I kept having to double-check whether the IMDb rating I was seeing was for the right movie.

This movie is good. It doesn't even look low-budget, if you ask me. The production values, the sets, the props and effects, and even the acting are all pretty well up there in quality and are actually above-par for an indie flick. In fact, the only clue I can see for this even being an independent film is the lack of celebrity actors. Plop a couple famous faces in here and I think anyone would be hard-pressed to tell the difference from a Hollywood production.

The only explanation I can see for the poor ratings is that people were expecting a sci-fi flick and are judging the movie's compliance with that expectation. I've seen this phenomenon before, and it's sad, because good movies end up without the recognition they deserve.

This is actually a good movie, in nearly every way. It's basically a war movie with a touch of sci-fi, and in that regard it's actually rather exceptional. It's well-written and well-acted, with convincing combat, and an interesting and original story. It's my hope that people disregard the low ratings and give movies like this a shot anyway.

I'm truly grateful my instincts served me. The trailers were not great and the IMDb ratings for this film were awful... but I watched it anyway. IT WAS GREAT. No criticisms at all. I guess if you think 'hollywood nonsense' all flash no story makes a great movie, then this isn't for you.

If you liked movies like District 9, then this will be right up your alley.

Great characters, great story, great cinematography, great effects and great action!

I hardly EVER write reviews but just HAD to to try to make up for the poor reviews by idiots who have no idea...

The title Outpost 37 is much better than the alternative Alien Outpost, the latter seeming to suggest some crappy Uwe Boll type film.

In fact I was very pleasantly surprised by the premise, the acting, and the cinematography. Although very aware that this was a low budget film with a necessary limit on special effects, I was engrossed by the story all the way to an end - which, albeit a little obvious some way before, was a satisfactory one. It left some questions and highlighted a couple of plot holes, but it was still way better than its budget would suggest.

What effects there were were effective, the cinematography and the editing sharp and snappy, and the actors surprisingly above par and very comfortable in their roles, making the film believable all the way through.

All in all a good couple of hours well spent.

This movie deserves so much more attention and praise than it have gotten. You need to give this movie a chance, the acting is good. The story although slow to begin with is very engaging and well written. I have heard people say that the special effects are cheep, but honestly i have no idea where they get it from, first of all there aren't that many and the ones that are there looks perfectly fine.

Regarding the story, its feels like what a sequel to "Battle Los Angeles"could have been. So if you liked that movie, i guarantee you will like this one, even if you like "war/conflict" movies you will like it, if you like sci-fi you will like it.

I personally really enjoy these movies that come in from the side lines, having not been over hyped or expected for 6 months, and then out of no where it will provide you with an hour and 45 minutes of very well made entertainment.

Perhaps I'm biased because I work in the film industry, but it makes me mad when crappy reviews come out about films with concepts and ambitions that obviously outweigh their budgets. Everyone wants more money to make their films, but the question regarding talent is what do people with the resources afforded to them.

This film gets under the skin, parallelling contemporary American foreign policy whilst giving a balls-out ride into a post-victorious alien invasion scenario.

This is what I like about ALIEN OUTPOST. It's smart. It delivers a sic fi action film on a fraction of the budget of a Hollywood Studio flick, but because of its low budget it can afford to take time to build the characters and take risks that the Studios wouldn't allow.

This was an OK movie to me and I was surprised that it got such low overall score. The premise was unique and grounded (relatively speaking) in the reality of what might occur if a failed alien attack took place.

The acting was OK. There were a few two dimensional characters, but I felt the relationship between the soldiers was on point as well as some of the male bonding hazing.

When one of the soldiers died you really felt the emotion of the team.

The special effects for the budget were pretty good and the ending was solid as was the build up.

I would definitely watch a sequel to the movie.

While a little slow at times, this SciFi delivers a story that unfolds like a documentary, reminds me of district 9 without being a copy of it. Its refreshing to see a SciFi with a story, without a large amount of special effects, about an Earth we can relate to without too many futuristic changes. For a low budget film I think it turned out well.

