Short summary

Three lighthouse keepers on the remote Flannan Isles find a hidden trunk of gold, leading to their mysterious disappearance.
Formally known as KEEPERS, The Vanishing is Inspired by the Flannan Isle mystery. A small relief boat approaches the Isle, a tiny isolated island no bigger than a football pitch, 20 miles off a rugged coast. Its aim is to routinely replace the three lighthouse keepers, after 6 weeks alone manning the light. It nears the dock and none of the men greet them. The winch is broken. A call. Nothing. Experienced keepers Thomas, James and Donald have vanished. The lamps are clean and refilled; the table is laid for dinner. There is an upturned chair. Two sets of yellow oilskins are missing...The men were never found.

Trailers "Keepers (2018)"

Records show that on December 12th, 1900, Thomas Marshall, the second assistant keeper, wrote in the lighthouse log of "severe winds the likes of which I have never seen before in twenty years". He also noted that Principal keeper James Ducat had been "very quiet" and that the third assistant, (the Occasional) Donald MacArthur, had been crying, although MacArthur was a seasoned mariner and known as a tough brawler on the mainland. The December 13th entries stated that the storm was still raging and that all three men had been praying, despite the fact that all were experienced lighthouse keepers and were safely situated in what was a brand new lighthouse, 150 feet above sea level. Also strange is that weather records of the day had no reported storms in the area on the 12th, 13th and 14th of December that year and show the weather was calm, with storms not coming until December 17th. The final log entry at the lighthouse was made on December 15th. It simply read "Storm ended, sea calm. God is over all."

Four different lighthouses were used to create what is seen in the movie as a singular location: Mull of Galloway lighthouse was used for Exterior and interior cottages, lighthouse, lighthouse garden and the headland of the island. Killantrigan lighthouse was used as an interior staircase and side garden Corsewall lighthouse was used for a single interior shot and to create the cliff many of the cliff scenes. Cloch lighthouse, was used for the interior Lightroom as it no longer operational and beautifully preserved.

The actual location where the mystery began was in the Flannan Islands, approximately twenty miles west of the Outer Hebrides island of Lewis, in Scotland. The small island where the lighthouse is situated is called Eilean Mor. On, or about, December 15, 1900, three lighthouse keepers stationed on Eilean Mor, Thomas Marshall, James Ducat and Donald MacArthur, mysteriously vanished without a trace, and speculation as to what became of the three men is still rife after almost 118 years.

Some of the films locations in South West Scotland are filmed at Scotlands most southerly point at the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse.

This is a really good film, with a solid plot, very good acting, good scenes and photography, good storytelling. I don't get the really low ratings from many viewers ... or I do? Most of them complain about the film being slow. Ladies and gentlemen, films can be slow, can't they? THey're not bloody Ferrari, are they? What is wrong with a slow film? I think that generation of ignorant and undereducated people have been used too much to Hollywood crap and their brains have shrank up to having the attention span and stimuli need of ant-aize brain. They need explosion, sensless plot with unlikely situations and even more unlikely solutions, they need the awe. So a good solid well written and acted film, beautifully shot, with also some psychological insight becomes worth of just 1, 2 or 3 stars and is disappointing to them because it is "slow" and doesn't replicate hollywood style s h i t . I guess what people nowadays demands to films is consistent with more and more an industrial product with standard characteristics and less and less with art and insight. Not that this film is a masterpiece, it is just a very good film. Not enough? So don't pay attention to them, just sit down, relax and enjoy this beautiful film. Not easy to find these days where 95% of releases are c r a p for lobotomized people.

This is not to entertain you, this is a serious movie and very dramatic, kept me thinking all night. After checking the internet, I found out that nobody knows what happened to these 3 men , so the story in the movie is based on fiction not reality. It's a great movie , Gerard Butler in his best performance to date away from the action hero type of movies. He really deserves a nomination for this . You will not recognize him in this one.

The director of "Taboo", a very intriguing premise, good mix of genres, pretty high metascore & Gerrard Butler - of course I had to watch this! Was I disappointed? Certainly. Mild spoilers ahead.

It's an interesting story, one of those spooky historic little mysteries, that's behind the plot of this movie - it helds a hell of a lot more potential that this movie brought to the screen. The script is one the biggest flaws here, the pacing's next. There's a lot of long scenes centered around pieces of boring dialogues with little substance, but at the same time it feels like the filmmakers are extremely proud of their character writing, which they definitely shouldn't be. The story is interesting for about half of the movie, until the point when draggy pacing & unimpactful plot points just start to frustrate You. So those are the flaws, the biggest, anyways. Acting seems to be mostly on level, but, even though I feel like I can never rightly critisize actors performances, I have to say that Gerrard Butlers portrayal of a lighthouse keeper gone mad was pretty damn stale. Cinematography feels kinda shy, the beautiful setting is not used that much, for budgetary reasons, I imagine. "The vanishing" could've used a bit more violence as well, but there is a single pretty good little action scene. While the filmmakers seemingly tried really hard to create the grim, bleak atmosphere that's supposed to be there, they succeeded maybe halfway. It just doesn't get there really.

