Short summary

Unlock the secrets of the Dragon Eye and come face to face with more dragons than anyone has ever imagined as Hiccup, Toothless and the Dragon Riders soar to the edge of adventure.
Dagur the Deranged escapes from prison and ventures in the uncharted territories to build an armada against Hiccup and his Dragon Riders. Coming across a cylinder (christened "Dragon Eye") that provides information on the uncharted territories, Hiccup and his quirky team search the region looking for both Dagur and hitherto unknown species of dragons, eventually leaving Berk to build for themselves a new and distant base of operations called Dragon's Edge.

Trailers "Dragons: Race to the Edge "

In late 2016 in an interview with a podcast, a writer for Dragons: Race to the Edge (2015) confirmed that Netflix ordered two more seasons, giving Dragons: Race to the Edge (2015) six seasons instead of its original four.

Several of the dragons are inspired by different type of animals. Gronckles, such as Meatlug, are based on Bulldogs. Stormfly has a lot of aspects of a parrot. Toothless is inspired by cats, mainly a panther.

Takes inspiration from Indiana Jones and Star Wars.

In How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), it was made more than clear than no one aside from Berk ride dragons in the Archipelago. This is why Valka was such a surprise. Stoick even told Hiccup their tribe are best off on their own, they don't have any alliances, there are no other dragon-riding tribes and that Berk should continue to keep to themselves. This is why one of Hiccup and Astrid's hobbies are to scare off other villages with their dragons whenever they are off exploring together. Race to the Edge completely backtracks on this by creating characters of their own (Heather and Dagur) to be a part of the Dragon Riders. There is no Heather or Dagur in the movies and for a TV-series that claims to be a bridge between the first two movies, this is considered a really big continuity error.

Heather has a similar hairstyle to Astrid in How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014).

The characters are aged up to be around 18/19 years old.

The series is set a year before How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) and 4 years after How to Train Your Dragon (2010).

Builds upon the first and second seasons of Cartoon Network's Dragons: Riders of Berk (2012).

During the course of the series we see Hicup developing the 1st generations of his flame sword and his glide wings.

David Tennant who voices Spitelout, Snotlout's father, also voiced the audio books in the How to Train Your Dragon series.

Based on How To Train Your Dragon book series by Cressida Cowell.

The origin and legend of the Death Song is mentioned on School of Dragons.

Dragons: Race to the Edge (2015) often strays away from canon to serve its own original characters.

Tuffnut's fierce and protective loyalty towards his pet chicken is a reference to the Viking-inspired computer game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Due to a glitch in that game, if players kill a chicken in a village, the entire populace will try to murder them in revenge.

The Titan Comics published several Graphic Novels inspired by DreamWorks Dragons.

Out of 52 episodes, excluding the two episodes that are about her relationship with Hiccup, Astrid has only gotten one character episode. Out of 52 episodes, Ruffnut has one episode that focuses on her as an individual (Wingnut). Out of 25 episodes Heather has gotten 8 whole episodes where she is the focus.

Jay Baruchel and Alfred Molina worked together in The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010).

Dragons: Race to the Edge (2015) is animated overseas.

Netflix original series.

Please don't listen to the naysayers, I doubt they have even bothered to watch the show. I can agree that Heather is poorly written and intrusive, she clearly shouldn't have existed, there is no doubt there, but the rest of the show is pretty darn good! This show is not only great but it gets better and better for each season! The last season blew me away, it was so much more than I could've imagined.

Usually a show lessens in quality and becomes more stale over time. With Race to the Edge it is the exact opposite! It started out exceptional enough but then it got even better! Midway through the action, romance, storytelling and stakes leveled up and it just became insanely good!

As a big Hiccstrid shipper, I must say the writers did a tremendous job with Hiccup and Astrid's relationship. They started out as friends and then halfway into the show we started to see their bond grow stronger and watch them fall in love. I honestly feared they wouldn't do their relationship justice but they did not only meet my expectations, they blew me away! After watching each season back to back, I can say with confidence that's most well written romantic relationship I have seen in an animated series.

Another big surprise for me was how they handled Hiccup's relationship with his father. The last season focused heavily on that and the writers did a superb job! It hits you right in the heart.

They really managed to tie the series in with the second movie, which was always going to be difficult but they made it seem effortless. It was all done very tastefully! Well, all except for the unwanted Heather story, which the show probably would've been better off without.