I make it a habit if the film looks interesting then I do not pay attention to reviews unless there are many with less than 3 stars. Most people are very critical in ratings and many 5 star films I have liked and few big budget I thought were waste of time and money.

This was worth the time and money.

I'm on the fence of 7 or 8 stars so I gave it an 8 because I really think I will see it again.

I hope to see a sequel

This was a really well made film. As a disabled veteran I enjoyed the insight into military camaraderie. Well worth my time. Shooting the goats of the locals was a jab at soldiers that I didn't think was accurate or beneficial to the film. Hence the 8 instead of 9 for the film. The alien technologies mixed in with identifiable everyday "Earth" elements was well done. It did feel like it was encroaching on Earth and did not belong. The staging and cinematography was top notch. I really hope they do a sequel. I think you will see more from this director and his team. Being a scifi buff I again liked the blending of reality with fantasy. I could envision something like this happening.

Once you get through the low budget look and the long "what the heck is going on here?" the movie sucks you in and by the time the long final scene comes, you are totally immersed in the story and come to care for the characters. with a bigger budget, this story could turn into a great movie with possibly a sequel. the suspense is working and you never know who is going to bite it next and who will survive, if any. I would definitely would like to see more of the back story, or what comes next (don't forget to wait for the extra scene at the end of credits). Aliens are a bit woody but not too bad considering the budget they had to work with. at first I was sure this is going to be like Cloverfield or Godzilla where you barely get to glimpse at pieces of the monsters if at all, but here the aliens are noticeable and have, if not significant, than a respectable showing.

    --Disclaimer--

Might contain little spoilers, non plot.

    --------------

So, I'm not about to write a long detailed review but I'll try to add a bit.

I watched this movie without watching pictures, the plot or the trailer. Only some reviews here. First instance, I wasn't even about to get the movie, but the reviews here changed that opinion.

The movie has a bad rating for whatever reason, but the movie is not what the rating says.

It's aliens, SCI-FI, and I'm a fond of that. The aliens themselves seemed a bit odd at the beginning, but further in the movie, you'll understand and like them.

Actors are doing a great job. Playing bad-ass military's with some humor mixed in the movie.

Don't let the rating fool you! If you love military and Sci-Fi movies, watch this one, because you'll probably not regret.

Alien invasion movies are going to keep coming; no matter how god awful the recent stock of them have been ("Battle LA", "Battleship") it seems like there is still money that financiers still think should be thrown at blowing E.T out of the water. But if we're going to keep going down this road, it's clear that we could do much worse than the kinda-different "Alien Outpost" from writer-director Jabar Raisani. Raisani, a visual effects supervisor on quite a few mainstream projects (most recently "Game of Thrones"), gives us his first feature here, a combination of "Starship Troopers" and Sebastian Junger's war documentary "Restrepo." So the Earth gets invaded in 2021, a year later the alien Heavies have almost all been extinguished except for some stragglers who are being taken care of by military outposts around the world. 10 years later those outposts have been defunded and the men fighting the war have been forgotten. As if the real-life comparison doesn't hit you over the head enough already, a film crew has been assigned to document the efforts of Outpost 37, situated between Pakistan and Afghanistan. (That's all that area needs- Jihadist Aliens).

"Outpost's" approach is kinda cynical. Remember all those foreign kids Michael Bay has running around, celebrating when the Americans stop the Earth from getting destroyed? Well, that only has a "few-year" shelf life. The soldiers are at risk not just from aliens but also the locals, both of which likely to pull an ambush on the rocky and rough terrain. There are moments when things get intense, and there are moments when the guys just sit around/contribute to film crew interviews- bullshitting with each other, cleaning weapons, practical jokes, telling war stories, trying to add some sense to the mayhem. Despite every character being given a "bare-bones" personality, it's surprising how much a lot of this comes off as genuine, especially like in a scene where a soldier honors a fallen friend.

