold throughout the shooting of this film.

This movie was shot in the middle of February.

The scene where the townie woman/bartender is stabbed in the neck by Barbara Crampton and blood sprays all over the white tarp is a nod to Dario Argento's Tenebrae, where a woman has her arm severed and blood sprays all over the white wall.

I was lucky enough to see this at a friends house last night, went into it blind, and oh boy what a nice surprise.Whilst yes, it's another haunted house movie, this brings something new to the table with a great climax to the film that really ramps it up.The performances from the whole cast are excellent, and the main four characters are likable and believable. The cinematography is excellent, and the whole film just has this authentic feel to it.I won't reveal anything of the storyline,as I think it's one of those films that's best enjoyed if you don't know too much about it,but as a seasoned horror fan,I found this one of the most refreshing films I've seen in years with some good tension and scares.I've seen some comments about 'B movie this, B movie that', but I didn't get that feeling at all, this had the feel of a 70's-80's classic horror.A little more character development of the villains would have made this even better, it could have stood another 10 minutes or more being added to the running time which would have allowed this.I'll be pre-ordering the Blu Ray as soon as possible, when there are so many horror films out there that shouldn't have even been released, this deserves my money and to be in my collection.

I thought this was going to be a creepy horror movie with a good tone and vibe going for it. I did like the atmosphere, especially the beginning few minutes. I thought it would be one of those B movies with a really creepy feel to it with some clever elements thrown in. I was wrong, I was just bored with this one. And it doesn't even have any artistic or original approach to it as well. I could see that it was trying to go in that classic horror movie direction, but it falters. Mainly because even the slow build up isn't even enticing or new. The build up just seemed like pointless drivel to lengthen the runtime. Now I am an audience member that likes some classic movies, but the pacing for this one was just bad. Overall this is a very forgettable horror flick that isn't even worth the time. I give this movie a 3, because I did like the semi-retro cinematography and look going for it. It did have potential to be really good. Maybe if they delve more in the mystery elements revolving the towns people.

Middle aged couple grieving the recent loss of their son move into a remote house, and find themselves caught between the evil in the basement and the nutters from the local town.

Swimming against the tide, I know, but I found this really poor. It opens with nice shots of the snowy landscape, then a couple driving to a destination - standard horror opening, but the dialogue has nothing. If you want to see how it's done with skill and imagination watch From the Dark (2014). We get to the destination, and it's '70s anti-colour co-ordination as the couple meets another middle aged couple, and the dialogue still has nothing.

It's about couples really - I think there are 5, if you include the basement dwellers. But the script does nothing with it. Satire of '70s swingers? No. Surely then it has a coherent, satisfying story? No. Ah, but it references '70s horror and has some cheesy gore. OK, but pfff.

Lots of sound-based attempts at jump scares. Feeble CGI. The ghosts look like they wandered off the set of The Fog.

Overall, bunch of middle aged actors get caught in juvenile misdemeanor. Community service all round.

ps. from the Ebert review: "Full disclosure: Mr. G. has a day job as a New-York-based movie publicist, and I've had friendly and rewarding exchanges with him in that context."

I freely admit to being a sucker for a good ghost story but feel no issue with prejudices when I say the movie delivers.

While there were a few problematic aspects, such as the night when the proclamation was made that there was a darkness all around inside the house which cut to a scene of everyone being sound asleep. I suppose it was the consistent use of scotch that helped with this!

That aside there is plenty of atmospheric creepiness with an easy mystery of ghosts that overlie some sort of ill defined ancient evil that had been uncovered. Nice layered evil that had no problem showing us the first layer of quite well done (yes there is a pun there) ghosts. It was, however, the deeper layer of undefined evil that I found, in the end, to be the most fun.

It was this later part that I view as quite Lovecraftian. The unseen unnamed "darkness" that is the real driving force of a quite haunted house. It is hinted at but never shown and in the end remains apart from the rest of the story that is told. Hats off for this added layer. The easily solved mystery with the impossible mystery added in was delightfully refreshing.