Aside from that, I would like to say thank you to Douglas Sloan, Art Edler Brown, John Tellegen, Jack C. Thomas, FM DeMarco, Will Morey, TJ. Sullivan and everyone else. Especially thank you to Douglas Sloan and Art Brown for running the show and putting so much time and effort into it. Thank you for all the wonderful 4 years of amazing content that made everyone cry in joy, frustration, anger, happiness, sadness and shock. You evoked so many emotions in us fans and made the experience very memorable! We will always cherish this. Thank you and good luck with your other projects!

Having finally finished watching the entire Dragons: Race to the Edge to its full fruition, I'm going to retract my previous review.

Race to the Edge is not as formulaic and repetitive as I had initially assumed. The first season might have been a little dull but by the second- and third season, the show is a full- on action packed adventure with the right amount of romance, comedy and drama. Viggo Grimborn is one of the most cunning and vicious villains to grace animated television. It's just an added bonus that he is voiced by the great Alfred Molina.

Adults will enjoy this alongside with their children. It builds up to the second How to Train Your Dragon, showing us how the youths grew up. The animation as well is remarkable, pretty impressive for a mini television show.

I am a big fan of the How To Train Your Dragon movie franchise and was rather excited to delve into this series.

Many have complained that there are errors and elements that are left out of the series and contradictions to the second film. I can see why they aren't completely satisfied with some character developments and focus. However after completing the series and waiting until the 2018 final series to come out, I can honestly say it was a wonderful experience with alot of adventures, interesting new dragons and characters and concludes nicely to lead onto the second film.

The characters have lots of development, with the introduction of new unique characters with interesting back stories. The series is PG and connects with young kids and the older generation. The kids loved the action and all the dragons and jokes, whilst the adults also enjoyed. A great family series.

I won't go into too much detail as do not want to spoil the series, but if you like the franchise and want to experience new adventures of hiccup and toothless, along with an array of colourful new dragons. This is the series for you.

For someone who loves the How to Train Your Dragon Francaise like me they will enjoy this series very much. The first 2 seasons were a bit boring and there wasn't a very good plot and there wasn't much character development. But from season 3-6 it was a very impressive series. The characters themselves were put into a lot more detail and there were twists and turns you could never see coming. Some of the more recent characters like Viggo Grimborn and Mala were very engaging. Viggo is a very lovable villian throughout the series mainly because he is very intelligent and makes an impact to the other characters especially Hiccup. Mala is a very strong female character that was very well spoken and very well done. The relationship between characters such as the relationship between Astrid and Hiccup was also well done, and added a lot of depth especially in the last season. Fans like me loved all the Hiccstrid moments throughout the series. I also love how we pay more attention to more miner characters such as Tuffnut and Ruffnut because they are given very little detail in the movies. Another thing i love is the soundtrack. The HTTYD francaise has always had amazing music and they nailed it throughout the series. The character development was very well done in preperation to HTTYD as we get to see different perspectives to all the characters. The revealations were built up through a period of time and kept fans on the edges of their seats to see what would happen, and to develop many theories. This series was very thought out, fans realised this in the final season when they explained some very important details and facts about one particular thing that I will not say so that you can discover it yourself.

Overall, this series is a very enjoyable series and was a great bridge between HTTYD 1 & 2. I recommend this series for 11- bascially any age, because adults I know enjoy this series very much.

If you're a Dragon Riders fan, then this show will satisfy your Dragon needs. The characters are the same except for a few little tweaks but that's bound to change. (*wink* *wink*) Stories about more dragons, discovering and building and fighting. All your favorite How To Train Your Dragon jazz. With new characters to go. This series follows, Dragons Riders of Berk and other Dragons shows. This is the third installment, and is in between HTTYD and HTTYD2. But this looks like HTTYD2 character styles. The excellent Animation and story is sure to impress and i hope they continue to make many more episodes. Releasing a season about every 6 months on Netflix, i'm always counting down the days until they drop a new one. And i wish it was more and sooner. But this is a great bonus while you're waiting for the next HTTYD3 Movie. Which is taking forever. But all in all, the Dreamwork animators have out done themselves, yet again. And hopefully continue to do so.