It's a shame that Raisani doesn't have as much confidence in his alien creations. We're either given brief glimpses or shots from far away. I want to say they resemble the Orcs from "Lord of the Rings" but I just couldn't tell. They also don't really do much besides attack during gun battles (machine, electric, laser, lot of different types of guns here), any other reason for having them inhabit this region makes about as much sense as the Sunni-Shiite conflict does to most Americans. We get a few decent battles and ideas but Raisani, along with co-writer Blake Clifton, mostly just gives us an under-baked war-documentary where aliens are just there for target practice.

Don't believe the ratings. Read the reviews!

This movie was featured on Netflix's home page, and even though the still from the movie looked cheesy I decided to check the IMDb rating first. The rating was 4.6, but thankfully I've made it a practice nowadays to read the featured review - I was rewarded with an entertaining watch!

This is a well made war movie! I was never bored during the movie, the storyline kept me intrigued, and I never felt like I was watching an enactment. The best part was that it did not have any known faces and that made it more of a "this-is-how-it-happened" kind of documentary-movie.

I will definitely recommend this to any war movie buff. Or to any Counter Strike fan!

And don't miss the extra footage at the end of the credits!

Only minor spoiler about some plot points that went nowhere

I enjoy the movie and for a low budget movie I thought it was surprisingly good. I think the people behind this had hope they would get a big distribution or more money coming in to fund this through it a shame they didn't.

The CGI, Aliens and makeup was surprisingly well done for what is suppose to be a low budget film and if you watch a lot of budget films you will be impressed by them. Same with the actors they were good throughout the film.

A few plot threads went unanswered as well like those special forces guys that disappeared from the scene, the lack of urgency from command like they been infiltrated. Some of this may have been due to budget and funding not coming through an the guys making the best of what they have filmed already.

Hollywood has given us a number of Alien movies in recent years that where just bad or at the most they where OK. To list some: Battle:LA, Skyline, Clover field, etc. These movies are high budget and with dreadful acting and extremely questionable cinematography.

A documentary named "Restrepo" Directed by Tim Hetherington and Sebastion junger filmed in 2010 was one of the best war documentary's ever filmed in my opinion of course. The only other Decent documentary i can think of being "Inside Combat Rescue". If you take both of these then put a post alien invasion "Battle:LA" plot to it you get "Alien Outpost".

First lets talk about the actor comparison of "Battle:LA and Alien Outpost". In "Battle:LA" we have a few very well known actors starring. All very well paid and all coming from a slew of Hollywood movies they had done in the past. Now lets take the guys from "Alien Outpost" Nobody except maybe you're smiling mothers and fathers and a token small fan base from there previous movies.... (if there are any) know who these people are.

When the Hollywood actors speak its pure script and they put the emotion that's written on paper to there million dollar vocal cords and eventually a director takes a dump and you have your flashy hyped up and eagerly awaited movie at a theater near you.

When the non-Hollywood actors go off and play out the script you get the script and what the actors think will immerse the viewer into the story. In other words actors are encouraged to add in a bit of there own dialog where the script has very little. Overall making it far more gritty.

Now go and watch and listen to how soldiers act and talk in "Restrepo". Then go and watch and listen to how actors act and talk in "Battle:LA". Finally go and watch and listen to how actors act and talk in "Alien Outpost". Notice how in "Battle:LA" they manage to speak all four pages of dialog the director wrote. while in "Alien Outpost" they only speak about half a page to a page of dialog and the rest is just swearing running around shooting and telling people which side to cover.

"Battle:LA" on the other hand rarely taking a breather rarely not running and gunning rarely not in combat. Are you seeing my point here. Still not convince that "Alien Outpost" did combat the right way and "Battle:LA" completely wrong.... OK lets look at something else then. The amount of ammo the guys in "Battle:LA" are spewing out without having to get a resupply from either a helicopter or returning to the Forward operating base. Wow i think that Marine just pulled a fourth clip out of a 2 to 3 at the most clip pouch. Literally they don't stop to get ammo until the end of the movie.

"Alien Outpost"... "Man these guys sure do have to switch to there pistols a lot after fighting for 6 to 7 minutes." The reason for that ladies and gents you don't normally run around with enough ammo to last you a month in combat unless you've got an APC filled with pre- loaded extra mag's sitting around supporting you the whole time. Now correct me if i'm wrong but I didn't see a single god damned Bradly with them in that movie. So when the fighting to a little while the guys in Outpost had to switch to there pistols until combat ended and they could go back inside to refill there magazines.

