Short summary
Most of the action takes place in Paris and was filmed there in June 1967, while the prologue and epilogue were shot in Hollywood on December 24, 1967. These wraparound segments were shot to give context to the Paris footage and also conveyed the real-life exhaustion The Monkees were feeling toward filming a weekly television series. They were the final segments ever shot for the original series.
Micky's girlfriend (soon to be wife) Samantha Juste has a brief cameo-during the short montage played during the William Tell Overture, she can be seen holding Micky while he sleeps on a bus.
There was no actual Monkeemania in Paris when the band visited, and they were mostly free to roam the city. The show's producers hired some French models to accompany the Monkees, after pretending to recognize and chase them for the camera.
The episode includes Michael Nesmith's song "Don't Call On Me", which he'd written before the Monkees, as an experiment with lounge-style music. Producer Chip Douglas coached Nesmith on singing softly and up close to the microphone, to utilize the "proximity effect" and sound warmer to listeners. Released versions included an intro and outro (recorded later, as the Monkees pretended to visit Chicago's Pump Room, and TV producer Robert Rafelson noodled on a piano) with applause and dialogue, to give the track a live feel. Most of these versions segue directly from one part to the next; the 1986 Rhino LP and cassette reissues leave a noticeable gap.