Dragons: race to the edge is quite possibly the best dragons title so far. the characters are interesting, the plots diverse. this explains what happens to the gang after the 2 movies and, although I've only watched 3 seasons so far as cbbc is behind, it is already a favourite of mine. the dragon hunters story arc is interesting while still being funny at the same time. overall I would recommend this series to anyone who likes drama with comedy thrown in as well

Holy sh-t. Heather might one of the worst cases of a Mary Sue ever. It's almost shocking just how bad and disgusting this character is. She doesn't even deserve to be called a character. Even after four seasons of the writers parading her around, she is still so despised and rightly so.

From her introduction on the old cartoon network show it was already clear this was a Mary Sue we are dealing with. She gave Hiccup advice on Toothless's tail. This nobody-character actually popped in out of nowhere and gave Hiccup Horrendous Haddock advice on his own invention that was supposedly revolutionary? What complete and utter garbage! The next thing we know this Heather character is riding on dragons in less than a day after learning about them. Her redemption which follows is plain stupid. Just because she comes to the riders' rescue we are supposed to forgive her vile behavior all the sudden? This gimmick does not happen once but on a regular basis where Heather is concerned. She acts like a complete a-hole, the writers justify her sh-tty behavior, everyone forgives her and it's all good and forgotten. Until next time when it happens all over again, and it does.

The next time it happens is when she pops up out of nowhere on the Netflix show. Like last time, this Mary Sue gets two episodes about her. They could never bother to give any of the actual important characters that people actually give a sh- t about two- parts but Heather gets them in a tow.

Have Mary Will Sue part 1 and 2 are garbage to put it nicely. Heather never even deserved to be a dragon rider in the first place and suddenly she shows up with her own dragon, and not just any dragon. Heather is so "special and unique" she needed a dragon that could reflect that. If Toothless had not been the only dragon of his kind you can bet they would have tried to pull off this sh-t with Heather's very own Mary Sue dragon.

They make such a big deal out of her introduction it's almost ludicrous and not to mention offensive. Why should the heroes give a damn about this garbage Mary Sue? Even better, why should the fans give a damn?

Her tragic past is hilarious and moronic. The original parents she was given were especially designed to look like her but are now actually not her parents after all! The Mary Sue needed more to whine about and a better source for all that angst inside of her just waiting to spill out. So turns out, in an over-the-top twist she is actually secret royalty from the Beserker tribe and Dagur's sister no less. She looks like neither of those things but it's not like they could have made her more similar to Dagur after upgrading her model, right? Another ridiculous fact is how Heather's adoptive parents named her the exact same name her supposed birth father gave her. She was only just a toddler when found by them but remembered her own name, remembered the entire history behind her horn, remembered the history behind her Dragon Eye lens.

More ridiculousness is how the horn just happened to be from Stoick out of all people and it's such a special and one of a kind gift that when Astrid dressed up as Heather in the Mary Sue Report part 2, she had the exact same replica of the horn on her, ROFL. Just shows how forced Heather's retconning and entire character-basis is.

Like a classic Mary Sue Heather is good at everything the other riders expertise in, and even surpasses them on multiple occasions. She also gets complimented by every single character. Be it a stranger or the poor protagonist himself. The funniest part was when she was called sincere, brave, smart, kind, trustworthy. Heather is the only character that has regularly lied, betrayed and manipulated. All of this praise is complete and utter bullsh-t. Actions speak louder than words and Heather has not done anything to make her worthy of being a rider. On the contrary she has shown plenty of reasons why she is undeserving and is just getting everything handed to her on a silver platter.

If you are like me and love the httyd movies to death I DO NOT RECOMMEND WATCHING THIS. I REGRET WATCHING. DO NO WASTE YOUR MONEY

Where to begin? Hiccup and Astrid relationship.. THEY RUIN IT. In the first episode they make it look like Astrid was going to leave Hiccup if they'd not found the dragon eye.. NOPE! In the other episodes Hiccup doesn't care for her! This is the same girl he LOVED in the movies. In the heather episodes that I HATED we hear Astrid say they are just friends... WHAT WERE YOU DOING FOR THREE WHOLE YEARS

I also hated Toothless and Hiccup in this show. Hiccup is so selfish and only cares about himself. He acts like Toothless is his PET not his BEST FRIEND AND SOULMATE. I hate this Hiccup. WORST HICCUP EVER!