Any ways that's enough ranting for one day overall "Alien Outpost" 10/10 Semi Realistic, way better acting than one would expect, and far to underrated for what it truly deserves.

And for those of you who say the camera style is bad the CGI is horrible why would any one watch a fake documentary about a war that didn't happen? Your probably the same tasteless dick wad's that enjoyed the movie "Battle:LA" and called it oh so realistic and totally awesome dude.

As others have written I, too, was a bit hesitant about watching this movie, having read previous reviews. I have to say I really don't know what movie the nay-sayers watched. This movie was excellent! Tense, great acting, great, well paced action. It didn't have to depend on cg or big name actors. The love that the soldiers feel for one another is delivered flawlessly. I've been a fan of science fiction for most of my life. Having said that in the 40+ years that I've been watching Science Fiction I place this movie right at the top of the "Invasion" genre.

If you trust nothing else I say in this review, which I also will say is the first I've ever written, it is that you shouldn't trust the negative reviews and watch the film for yourself.

This is more of a guy flick but I found it completely engrossing. I think there are a number of reasons this film worked but most importantly it was from the perspective of the average Joe Enlistee and felt like an authentic day in the life of, and the acting was on par with any Hollywood blockbuster. It didn't focus on the aliens at all so that it would not detract from this authentic atmosphere, and yet the costumes and special effects were top notch. More than that, the film managed to bring me in as one of the team very quickly, letting me feel emotionally present with the main characters. I think the lack of "updated" helicopters, gear, etc was intentional--I mean we've seen movies for decades that imagine what earth might be like in 50 or 100 years with state of the art weapons and uniforms... and yet in reality not much changes, especially not in the military. I think it was a perfect decision to not try and focus on how the filming was done other than the brief acknowledgment of the journalists in the beginning. Very refreshing. I think this is a seriously overlooked film and I'm glad I had the chance to see it.

It's sad to see what a low score this movie's gotten considering how truly amazing it is.

It's rare to see a film that has an excellent story, amazing presentation and great acting. This isn't yet another mindless alien flick full of mindless violence, and it's definitely not one of those "found footage" schlocks. This is a masterfully presented view of what real war is like, even if it involves aliens.

The movie shows the events involving the garrison of an outpost set up in a forgotten part of the world in order to help fight off the remnants of an alien invasion of earth. It presents a believable group of soldiers dealing with the horrors of being on the front line and the tough choices they have to face every day. Honestly, without the alien aspect this movie could easily pass for a real front line war recording. It's that well done.

You're not watching endless "shaky cam" nonsense. The camera is solid yet fluid. Honestly, you will forget that you're actually supposed to be seeing everything through the eyes (or cameras) of two war videographers. If "found footage" films were done with this level of quality, they could truly become a genre worthy of respect.

This movie scores top scores in all regards and puts most Hollywood big budget movies to shame. It's a must see for everyone.

I only write reviews of movies with low rating, which actually are not that bad. Give them a chance!

This is also my first review on IMDb and I am doing it because this is one of the best low-budget sci-fi films I've seen.

At the time I am writing this, the movie has a 4.6 rating, but I think it deserves a higher one. I would give it a 6, and I think it deserves something between 5.5 - 6.

The plot is original, it is not ''yet another'' movie about this theme, and acting is OK, I think only this guy with camera does not know how to act ( he interviews soldiers ). VFX is solid, and if we consider the budget of the movie - it is great! I enjoyed watching it.

I watched this movie because I was laid up at home with an injury and was bored out of my mind. This turned out to be a decent film. The acting was good, the special effects were top notch and the locations were clearly well thought out. For a science fiction film it was quite believable. My biggest criticism would be that it was too well produced and too tightly scripted for a supposed documentary, which it was supposed to be. You need more than some hand-held cameras to pull that off. The script should have felt a little more natural throughout and the cinematography should have looked a bit more "raw". Also, I felt that after the hypnotic-like actions of the 'suicide bomber' at the slaughtered goat scene in the rock quarry the soldiers should have been able to recognize the same behavior in certain characters later in the film. But, really, aside from that, this was a pleasant diversion.

