Short summary

Metropolis, three months later. Clark Kent (under the influence of the red kryptonite ring) has becomes a criminal, heisting banks, going to night-clubs, and living under the alias 'Kal'. But he comes into conflict with not only his Kryptonian-marked chest, but a ruthless and greedy gangster, named Morgan Edge, who wants an ever increasing percentage of the stolen loot, and also begins to suspect Clark's alien origins. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor is declared dead, but he is living with the weird Louis Leery Jr. in an isolated desert island. Back in Smallville, Dr. Helen Bryce comes to his funeral and meets Lionel Luthor in the mansion where secrets are disclosed. Lana Lang and Jonathan Kent try to bring Clark back to Smalville. Unsucessful after Lana's pleas to Clark, Jonathan makes contact in the cave with the spirit of Jor-El who imbues Jonathan with Kryptonian super-powers to combat Clark and bring him home... in exchange for a price. Also, Chloe enjoys her new job at the Daily Planet, ...

Chloe (Allison Mack) sported a distinctive asymmetric hairstyle, a style Mack had adopted over the summer hiatus. However, it was felt that the look wasn't right for Chloe, so Mack wore extensions for the subsequent few episodes whilst her natural hair grew longer. Mack has often joked that no-one in Smallville appeared to notice Chloe's hair changing length over the course of one episode.

At the beginning of the episode, Clark runs into a phone booth and rips open his shirt to reveal his 'shield' burn pattern, reminiscent of Clark Kent running into a phone booth and changing into Superman, revealing the "S" on his chest as in the DC Comics lore.

While being erased, the mark on Clark's chest in the final split second resembles the "S" sign that Superman will wear in the future.

In the commentary for this episode, it is mentioned that the pre-credit scenes of Clark having fun with the Red Kryptonite (Destroying ATMs, etc.) were added in a week before the episode aired. Gough and Miller were all for the idea as long as the network paid.

Terence Stamp, the voice of Jor-El, played Gen. Zod in Superman I & II.

The actor Ryan Robbins that is "stranded" on the island with Lex also plays in Arrow(which also happens to be based off of a DC comic book character, the Green Arrow) season 4 where he is a guard of sorts that happens to be convening on the island Lian yu.

Rutger Hauer (Morgan Edge) returns to the DC Universe as Wayne Enterprise's chairman Earle in Batman Begins(2005).

In Metropolis, three months later, Clark Kent becomes a criminal, heisting banks and going to night-clubs. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor is declared dead, but he is living with the weird Louis Leery Jr. (Ryan Robbins) in an isolated island. Dr. Helen Bryce comes to his funeral and meets Lionel Luthor in the mansion, when secrets are disclosed. Lana Lang and Jonathan Kent try to bring Clark back to Smalville.

The criminal life of Clark Kent, robbing banks and dealing with criminals, probably will have consequences. The plot of the black widow Dr. Helen Bryce is the greatest surprise of this episode. My vote is nine.

Clark and Lex find themselves in similar, yet different, predicaments in this excellent premiere of Season 3.

Both Clark and Lex are alone, one way or another: Clark internally, and Lex in reality. Clark doesn't know who he really is, and he doesn't want to know. He has fled the burden of his purpose on Earth and turned away his intuitions, with the help of the red stone, to cause plenty of trouble in Metropolis. Meanwhile, Lex really is alone. He has been betrayed by his new bride Helen Bryce, who seeks after Lex's immense wealth. Stranded on an island, at least he finds a friend. Or so he thinks.

This episode is great because of various reasons: it continues Clark's internal struggle, in features Metropolis for the second time in the series, and it does not wrap up by the end, unlike most "Smallville" episodes. This is simply Part 1 to a surprising and shocking second episode.

I always did love Clark when he had some red krytonite in him. It made him have a backbone & not be as soft as he usually is, but I love him just the same badass or no bad ass.

This time around Lana & Chloe are not as annoying to me. I guess because I have seen the show all the way to the end & I loved how everything worked out.

So crazy how the deal that Jonathan Kent made with Jo-El sealed his fate... I know Clark looks back on his rebellious teenage years & regrets the decision he made this episode.

Also, this episode started Lex's transformation into the dark psychopath he will eventually become.