Heather is the worst character by far. She is a female Hiccup and she gets so many scenes alone with Hiccup just because she is the creators wet dreamgirl. She looks nothing like Dagur, only good character. They could've made her look more like Dagur but then she would be ugly so they didn't.

Everything will make you fall out love with dragons. The character you loved like HICCUP behaves really selfish and relationships like Toothcup and Hiccstrid are ruined. This show just mocks the movies don't waste your money.

I am simply amazed that so much was accomplished with such a small budget and cartoon. The animation is very impressive for just a netflix only series compared with the earlier cartoon that ran until 2014. My only flaw with the show would be the lack of character development throughout the show, but its not quite a big enough flaw to constitute anything less than 10 stars. The creators of this show have perhaps started a new era of TV show movie spinoffs, but we will just have to wait and see. Again, I am very impressed by everything that this wonderful kids show has to offer to the netflix community, and I certainly wish that it would still come on regular TV so others that don't have netflix could enjoy this show. But otherwise, great job, DreamWorks!

I don't know what I expected but it certainly wasn't this chaotic bundle of mess. I think that is an accurate way of summing up the entirety of the show.

One of my biggest pet-peeves is the excessive and heavy focus on Heather, (she is in over 30 episodes!) This character is so redundant yet she takes over the entire plot and sidelines and upstages all the other preexisting characters. She is easily one of the lowest and weakest parts of the show. The story would have stood stronger on the shoulders of the dragon riders - the actual heroes. It's the dragon riders we, the audience, have an emotional attachment to - not Heather. I really couldn't care any less about her and her family drama. It's all so very annoying and rather boring to endure.

The second issues is the plot in itself. It makes absolutely no sense when you take the movies into account and consideration. There are so many contradictions and continuity problems I have lost count of them. The writing is mediocre at best, only saved by Tuff and Ruff but even they can't save this mess. The writers wasted so much time on the unnecessary Heather-Dagur arc that the Viggo- Ryker ending, the Hiccup-Astrid relationship and the wrapping up of everything - it all just feels tacked on in the last minute.

If you are a fan of Hiccup, Astrid or Hiccup/Astrid - do yourself a favor: Stick to the movies only. You aren't missing any worthy character- or relationship development here.

According to this show, Hiccup is a bland, selfish and annoyingly perfect "hero" while Astrid is a bland, brutish, angry and narrow minded "one-note" character.

An extremely superficial and degrading interpretation of the two most beloved human characters from the movies.

Hiccup is not the russet-haired, tooth-gaped, dorky but sarcastic little boy from HTTYD. Neither is he the handsome, ridiculously theatric but impressive and charming guy from HTTYD 2. The guy who would put the people he loves first. The guy who cares for humans and dragons alike. Irresponsible, sometimes even a little overconfident, but still endearing and likable. The Hiccup everyone fell in love because of his soft and welcoming personality.

That guy is nowhere to be found here. Calling Hiccup unlikeable on Race to the Edge is an understatement. More often than not, he is used as a self-insert by the show's writers and forced into obsessing over the show's original characters.

Astrid is the main female character of HTTYD. She is praised by fans for being a girly girl and able to kick butt at the same time. Astrid on Race to the Edge is masculinized and written as a brute. Even her fighting style, usually acrobatic - relying on technique over strength, is inconsistent and badly executed. The show went as far as painting her disrespectful, rude and standoffish. There is lots of passive aggressive hate from the writers directed at her.

Race to the Edge completely slaughters Hiccup and Astrid's characters. It's no wonder their relationship is handled as carelessly. They couldn't write the characters right, it shouldn't come as a shock that their interpretation of their relationship is just as disappointing.

    Again, stick to the movies.

I watched the movie versions of How to Train Your Dragon. Loved them. First one more than second one. That being said I started watching the Race to the Edge series and I've been laughing myself silly (er) ever since.

No, it's not all about Hiccup and Astrid, but frankly, are the ingénues ever the best characters? I find Ruffnut and Tuffnut to be HILARIOUS and worth spending the time to "relax and enjoy" the ride in the clown car.

It's not about reality or angst. Not about sweet, sweet cartoon romance (cuz, that's not weird at all). It's about jiggling that funny bone once in awhile. Shoot, I've laughed more at the antics of the twins than watching most other shows of late that claim to be comedies.

