The year is 1997. An economic crisis hits Asia and Korea. The economic downturn effects many families in Korea; one of these families is the family of Han, Suhee. Han (family name) Suhee is a high school girl when the crash hits. Her father is an alcoholic, and her mother works at a nearby factory. Our story begins when Suhees father steals all the college tuition money her mother has saved for her. He leaves and never returns. As the saga continues, Suheees mom develops breast cancer and the factory closes at the same time. She leaves for the States to set up a better life for Suhee. For a while, our young girl is alone in Korea, working odd jobs and finishing high school. Suhee follows later, illegally, smuggled in through Canada by Sam Butler, a marriage broker. Sam houses Suhee in his home and makes her work for him. It seems that Sun-Ja, Suhees mother owes him $17,000.
