Short summary

Discovering Steve's last message, Myka and Pete fly to Hong Kong where they find Walter Sykes forcing H.G. Wells to solve an ancient and deadly puzzle linked to a chess set inside the long-disused Ancient Sanctum of the Regents. This "lock," devised by Caturanga (H.G.'s Warehouse mentor), blocks access to a gateway that Walter plans to use to regain Collodi's Bracelet and reach his final objective. Meanwhile, Marcus Diamond attacks Leena to use artifacts in aid of Walter's scheme, but not if Claudia and Mrs. Frederic can prevent it.

Artie identifies the cannon as belonging to a pirate, Black Barty. Bartholomew Roberts, known as Black Bart after his death, was the most successful pirate of his time. Between 1719 and 1722 he took more ships, if not more booty, than any other pirate.

When Claudia retrieves Steve's last message from his lighter and hears him say "Keep the faith," tears are digitally added to her eyes.

The code on Steve Jinks screen reads: "Steven Jinks (W13 Agent NXN43772632-30032). Murdered by Walter Sykes."

It would take weeks maybe months for Pete and Myka to get authorisation to carry their firearms in China. So unless they bought them illegally or had contacted the Chinese government three weeks before boarding their flight they couldn't have live firing guns

The chess lock starts at a point where there are less than half of the pieces still on the board. This is not the opening of a game. Helena says, "With Tyler I chose the King's Gambit". That is an opening strategy where white advances the king's pawn and then the king's bishop's pawn as the first two moves of the game.

I love this show! So, yes, I realize it is not the pinnacle of sci-fi, but it is fun, it is lighthearted, it has a great combination of historic fact with creative inventiveness and it makes you laugh. The plots are very Agatha Christie in 40minute bursts, they are not as predictive as the simplicity of the show would make you think. One thing that is very well done in this show is the character development, you can empathize with them and you want to see them do well, get together, or get a grip: you think of the characters as friends. It is not often that you feel so much like a show is your family, but the latest episode made me feel just like that. Saturday morning or prime time both work for me with this show, I just enjoy watching it.

So... Pete's willing to kill HG in the previous episode to keep Sykes from completing his plan, but NOT for some reason Sykes himself? OK, sure, he has control of HG via Cecil B DeMille's riding crop but he himself has no weapon, is sitting down, and TWO trained Secret Service agents have guns on him? What's the hold up here? Shoot him. And that's WH13 in a nutshell: a teenage show masquerading as a scifi classic. I like this show, don't get me wrong, but the weak attempts at building tension have the complete opposite effect. It's taken to a greater height as the show plays out too. Once they cross over it's so painfully obvious Jane or Artie could take him, and yet they don't. It's more of a Saturday morning show than a prime time one.