See what you think, but I'm hoping that we get to continue to watch the twins navigate their days. Well, maybe not navigate...more like accidentally trip through.

The entire story was planned to revolve around a character that has not a single thing to do with the movie franchise. This character with a very unViking name, Heather (yes, that is the character's actual name, believe it or not) and a very unViking and non-Nordic appearance, is forced down our throats at every possible opportunity. Even Heather's voice sounds extremely cheesy, fake and out of place. This character does simply not belong in this world. She sounds, looks and acts like a typical "insert" character.

The first season builds up to Heather's infamous and over-dramatic introduction. Forget about the canon characters. It's not important to show how they developed or give them any valuable role in the plot. It's more important to show off a "Mary Sue" by have her copy all the canon characters and then have these characters act like Heather's personal cheerleaders.

Douglas Sloan and Art Brown make Dean DeBlois characters so obsessed with their precious little Heather it's almost unbearable to watch.

In the second season Heather the amazing and special acts as a spy for the riders. Her role is supposed to lure Viggo (the villain) out because how else could the canon characters have possibly found him. It's not like they managed to find Drago on their own or anything. Without the ever so precious Heather's help.

Heather is so completely useless that at the end of Maces and Talons part 1, she has to actively get herself captured by Viggo. She literally flies into the net Viggo shoots out, knowing full well she was going to be taken down. As bait she gets to stay relevant a little longer and play damsel distress so Hiccup come and save her just like he did in Have Dragon Will Travel, when she got herself captured on purpose back then too. This gives Douglas and Art the opportunity to make Hiccup obsessed with saving their precious OC.

At the end of the season, Heather takes off without a word after making the riders lose the dragon eye and gain nothing but another enemy. According to Douglas Sloan and Art Brown, this earns their "Mary Sue" a spot among the riders.

In the third season, it's time for Heather to become an official part of the gang, (even though she is not even an official character.) The entire third act itself is dedicated to make her seem like one of the canon characters. Only problem is.. Heather is not a real character. She is nothing but fanfiction OC, add on, insert character, Mary Sue, expendable.

Heather is NOT a part of the gang, but Doug and Art still try very hard to make her seem so, even if it's at the cost of other characters.

The third season also shows us how Heather is all around perfect. She can cook, she can draw maps, she can build things, she is as skilled of a fighter as Astrid is (despite only 3 years of experience against Astrid's 19 years,) she is as skilled of a dragon rider as the gang (despite only being a rider for a short time,) she is as intelligent as Fishlegs, she is as caring about dragons as Hiccup. On top of that, Heather can sing like a Disney princess! Tone Death was definitely written to show off Heather's many talents as well as to show off how amazing she is with babies and her motherly side. Because those things are so relevant to the franchise! Whatever flaws she possesses are all excused by her oh so "tragic" past, which she brings up as often as she can.

In the fourth season Heather continues to be a pest, annoyance and an intruder. We have to pretend she is a dragon rider like the rest even though she is nothing but a fake. She will always stick out as a sore thumb. The gang is more than complete without her. Heather was just added to undermine the other riders with her special snowflake status.

This show is under no circumstance canon material. Adding in some lame and unnecessary details such as the origin of Hiccup's flight suit or flame sword makes no difference. Ignoring Hiccup and Astrid's relationship for almost four seasons by having Hiccup obsess over their precious Mary Sue instead and then spoon feeding the desperate shippers with kisses in the last three episodes to shut them up is not the way to go. This doesn't make Race to the Edge canon. What would have made it canon was if it had respected the movie's characters and focused on actually bridging the movies instead of wasting itself on an obnoxious Mary Sue.

Race to the Edge is nothing but professional fanfiction.

The main story in Race to the Edge builds up to Heather defeating her brother Dagur the Deranged in order to take his place as the new Beserker Chief to bring peace. A Copy/Paste of Zuko's story from ATLA only with a boneless character. Heather and Dagur were created for the show and fortunately make no appearance in the award winning movies written/directed by Oscar nominee Dean DeBlois. Dagur the Deranged voiced by David Faustino breaks out of prison at the most convenient time - just as Hiccup and the riders leave Berk to explore outside the Archipelago. Heather as well voiced by Mea Whitman decides to terrorize ships and be discovered by the riders exactly three years later. The riders look older but behave and interact as strangers. They are static, lifeless shadows of their strong movie counterparts.

