Short summary

THE RISING LIGHT, the new film from Hollinsworth Productions for Christmas 2013, is quite unlike any other science fiction film. It's a road movie. It's an odyssey across fantastical realms and worlds. It's an alien drama that blends 50's sci-fi with existential themes, the exploration of an outsider, and a study of loss and failure. It's a tale of magic and sorcery. It's written and directed by Ansel Faraj, the filmmaker behind this summer's DOCTOR MABUSE; and it stars Nathan Wilson as Daniel - a lost stranger in a strange land; Kathryn Leigh Scott as the ethereal Aya, Daniel's "mother"; Linden Chiles as tragic magician Nikolas Winter; and Derek Mobraaten as Alex, a young man who helps Daniel along in his journey.

The entire project was conceived and shot as an Internet Webseries from October 2012-January 2013. In its early stages of post production, it was decided to scrap plans for the web series, expand on the story, and release the product as feature film.

Nathan Wilson watched The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) to prepare for his role.

Final film of Linden Chiles. He completed his scenes and ADR two months before he died.

Ansel Faraj has said this is the first in a new franchise trilogy that would connect various strands of the Hollinsworth Productions universe, as well as tell its own set of stories. This film includes the characters of Detective Adam Sera from Old Friends (2010), the magician Nikolas Winter from The Mystic Tales of Nikolas Winter (2012), and some of the Lovecraftian aliens featured in Hunters of the Dark (2011).

The project grew out of several unproduced projects that Ansel Faraj was attached to. The first of which was an alien mystery film in the style of The Twilight Zone (1959), which had been in development for a number of years before falling apart. The second film was a character mash-up parody titled simply "The Characters" - which included the characters of Adam Sera and Copycat from The Burning Within (2012), Natasha from Mr. Twistedface (2011), and Nikolas Winter, which fell apart shortly after the filming of Brother Drop Dead (2012). The third film was a superhero project about a character that was described as being "the Superman to Detective Adam Sera's Batman", which Nathan Wilson was attached to, before he and Ansel Faraj went on to make Doctor Mabuse (2013).

Ansel Faraj read "Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert Heinlein and watched a lot of Late 60's road movies such as Easy Rider (1969) and Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) for inspiration while writing the screenplay.

Jerry Lacy was cast in the film but had to drop out due to scheduling.

Some post conversion 3-D tests were done on the film, but Ansel Faraj ultimately decided against them feeling that it did not fit the "road movie" feel he was going for.
