Short summary
On their way back home Daniel and his family plan to stop at a fort for the night. When they arrive they find it has been destroyed by Indians with only a few survivors. The surviving soldiers seem to be hiding some kind of secret.
The title is from an ancient proverb: "For want of a nail the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe the horse was lost. For want of a horse the rider was lost. For want of a rider the battle was lost. For want of a battle the kingdom was lost. And all for the want of a horseshoe nail."