Thank you to those who reviewed the film before I. Those mostly positive reviews made me watch it and I was very happy to witness that most of the praise is justified. I don't understand why such a low overall score on IMDb.

Simple, great production, you really feel part of the action and intensity. I've seen a lot more $ spent on a much weaker plot. This plot isn't bad at all, in fact the more I think about it the more I think the director and all deserve a pat on the back for making quite a decent sci fi thriller on what I would imagine be a micro budget.

Well done and well deserving of 1.5 hours of your time.

Yes please to an equally gritty sequel.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I watched this movie fully expecting it to be what I consider a "stupid disaster movie." I have a fondness for those, from the cheesy acting to the terrible graphics. It amuses me.

However, this movie was far from that. It was well acted and the graphics were pretty great. I should also mention I generally dislike combat documentary films, but this story drew me in, and I enjoyed it a lot. By the end I found myself hoping there would be a sequel, just to see what happens next. The story was fairly believable and I enjoyed the perspective. It probably could use a bit more depth and back-story, but overall it's worth your time. I would definitely suggest that you watch it. :)

Fortunately, a lot of user reviews recognize the quality of this film now. It's very underrated (rates 4.8 while I type). It's the military documentary of grunts fighting for earth but their detailed little part in stead of a Scifi telling the story of the big picture. It keeps you entertained and moved, the documentary part gives you the feeling that you actually could follow this "live". For a Scifi, this is a quite realistic way of telling and living the story of what can happen in this type of military unit. Maybe there's no Micheal Bay type of explosions or gunfire, but to be honest it makes it even more believable. If you like realistic Scifi and a background story, you will not be disappointed! On the acting part, all of them deliver a great performance. The authenticity, emotions and expressions made watching this movie a great pass-time. Give this movie a chance people!

There will be those speaking of comparisons of modern combat and police action and this movie. There will be those speaking of the Cynicism in this move and the thought of the director... But this is not their review..... I am a movie fanatic. I love good movies. All kinds from action thru musicals to westerns. I also love documentaries. This is neither. this film is more in the range of budget based garage films and an art project from someone with plenty of friends and not real direction.

It falls way short on action even though you have plenty of guns going off. It fails on special effect, look quick, was that an effect? It fails on sound, shot as a documentary, no music is offered. Way short on story, Soldiers to chase out the remaining aliens left after an failed attack seek out the enemy from one of the few remaining outpost left in this final stage of cleanup. Fails in location, Pakistan which looks just like the California hills.

In short this movie just fails... Good luck even making it through. Fact is, you will get a better story, actors, effects, sound and story in an "Asylum Studio" mock film....

Another found footage film. These things tend to be hit or miss. I say this for the movie, it did have some decent action scenes.

The film is about a documentary crew filming the men of out post 37. Located in the middle of nowhere, the outpost is used to clean up the "leftovers" of an alien invasion.

Pulling on the chain of the currant war of the time, the movie focus on the relationship between soldiers out on the field too long before the main attraction of seeing the monster.

In a predator like matter we learned to care about the boys and why they are fighting the enemy before they get slowly picked off.

Overall it was a hit for me. I love the action sequences and it felt like a real documentary.

This film had the lowest rating of any I've actually watched. I was intrigued that seemingly so many reviewers really liked the film (I didn't get as far as the reviewers who panned it) so decided to give it a shot. I'm glad I did.

This film was different; mock- documentary, gutsy, not full of mind- blowing special effects, but full of excellent action and a not-half-bad attempt to give some depth to the characters. It's more of a traditional war movie than the title would suggest, but still plenty there for sci-fi fans. It kept me on the edge of my seat for the duration, with some serious 'BOO' moments, whereas other recent sci-fi flicks had me up and offering to make the coffee well before halfway through. Watch it.You'll love it.