Overall I would call this an underwhelming experience that leaves the viewer slightly angry because he knows it could've been better. My rating: 5/10.

I get that this is a low budget Scottish film, but you would think at least just one of the 22 producers in this film would have complained about the plot-issue filled writing before rolling the cameras, and fine tuned the screenplay and final cut.

Actors turned first-time full length film writers Joe Bone and Celyn Jones had a great conceptual story to write a screenplay with, but they failed with the many plot issues, unanswered questions (Mercury?), unnecessary scenes and dialogue, long length, and slow pacing. Some scenes were either too long or short, too choppy or too fast.

Where this film deserves praise is Kristoffer Nyholm's directing in his first ever full length feature film. Camera angles, close-ups/distant shots and directing his cast were all on point.

Next praise goes to the outstanding score, which set the suspense and tension perfectly, and to the stunning setting visuals.

Then there were the decent performances by all cast, especially Gerard Butler, but I did have difficulty in many scenes understanding what they were saying (accent perhaps).

It's a shame such simple issues (e.g. hire a seasoned screenwriter to build on the story) weren't addressed, as I feel this film would have been near perfect. Nevertheless, still enjoyable and a well deserved 7/10 from me.

What a breath of fresh air. I don't mean the literal air on these desolate island but a movie without an intrusive soundtrack or where the producers have made sure every scene is fully explained to a dumb audience.

A stark production from a director moving up from TV for the first time and showing talent in the way that Spielberg did with Duel.

Strong acting from a small bunch of blokes in a claustrophobic environment.

The movie is a tragedy, an imaginary tale of what could have happened to the real "keepers" who indeed vanished back in mid december of 1900, and never heard of again.

The truth is that nobody knows for sure what was the fate of the real three men at the Flannan Isle, and anybody's guess is as good.

Theories abound about what really happened, from alien abduction to a giant wave, and anything in between.

Was it a terrible natural accident, such as the three men falling down a cliff or down inside a cave? Or something more sinister as the men kill each other?

Your guess is as good as mine.

In the real diary entry logged by the real keepers, they write about a terrible weather "as the one they have never seen in 20 years at sea."

That particular entry in the book is extraordinary, having in consideration that weather reports at the time indicated that weather was fine and calmed and the first rain can in on december 17, 1900. That is baffling to say the least.

Will we ever know what happened to those 3 scotish men, thomas, donald and james? sadly, most probably not, which is so sad, especially because they had wives and children.

About the movie itself, i'd say its pretty good. i give it a 6.

acting is excellent from the three main actors, as well as from the supporting characters. all did a good work, and the director set the grim tone right from the beginning.

the drama unfold with camera close to the faces of the actors to emphasis the tragedy going on, no images from the beauty of the ocean and a blue scotish sky don't expect to see that.

all is sad from the very beginning and the only laughs occurred when donald and james found gold in the chest. other than that, all is grey.

i'd recommend the movie to anyone who likes thrillers and tragedies on film. no special effects just plain good old fashioned acting (good actually) and an ending kind of predictable, still enjoyable (again if you like tragedies).

The story is epic although the crew is limited in no. but the story helped it to stay in the track of excitement. the actors are really good , and gerard butler forgot the gods of egypt and remember his self as an actor and did it right for sake of god. the movie is great , epic and dramatic.

Great to see Gerard Butler showing his true potential again opposite Peter Mullen, definitely a slow burner to start and doesn't really pick up but it suits the story and characters throughout. As the story moves along I found myself wanting it to speed up which gives it credibility as I wanted to know the outcome. Definitely worth a watch and not to be missed as some great performances by the three central characters.

If you like a slow burning drama filmed in very few locations with fewer actors, then the story may prove interesting enough together with the great performances.

For me though, it did not hold my attention enough and the dull and sometimes quite dark scenes did nothing to help this slow story unfolding.

Boring, slow and depressing for some, drama lovers may find it interesting.

This film was so slow it was painful to watch I actually set the movie on 2X speed and it seemed better.

I was really looking forward to watching this with Gerald Butler (who actually acted well) and lovely scenery which is the reason I give two stars. But the movie itself was poor. The idea was good and had lots of promise but it just dragged along and seemed to give up with no clear ending... actually the ending was terrible

Just shows you cannot go off peoples opinions. How it got 6 stars is beyond me

I think my biggest gripe with the film is how slow it is...it gets kind of boring after the first act. Also, I think I would have been more interested if in the beginning of the film they didn't tell you that all 3 men completely vanished. Why wouldn't you do that at the end...I literally was able to predict what was going to happen 10 minutes in. All in all, with the actors they had, this could have been a lot better if they added a little more imagination.

This is my first review but I felt I needed to vent once I'd watched this.