I would also add that a careful eye will catch a reference to the "Miskatonic River" in one of the newspapers shown during the initial end credits.

    Sweet!

The plot is solid enough. The movie is entertaining enough also meaning that if you want something new to watch in the horror genre- this movie is just entertaining enough, The lore could have been improved upon, and with some more back story, perhaps even some flashbacks with some creative storytelling and this film could have been a gem.

The movie at just 84 minutes doesn't provide enough time to the viewer to understand what this evil is that has descended on this family. We are told a few bits a pieces about he first owner who ran a funeral parlour out of this home. Something about the owner Dagmar hiding or selling the bodies and that the house was built on some ancient evil. Other than all that we are left to guess at what the heck the rest of the back story is and what it has to do with the old boiler downstairs.

If only they took another 15 minutes of screen time to flesh out the sordid past and we could have left this movie more satisfied with a true understanding of the houses evil past, where and why and how.

What we are left with is a gore fest with jump scares that are really nothing new. It's just a good old fashioned horror with a 2 star rating.

I am admittedly not a big fan of Lucio Fulci AKA The Godfather of Gore. He made some good films(Zombi 2 and City of the living Dead) but I am not a fan of his House by the Cemetery. I still liked his way of developing atmosphere although he torpedoed it himself by putting gratuitous gore and illogical sequences though it was part of his charm. So, when I heard of We Are Still Here and how it's a tribute to Fulci's films, I was intrigued if not too hopeful. Fortunately, it turned out to be a wonderful surprise.

The best part about this movie apart from the creepy atmosphere and the beautiful ice-covered New England scenery is the very good performances by nearly everyone in the cast, especially Barbara Crampton, Andrew Sensenig and the extremely creepy Monte Markham. Larry Fessenden is on hand to provide a bit of ham which he does with glee. The film much like Fulci's post-Zombi 2 films, ultimately explodes in a gore-drenched frenzy though this one still keeps sight of it's central characters. It is also surprisingly well-paced and doesn't sag in the middle like others of it's genre.

It's true that the story isn't original but the acting, direction and effects are so strong that they make up for it. I will even be audacious enough to say that this might be a better horror film than It Follows which despite stronger scares, stagnated in the middle. The director, Geoghegan seems very promising and I will eagerly await his next feature.

    Altamente Raccomandato!

Man... This is most definitely NOT the film that I read all the good reviews about. YES, it has this old-school vibe SORT OF LIKE Ti West's 'HOUSE OF THE DEVIL', Yes, it has the inestimable Larry Fessenden, the once Great guy who ran Glass Eye Pix Horror films. Yes, I very much liked the overall idea and old fashioned story about the Haunted House and the Evil Town and why they were the way they were. BUT... I'm sorry... when the acting, writing, and directing are this BAD, it totally, completely, and irrecoverably ruins no matter WHAT great premise it has. A shame, really...

Listen, I think many of the low budget Horror films are great. I KNOW that sometimes they may have some really rough edges. Sure, fine... But, quite honestly, the acting in this by ALL concerned, and the trite, plastic lines that they were forced to say, seriously... that is completely inexcusable as far as I am concerned. And Ol' Larry should certainly the hell know better by now... I truly cannot stress this enough. Just about every line was honestly cringe-worthy. Almost NOTHING was believable about these people or ONE bloody word that they were saying. About the ONLY guy who had ANY believability at all was MAYBE Monte Markham, a LITTLE bit... Even the Glass Eye Pix film 'AUTOMATONS' which cost all of about $6,000 was better than this.

And, PLEASE, don't get me started with the unrealistic and jarring sound design. I kind of have a 'thing' about that anyway which I have mentioned a few times before. It's really a shame too, because IF the movie had just had a better director, someone who actually had a frigg'n CLUE as to how bloody AWFUL this 'dialog' was and how the people were saying it, he could have EASILY fixed it along the way and then we could probably have enjoyed a nice, old fashioned Creepy Town/Ghost Story Horror film, the way that it COULD have been.

