» » Los Simpson Clown in the Dumps (1989– )

Short summary

Upset by stinging remarks at a comedy roast Krusty the clown turns for comfort to his father who promptly dies on him but there is little sympathy for him in the cut and thrust world of show biz and, after a dream in which he meets his father in Jewish heaven, he decides to retire and open an animal sanctuary. Fortunately the ever loyal Bart has a way of showing him that his father respected him and loved his jokes whilst Lisa's over-concern for Homer's safety pays off.

At the roast, Jeffrey Ross jokes that Krusty "is to comedy what Martin Luther King is to comedy." He made the same joke in 1998 at the New York Friar's Club roast of Drew Carey, comparing Carey to Mariah Carey.

Krusty's father Rabbi Krustofski dies in this episode therefore this episode is his final appearance.

Ninth time Sideshow Bob is seen out of prison as he is accompanied by his parole officer at Rabbi Krustofski's funeral and another instance where he is not hostile towards Krusty.

This is an episode of the television show "The Simpsons". There will be spoilers ahead:

The couch gag in this episode was animated by Don Hertzfeldt, whose animation style is about as diametrically opposed from the show as is possible. I like Hertzfeldt's shorts and if this gets him a wider audience, this is a good thing. This is the oddest couch gag I can recall, but it's a typical Hertzfeldt piece.

Krusty has retired (again) after a celebrity roast bothers him more than it should. Part of the problem is that his last memory of his father, the rabbi, is of his father saying "Meh" when asked if he considers his son funny. Since I like rabbi Krustofsky, the "death" is sad to me.

The episode has a number of guest voices, with Sideshow Bob showing up, as well as having Sarah Silverman as herself at Krusty's roast and David Hyde Pierce showing up also.

The other prominent story line doesn't really work for me, with Lisa trying to protect Homer from accidents because she's afraid of losing her admittedly accident-prone dad. There are a few laughs, but it doesn't really go anywhere.

The Krusty plot line is an 8, the homer part is a 5 and the show gets a 6.5.

Clown in the Dumps is a great Simpsons episode with a well written storyline and loads of very funny scenes. It certainly wasn't the exciting and noteworthy episode fans were expecting it to be,as we were waiting for the death of a major Simpsons character, but it isn't anyone who is too important or has even appeared on the show that much, but it did make for a good storyline.I liked seeing another Krusty episode,he is without a doubt one of my favourite Simpsons characters and I felt like it had been a while since we had an episode revolving around him.My favourite part of the episode was its parody of the Comedy Central Roasts, particularly Jeff Ross's cameo. Its not a particularly noteworthy episode that people myth have been expecting, but Clown in the Dumps is still an enjoyable episode and a great opening for the 26th season.

Krusty's confidence enters a new low as he considers retirement, meanwhile,a resident of Springfield has passed.