When I first read about The Vanishing/Keepers I was intrigued. I have studied the original mystery surrounding the Eilean Mor so was naturally excited to watch a movie with a possible explanation of the disappearance of the three lighthouse keepers.

    Was my curiosity aroused again?

    NOPE.

Nothing in this movie, apart from the names of the keepers and the remote location, resembled the 'facts' surrounding the mystery.

Where were the lighthouse logs detailing the extreme weather? The initial mystery was supposed to take place in December, the setting in this movie does not look like winter to me. There are so many things that have been left out.

I know that this is (possibly) artistic license but if you're going to do a movie about the unsolved mystery of The Flannan Isles then at least do your research otherwise change the names and do not base it on a real event.

The setting and acting were superb which has saved it from a 1 star review and there's a solid bit of violence about half way through but other than that you have nothing.

Initially I was excited at the prospect of seeing what the film makers made of this mystery but ultimately I was left angry and wholly disappointed.

Really enjoyed this one. Fantastic acting across the board. Really great suspense, choice of music, everything was perfect.

I really felt like I was on this lonely island in the middle of the raging ocean with the 3 characters, fighting against the unknown.

Was a great experience overall and I rate it 10/10 when wheighing it against the usual trash full of senseless violence and bloodshed; this one contains some of that for sure - but there is a great story to go side by side.

Im not sure why alot of people are rating it so low. It starts off a little slow but from the time they find the guy at the bottom of the cliff, you know now it's all going to kick off.

Tense and gripping from that moment on I really enjoyed the movie and the ripple effect of every action there after makes.

    It's a good movie.

This IS a true story, but this movie is PURE FICTION. Having read the accounts of this incident, that happened 4 days before Christmas in 1900, there is no possible way this movie should exist. If so it would be three guys getting off a boat onto an Island and then men coming to replace them and finding nothing. Because NO ONE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED!! It is also supposed to have happened in December..On an remote Island off Scotland. You know how friggin' cold that is? But the men just go outside with no coats. Also, by law, there always has to be 1 man maning the station. But so many times the three of them are outside. There is this 1 small, small, small, hint at what might be transpiring (In the movie. NOT in the true story) At one point the men find mercury had spilled out of the light from the lighthouse. They all put on these hazmat suits and Gerard Butler's character tells the young kid about the hazards of "Liquid Silver" and a little later on we see Gerard Butler staring into the light and talking gibberish to himself and for a quick second they shoot to a small puddle of mercury at his feet. So I assume that meant he got poisoned and he went berserk? I have no clue. It was Pretty to look at, The acting was good, But the story was a bust! Waste of what could have been a good film. Hopefully someone takes it and makes a movie about the incident with the investigation. That is something we know happened.

Liked the story and though it slowed down in last third, was a thought provoking story. One of the main characters descent to madness is well handled, the 3 keepers were never heard of again. It is an interesting theory and though I hoped for a supernatural ending,I still could believe what was portrayed here did happen. Acting 1st rate and being Scottish it really piqued my interest in the fallan isles and its mystery.

You go into this movie thinking it's going to have at least something good but you would be wrong. It's such a shame they made a good story from actual events but no one really knows what happened. All we do know is that three men were on an island and they disappeared watching The Watchtower and that is it the mystery has been there forever. So when I saw that someone had taken the time to maybe fill in the blanks I was excited but all they did is make a horrible movie the point where it doesn't even leave you satisfied in any way. I hope no one wastes their time with this film it is definitely that hopeless and more than anything disappointing. I literally almost stopped watching it part way through because the story was getting that disappointing and I had to force myself to watch the end which made me so upset I don't want to use the language I was thinking at the end of this film.

The Vanishing is surprisingly good, it tells a sad twisted story with a great deal of mastery, the plot is straightforward but it's actualized with breathtaking performances by everyone in the film, it has this deep eerie and dark feeling to it that adds this gripping factor as we watch dramatic events unfold in front of us, granted, that it has some structural problems with its narrative but the end product is so captivating you just can't take your eyes off it. The slow burn storytelling adds a great deal of suspense as we ourselves examine and analyze what could happen, what I also loved is that through the film itself is dealing with a moral problem as its characters struggle to cope with their new situations, it is really beautiful to watch. The Vanishing does its story justice as we're offered a chilling narrative that doesn't disappoint at all, an all around great effort.

This film sucks you in early on, the journey begins and you start to learn about the characters bit by bit as the as the story develops. The tension really built, I was hooked..... And as the drama unfolded, I nearly jumped out of my seat a couple of times! It is extremely well written, directed and performed. A thrilling watch, based on a true story and a theory, it had us talking for ages afterwards. In fact, I will watch it again!!

Money is truly the root of all evil... Or shall I say gold? The pace of the movie is a bit slow for some, but the slowness gives you time to keep up emotionally and to really feel the rawness off the characters. Great acting. I recommend this movie.