Normally, I don't go out of my way to write bad reviews of films that I don't like. However, once in a while I do when I feel that there are GOOD reasons why it should have been better, or people are involved who should bloody KNOW better, or if the story itself is quite good and it was specifically ruined in ways that could have been avoided. Just my lowly and wretched opinion... However, in all fairness, there do seem to be people here who genuinely liked the film. Perhaps they are not as sensitive as I am about the quality of the acting or their sense of involvement or suspension of disbelief isn't totally blown away by idiotic dialog, I don't know... Like I mentioned, the IDEA and the overall story is great! But, even the very best ideas done poorly do not a good movie make, I'm afraid.

I would say that if you like a good, creepy Haunted House story and you don't really care about the characters, the dialog, or any emotional investment in the people at all, and you just want to see some sort of Bad@ss Ghosts kick some @ss, well, then you might like it. But quite honestly, I personally was in so much Psychic pain trying to wade through this Gawd-Awful acting and writing, that there just wasn't anything left for me either to believe in or care about at all.

And, as a VERY sad side note... What the living HELL happened to Susan Gibney for Goodness sake and by all that is Holy...???!!! MY GOD she looked BAD! DAMN, I honestly admit that I totally and hopelessly fell in love with her in the 2 STAR TREK: TNG episodes where she played Dr. Leah Brahms... Seriously, I am crying right now at how absolutely awful she looked. I TRULY felt with all my heart that she was a total GODDESS! (and I honestly don't feel that way very often) When I first saw here behind the bar, I thought, 'Is that who I think it is...? No way! it can't POSSIBLY be her...' GEEZ...! I am SERIOUSLY depressed now...

    http://lathe-of-heaven.com/LeahBrahms.jpg

    http://lathe-of-heaven.com/LeahBrahms002.jpg

Anyway, sorry about all the crying, but I REALLY was in love with that lovely woman! I'm also very surprised that any film that Larry Fessenden has anything to do with could POSSIBLY have been done so badly, but there it is...

Again, just to tie together what I'm trying to say here... Basically an excellent idea and premise, but directed, written, and especially acted so damn poorly that it took away any potential that the film may have had...

This movie sucks big time. It's awful in all it's extension. The actors are horrible...all of them. It seemed that they never acted before, but Larry Fessenden beats them all...in the worst possible way. Gosh! deplorable act ...and the possession part?! I couldn't believe my eyes...so bad! so bad! Althoug horror films not always have strong story lines, this is incredibly bad...it's all wrong. Doesn't make any sense. And the ghosts (were they really?)they seemed like a group of lost boys...almost felt sorry for them. And what about Monte Markham character? why did he shoot the bartender? W.T.F.? And the dialogues? Can't recall a movie with so poor lines to say. And the couple that later arrived at the house? they seemed so awkward, so unattached. Well, I can't understand why was this movie made! I can't stop shouting: so bad! so bad!

"We Are Still Here" is the latest iteration of people unwittingly stumbling upon an ancient haunted house, and it succeeds more than it fails, thanks largely to the competent work of first-time director Ted Geoghegan. The Director does a great job in keeping the tension high, teasing his ghastly ghosts with escalating bouts of gore infested violence to make a film that will satisfy both haunted house and gore horror fans.

That's not saying that "We Are Still Here" is up there with some of the best haunted house movies like "The Exorcist", "The Shining", "Poltergeist", or "The Conjuring", but it does offer enough decent scares and some moments of high tension to push it past pastiche. The film mixes stylish, subtle filmmaking with sudden gore effects to deliver a twisted take on the stale and anemic haunted house formula. And though it doesn't match up to the aforementioned classics, "We Are Still Here" stands on its own as a memorable and utterly creepy genre offering that deserves to be seen by horror fans that appreciate something out of the ordinary.