The only noticeable changes in character behavior comes from Heather. Race to the Edge is her story - there is a long line of episodes dedicated only to parade her. DeBlois' characters may be on the forefront but they are reduced to naught but background noise next to Heather.

As excited as I am for the third season of 'Dragons: Race to the Edge', I am also concerned about the lack of development between Hiccup and Astrid, as well as their own personal development.

It seems as though their relationship has been on a stand-still for a long while. These two have been 'almost there' since they were 15. And now that they have reached adulthood, with their friendship consistently dangling below that point where they know and want to be at, it seems to now be damaging their relationship.

In Race to the Edge, Hiccup's current behaviour towards Astrid has given me the impression that he cares for her as a person of higher power in a workplace cares for his employee. He doesn't think twice about putting her in her place and scolds her for not disclosing information about Heather's ulterior motives, regardless of whether or not she was sworn to secrecy for Heather's safety.

Hiccup doesn't seem to have the higher tolerance for his teammates as he used to, and he is beginning to come off as self-righteous and stand-offish. He is no longer an enjoyable character, but a force to be reckoned with, even when it comes to his closest allies and friends. He seems to only behave compassionately towards his father and Heather, which clearly speaks volumes when it comes to where he and Astrid stand. Regardless of how Heather feels about Fishlegs, however playful or platonic it may seem.

As for Astrid - the strong and self-assured shield-maiden that is Astrid - where has she gone? She seems to have been replaced by someone who is easily submissive, emotional, and eager to please. Astrid has always been one to speak her mind, providing a blunt force of reason yet remaining supportive of one's decision, especially Hiccup's. In Race to the Edge, when current situations are not in her favour, all that she provides is emotionally-driven excuses and complaints, and then says nothing more. Astrid seems to have lost her playful nature that we have all come to love in 'How to Train Your Dragon 2', as well as her honest, competitive and fiercely independent personality that was evident in both installments.

As for Hiccup, he needs to understand that entering into a situation with an easy manner and an open mind just might help open up ways of solving a problem without further conflict, especially when it comes to his teammates. He needs to understand that everybody makes mistakes (including himself), and needs to learn to forgive and forget. Dwelling on and punishing himself for his own mistakes is not healthy either. I have noticed that Astrid does this also, especially when it harms the people she cares about, indirectly or not. This requires some serious personal healing and self- development.

It also requires closure, being able to be honest about their feelings. Hiccup and Heather may understand one another and possess a special connection, however, when it comes to Astrid it is more than just a budding relationship – we have all seen it, not just because it is evident in the second installment. It is obvious that there is a lot of pent-up feelings and emotions when it comes to Hiccup and Astrid. It is now time to lay all of the cards down on the table - being open and vulnerable to what may come of their relationship is long overdue.

hey its a cartoon , things happen in cartoons just like life, don't try to pick it apart , just watch it and enjoy it, slapstick humour is good for a laugh and as a sixty year old I enjoyed it lots. Life lessons are there if you want to read it that way but why bother. Watch and enjoy it for what it is light entertainment. the dragons all have their own personalities and so do the riders, If people look between the lines you can see traits of people you know amongst all the characters. When I was growing up cartoons had far more violence and far meaner villains, I have had many laughs at the situations the writers create and have commented to a lot of my friends that they should watch these shows including the movies purely for the entertainment value

It may be surprising to some readers that I am honestly no fan of the How to Train Your Dragons movies (the climatic arc of the book series is actually better). While they have excellent animation (holy ***, that Bewilderbeast fight!) and a few poignant moments, I feel like they have a tendency to overglorify clichéd storytelling and characterization (particularly that of the dragon riders sans Hiccup and Astrid) as 'epic', leading to a sense of weird unintentional egotism. One of the aspects of the films I did undoubtedly enjoy though was the sense that the films were only scratching the surface of this grand dragon-inhabited Viking setting, and that there was huge potential for development and worldbuilding that could be expanded on outside of the films, e.g: in a TV (or Netflix now, what's the real difference?) show?

This review is not about the How to Train Your Dragon films. It's about the Netflix show 'Dragons: Race to the Edge'. And why have I spent an entire paragraph rambling on about the films when this is the IMDb page for none other than the show?

