Brown strikes a bargain and purchases a mirror for ten cents. While showing it to Mrs. Brown, he breaks it. A negro servant shows him a dream book, in which it says, "to break a mirror, means seven years' bad luck." Brown does not believe in such rot. But the plaster begins to fall from the ceiling, hitting Brown on the head. He calls for the dream book to see how the spell can be broken. He learns from the book that he must obtain another mirror exactly like the one broken, and get someone knowingly to break it. He starts out but numerous accidents befall him. Finally he hires a rig, which is wrecked, and he is compelled to pay for it. At last he arrives at the store only to find that the last mirror has been sold to a man a few seconds before he arrived. He runs after the man and induces him to sell him the mirror. He encounters many difficulties in trying to get someone to break the mirror. He finally succeeds in getting a Chinaman to break it.