    Greetings from Lithuania.

"We Are Still Here" (2015) is a pretty effective horror film. It has some great atmosphere, good chills, scary sounds and images and very solid acting. The problems with this movie begins at the end - they somehow didn't live up to the great hype they achieved in the first part of this movie, and ending is just blood bath. Nevertheless, almost everything works were so good that i can safely recommend this movie to all horror lovers.

Overall, "We Are Still Here" isn't original, but it's effective genre picture. It has great chilling "hounted house" setting, intriguing cinematography, good acting, nice pacing (although movie is kinda short), and some genuinely good scares. All in all i can recommend to see this horror flick. The ending is a bit off, nevertheless the whole ride is pretty good.

The first fifteen or twenty minutes of this movie were gold. It was horror done right. Atmospheric, paying upon the unknown, subtle scares. The dialogue was pretty bad, but I was more than engaged by the building horror.

then, suddenly, the movie completely loses its restraint and becomes a goofy gore fest with monsters that just might be action heroes.

I don't want to say anything else because I don't want to add spoilers. I'll just say that I love horror movies. It is my favorite genre. There are different levels of horror. There is true, psychological mind screws that get under the skin and stay there for days (my favorite kind). On the opposite end of the spectrum are these CGI, "thrill" driven, blood-and-gore-a-minute for people with no attention spans (my lease favorite kind). The latter has its place. No doubt. My only problem with this film is that it pretends, and many of the reviewers on here seem to be pretending, that it's the former.

I honestly feel like the victim of false advertising and I have a hard time believing the almost universal praise this movie received. I know my tastes lean a bit more towards the artsy and stylish (and old), but I cannot be THIS out of touch. For god's sake, I just watched Age of Ultron last night and enjoyed a lot of things about it.

This film is pretty straight forward. A family moves into a house and there's something ominous about it; sounds, movement, a cellar where something apparently has gone down some time ago.

It started off well. American country roads. Silence. Winter, snow. Then, silence and few movements.

Then, the main two characters, a couple who are seemingly deeply affected, start talking. Neither of the actors do a good job, I'm sad to say. The script is forced and the dialogue feels contrived. The plot moves along at a bore's pace, and the more everything goes on, I felt a complete blanket of amateurism crudely laid over the entire production.

I could go on with how the twists and turns in this film don't feel relevant, or how I never felt any kind of care for anything in this production, but that would just be giving this machine more than it deserves. Stay away.

I had high hopes for this one, especially after seeing where it was heading. Don't ask my why, cause there have been so many such productions, and still, somehow, I hoped for the best.

OK, let us begin: the movie is not bad, it has some good jump scares, OK effects, decent plot tho ever used, good actors and a cold chill surrounding. So, why does it fail? I'll tell you: the plot brings nothing new, the ending is as predictable as it gets and it acts exactly like so many before it. OK, maybe the production is better, maybe the budget was bigger and used for the best, still, the story behind it all, has nothing new to offer, just that tired old formula.

Once you see it, you'll understand. At points it even makes little sense. But more deaths had to occur therefore logic had to make a run for it. Overall, a 5, maybe even a solid 5 but nothing more.

    Cheers!

This movie grows on you.. At first I was wondering what the director was doing and really wondered if I was going to be able to sit through it. It seemed like a B movie to me. It still is a B movie, but it's really cool. I am not a B movie fan. I take my movies too seriously. But this one pulled it off and managed to really creep me out. I loved the acting. It's subtle, but intentional. See with movies, if an actor is doing too realistic a job, it's going to seem off. This movie appears like the actors are off, yet I had the distinct feeling it was intentional. The caliber of the actors is too good and you see that in moments.. Not through out the whole film.. It's almost seems as if the kinda dullness of the actors at first is only to add to the crescendo at it's peak. This is a good movie. I want to call it great but I don't want people to get the wrong idea.. I actually loved this movie and have no idea why. It was just really cool man.. Like in a so hip it looks like sh** kinda way. Some people though will not understand this. Also it mixes a ton of genres , I think it's more a slasher flick than anything , although there are paranormal, haunted house and horror aspects to it. I think my only complaint is that this could have been one of the greatest horror movies to date with a bigger budget and work on the script, more character and theme developments , better special effects, possibly different effects - the zombie demon - it could have been a blockbuster if they didn't make it so camp. But it still is a great movie and I love it just the way it is. I will be surprised if it doesn't become a classic