I guess it's because Race to the Edge is such a void.

As I said above, there was (and still is, without a doubt) huge potential to develop and expand the Hiccup universe outside of the films, and Race to the Edge fumbles at this in significantly unspectacular fashion. My only guess as to why this is the case is that the Dreamworks bigsuits basically told Art Brown and Douglas Sloan (the head writers) that they couldn't develop the characters/setting too much for risk of casual viewers of the films 'missing out' on these details, basically sticking the show into a rut it rarely manages to escape from. Now we're stuck with the same bland clique of riders from the first film largely undeveloped from their original selves. Hiccup is a bland (and kind of selfish and pretentious, for some reason now) hero, Astrid is an angry, temperamental jerk (prior to recent episodes, where the writers have abruptly zigzagged back to using her characterization from the end of the first film because they kind of forgot to build on her romance with Hiccup in most prior episodes and are now compensating), Fishlegs is a wimp stuck in the rut of learning homogeneous lessons every time he is given any focus, Snotlout is a braindead jerkass (although there are some flawed but well- intention-ed episodes that do try to develop him) and Ruffnut and Tuffnut are dumbasses obsessed with chickens and inanimate objects to the point of severe mental defect (both of these gags are painfully driven into the ground by episode 10 of the first season). And then we have Heather, a bland, 'pathos-driven' Mary Sue obviously given the Ascended Extra treatment because the writers prefer her to Astrid (explains the latter's characterization here well) and she isn't in either of the films, leaving them with free reign over a dead-on-arrival character. Having Tinkerbell's voice ain't gonna help ya, lady.

Race to the Edge also bleeds from severe wounds in other areas. Episode premises are largely bland (most are either narratives featuring a gimmicky new dragons because damn we gotta sell us some action figures, or character-focused episodes that 9.5 times out of 10 never tell us anything about the characters that we couldn't have already abducted (word is not 'deduced', by the way) from the first film), the villains are garbage (oh look, an insane, hammy guy who is later reformed. Oh look, evil backstabbing dragon trappers. Very compelling. No reference as to what even happened to Alvin from 'Defenders of Berk' either), the character designs begin to slip into 'awful' territory after a while (yikes, that queen and her right-man man!) not even closely resembling the quirky yet detailed designs from the films, the dialog is bland and vapid and any gags with the potential to be humorous are quickly hammered into the ground in case any poor viewer dare find them amusing the first time (look at the 'gambling' rumors from the season 4 finale). And the worst issue is that outside of a few small islands designed mostly as homes for the Toys/Dragons of the Week, not much development is given to the barren land of the Hiccup universe. No other Viking tribes asides from one 'sane', two 'insane' and one 'hidden village ruled by Mary Sue queen'? No history even implied on the previous Hiccups to set up anything from the films (isn't that one of the show's purposes)? When you have five seasons to do this, you should be doing this, not wasting away life by writing another 'hey looks guys, aren't Ruffnut and Tuffnut stupid? Herp derp derp' episode?

Basically, it's a cheap spin off that young viewers might enjoy, but it has little relating to the films. Watch if you're a die-hard Hiccup fan (although even this might be questionable, considering the even- poorer characterization in the show) or are under the age of twelve. Otherwise, stick to the films or go read the books (the last book is pretty amazing).

I was truly blown away by this show's animation and potential for story and plot details. Although the show has a few minor flaws, such as the lack of true water animation. (a bit picky, but stay with me) the rest of the animation, such as the characters, is absolutely fantastic. The individual stories each have an excellent plot, each working together to form a reasonably coherent story. Each character contributes their own special part to the story, but Hiccup really stands out. I would easily recommend this to any How to Train Your Dragon fan, and anyone really looking for a good story. I am also really impressed at DreamWorks for making this. I mean, the animation is (mostly) pretty solid, and the characters are all really special. Just wonderful.

He rejects new people and dragons, then leaves Berk undefended. He cannot get his team to work together. Dagur keeps getting tougher, but the former Defenders of Berk do not.

I would rather be eaten by a dragon.

Is it just me, or do the bad guys always win in the end. Everyone always gets away, they get the gold chest, they get the dragon lenses, blah blah. I just get annoyed. Anyway it's my 6yr olds favorite, so we watch it. But, it gets on my nerves