Overall the film disappointed me, but its one of those indie horror films that does certain things so well it kinda sticks with you. I enjoyed it but didn't blow me away like I wanted it to. I liken it that movie

"I Am a Ghost (2012)" -If you liked this go watch that.

On the pro side of things they did an amazing job emulating the atmosphere of a 70's era horror film. I really could not seem to pick out any modern day features. On the whole that seems hard to do, but the benefit is you don't have to get wrapped up in ex machina like cellphones not working for no particular reason etc. When the house creaks and utilities fail it all fits together nicely. Lots of creepiness and edginess. The OST was great.

On the Cons side of things the acting was just wooden over the top and cringe worthy. The problem is Im certain this was on purpose. A couple of actors I recall are experienced and I wasn't buying their delivery. It was very purposely scripted to be like 70s horror. It doesn't work and you end up just trudging your way through exasperatingly bad dialog to keep enjoying the rest of it. I liked that they kept the plot inferred through conversation but suddenly for no good reason they monologue a big chunk of the story midway through. It was dumb and unnecessary. Ruined the suspense for me. Lastly the "monsters" were shown too much and the gore lightened the tension so much all the creepiness was sucked out of it in the last act.

Its a solid b+ for concept and design. It sits at a 5.8 and that sounds about right to me. If they'd worked the script a little better and or tighten up the special effects this could have been a solid 7.

We Are Still Here seems to be getting a pass from critics, which surprises me. Maybe it's because it doesn't involve zombies or found footage, and that alone makes it an intriguing rarity as far as horror films in 2015 go. But aside from that, We Are Still Here is a completely pedestrian haunted house flick not worth your time.

Family moves into new house. Basement is dark and scary. Things go bump in the night. Townspeople are weird and creepy. A psychic is brought in. A seance is attempted. Some people die violently. Sound familiar? That's because We Are Still Here is exactly the same haunted house movie you've seen a million times. In fact, it's so hackneyed that at first I thought it was going to be some kind of subversive, self-aware comment on horror films, a la Cabin in the Woods (2012), or at least a beautifully-executed homage to the genre like House of the Devil (2009).

No such luck. There's absolutely nothing new or interesting about We Are Still Here. It appears to be set in the 1970's, which is odd because this fact is just barely discernible from some of the cars and a few of the wardrobe choices, and because this particular historical setting adds nothing whatsoever to the effectiveness of the story. The plot, acting, dialog, effects, and cinematography are all completely forgettable, and about the best thing I can say about it is that there are a few tepid scares here and there.

Don't waste your time with this one, at least not until you've seen some of the truly great horror that's been coming out recently, like The Babadook (2014) and It Follows (2014).

I love horror that takes place around houses, conjures presence and unleashes energy. It's the gust of motion I'm after, the familiar geography thrown asunder by metaphysical winds that lift walls. Blood can be there or not, for me it's inhabiting something that is changed in the course, shown to be no thing, illusory, a prank of our investment in the idea of solid reality.

And this is horror that moves fast, dwells and conjures with some purity. Oh the parts are all familiar; old house with a presence in the basement, a bereaved couple moving in, small New England town harboring a secret. Some have likened it to a b-movie of old as if that were a bad thing, in fact that's part of the whole appeal. Not that it pays homage to movies of old as if they should be enshrined in our estimation but that it taps into a kind of energy we've forgotten.

You wouldn't be amiss of thinking of it with Fulci in mind, in those brief years when he could cut portals through his own murk. It's that type of lumbering energy that assuredly emanates from below, stands outside doors and makes floors creak before washing with blood. It knowingly mines that legacy but short of forcing it to be a certain type of film.

It's always so hard to know whether to trust a review in the Horror genre on IMDb. There are a few people on here that gave pretty specific reasons why this movie was good. I have to say, after watching it, I disagree whole-heartedly. This was a really boring movie. My girlfriend and I laid in bed after just laughing about how little it scared us and how much it bored us. My girlfriend is usually super sensitive to laying there in the dark (my house is pretty old and can be pretty creepy at night even without a horror movie) and she had no issues after this movie. You don't expect the best acting with movies like this but god....the males in it were pretty bad. You get your typical acting from Lisa Marie. I give her a pass just b/c I love Tim Burton so much. I'm biased with her. But yeah, the acting was all this movie had since the story, plot and scares were not good. A scary movie needs to either be jump out of your seat scary or psychologically scary. This really wasn't either. I'm giving it 3 stars b/c someone put the effort into making a movie, and I respect that. But it was pretty awful and boring.

I was looking forward to this because of the good reviews on here, but I was sorely disappointed. Have no clue what movie these people watched, but I don't think it was this one! Don't get tricked into wasting your time and your 1.50. I wouldn't watch it if it were free. Honestly one of THE worst movies I have ever seen. I love horror movies like, The Conjuring, The Shining, Poltergeist, ( original one). This movie does not even come close. " We Are Still Here"....Well I wish you weren't. Disappointed once again and just about ready to give up hope that I will be able to find any good horror films in the near future. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR YOUR MONEY!! It's not worth it!

Holy hell.... This film was a piece of garbage. This director should never be allowed to direct again. This film isn't a horror film. It's a damn tragedy. It's a tragedy that it was allowed to be made.

There was no story, ridiculous dialogue and acting. I concur wholeheartedly with a few reviewers above.

I couldn't finish it because it was just too bad of a film. Terribad..... Terribad Terribad Terribad

I recommend this film to just about no one. Okay, okay.....maybe people with little exposure to great horror, or people with a complete lack of imagination or appreciation for quality work. This may work for you.

The best part about this movie apart from the creepy atmosphere and the beautiful ice-covered New England scenery is it's unpredictably n sudden change of pace. Really awesome cinematography by Karim Hussain (Hobo with a shotgun, Antiviral, ABCs of death). There's also a lot of very over the top but well executed supernatural violence/gore. Some awesome visual effects. It has drama, atmosphere and suspense, keeping a serious tone and setting.

One thing that sets this film apart from many others is that the main characters are middle-aged and that it suddenly changed from a slow atmospheric movie into over the top fantastic gory splatter movie. The special effects are pretty well thought out and executed. There are elements that pull from classic horrors in a very good n entertaining way. Themes and motifs from popular horror films such as The Shining, The Amityville Horror, The Fog n House by the cemetery r visible. It can be called a remake of House by the cemetery.

Great job from a first time film maker Ted Geoghegan.

So many horror veterans in one film. Barbara Crampton (From beyond, Re- animator, lords of salem, tales of halloween, you'r next). Lisa Marie (Sleepy hollow, tales of halloween, Lords of salem, silent night). Andrew Sensenig (don't look in the basement 2, kill or be killed, Dylan dog, nine dead). Larry Fessenden ( session 9, late phases, we r what we r, jug face, u r next, stake land, mulberry street, session 9). Ted Geoghegan pays loving tribute to Lucio Fulci. Was really getting annoyed n tired with the recent pg-13 ghost movies.

This movie was relatively unentertaining. It lacked a proper climatic buildup but rather depressed you with thirty minutes of dreary winter days in the countryside before finally allowing the viewer a glimpse of foreboding shadows and random falling picture frames. Perhaps the most irritating aspect to this movie was how quickly certain characters were picked off without warning, especially after it was suggested they would have larger roles. Although in what, I have no clue. There was very nearly no explanation as to who, what, or why things were happening. I suppose it was all bad, though. Throw in a few zombie-ghost, demon clichés and it was well worth finishing. All in all, I am a little glad I rented it.

For those who grew up with horror made in the seventies this will be a throwback to that era. Those who are into the new horror genre will find it rather boring. Let me explain it a little bit.

There isn't that much action going on and before it becomes awry you have almost wait for an hour. Before that you will have your jump scenes and the atmosphere that will take you into the horror.

I see that some reviews are talking about unknown thespians but what the hell, Barbara Crampton of the Re-animator franchise fame and Monte Markham, well known in the eighties and seventies.

If you can sit through the first hour you will be surprised to see a lot of bloody and even gory shots. Really something to check out if you are a geek of Italian gory flicks (Fulci style) but if you like the flicks made nowadays avoid it at all costs.

Preparing for a get together, a grieving couple move into a new house in a mysterious town where they gradually come to believe the strange noises around them thought to be their son are a far darker and malevolent force using them for an appeasement sacrifice.

This here was quite the enjoyable if slightly flawed effort. Though it does feature prominently as a flaw, the slow-build nature of the storyline here is one of the more impressive parts here with the way that there's this unraveling mystery that gets built up throughout the film. The whole mysterious-strangers-in-town vibe that carries throughout the first half is really well-done, the inclusion of their psychic friends is a big positive as they're able to uncover so many other aspects of their story with the ability to spell out what's happening and the way the different cut-aways to the townspeople which manages to all combine together into a great storyline that's given plenty of time to work itself out by taking as long as it does. That ends up revealing quite an impressive and old-school style effort with the need for sacrificial rituals and predetermined curses coming into play as well as the concept of people aligning themselves with the dark force already present at the location which is all so well handled how it ties into the different archetypes featured in past efforts. Likewise, this one also offers up plenty of enjoyable elements from the action of how this one goes about giving this storyline some frenetic action to help sell these factors, generating plenty of fun here with some great action in the beginning with the attack while down in the basement which is petty chilling and creepy as the ghost appears and begins chasing them around the room and out into their car which is quite a fun scene. Still, the majority of the fun here comes from the final half which is just a purely enjoyable and over-the-top exercise in enjoyment with the film going all-out for delivering brutal kills that are incredibly bloody, plenty of action-packed chases with them going around the house escaping from the mob after them and the different resolutions it brings up, all aided nicely by the absolutely chilling and creepy-looking ghosts here that give this one so much to like. Still, there's a few minor flaws here which mostly stems from the film's one biggest factor in the dull, lagging pace. The fact that we get as slow a burn as it is here definitely takes a toll on this one in the beginning where once we get past their grief and trauma of the accident not a whole lot actually happens here. It's not just that there's something happening all the time, but it's rarely giving any kind of encounter here until nearly halfway through which is quite a long time of nothing occurring. The other issue here is the absolutely inane concept of once again featuring a film where characters are clearly aligned with a truly malignant force for no reason, as the relationship isn't given anything worthwhile to expand upon here and the whole thing is confusing and muddied. Otherwise, thought, there's not a whole lot wrong here.

I think the "throwback" quality of the film was done well. The opening scene with the Mercedes was reminiscent of the Night of the Living Dead. The story moved at a nice pace without unfolding too quickly. The crazy hippie friends reminded me of the Amityville Horror from the 60s with Helen Shaver. So many things went right with the film and they pulled it off while giving up some hardcore gore. I think some of the acting (and dodging) the sticky bits wasn't so much an act. I don't think there was a wall left unscathed. Solid film. Entertaining and curious. Wouldn't make me keep the night light on, but I feel they were going for another sense with this piece. Dark Sky is making some clever choices and I see the work paying off from film to film. It is always great to see a group do well when they apparently care about the horror genre.
