Short summary

A workaholic father who attempts to visit his daughter during a layover in LA, only to discover that she's disappeared, is forced to team up with her awkward ex-boyfriend to find her over the course of one transformative night.
Six months after that awkward introductory dinner with the tough and workaholic father of his girlfriend Ginnie, Martin, a talented but broke banjo musician, finds Mr Gallo knocking on his door looking for his daughter. Still heartbroken after breaking up with Ginnie, single and clueless, Martin will have no other choice but to hit the road and form an improbable search party with his ex-father-in-law, in an all-night adventure all over west Hollywood. Eventually, by the end of the night, the team will learn how to leave the past behind, move on, and most importantly, open their eyes and live. Nevertheless, where could Ginnie be?

Trailers "All Nighter (2017)"

Martin (Hirsch) and Mr. Gallo (Simmons) recognize their potential for bonding whilst appreciating a Bob Seger song on the car radio. The final song performed by Martin's band is Bob Seger's 'Night Moves' as a testament to their new friendship.

When Mr. Gallo (J.K. Simmons) and Martin (Emile Hirsch) are out to dinner, looking for Ginnie, Mr. Gallo tells a story involving the disappearance of his friend's daughter. He says "Luckily, I know a thing or two about a thing or two". This is a nod to his current Farmers ad campaign. J.K. Simmons stars in the current Farmers Insurance TV commercials, where his punch line is "We know a thing or because we've seen a thing or two".

The food that is used in the film is prepared by Chef Conrad Woodul, one of the top chefs in Los Angeles.

The adult film actress featured in the laptop scene at Martin and Jimothy's apartment is Shawna Leneé.

Emile Hirsch actually learned to play the banjo for this movie and plays and sings the final number.

A small, little indie comedy about a father who has to team up with his daughter's ex-boyfriend in order to find out where she is after it appears to be missing. J.K. Simmons plays the smart ass, witty father; Emile Hirsch takes the role of the "down on his luck", well intentioned but simple ex-boyfriend. Both of which are phenomenal actors and they do fine work here, but I feel as though their talents were almost wasted in this movie. Do not get me wrong however, I thought that this was a decent movie and I do recommend it as a light movie that you could pop on in the afternoon or early evening if you wanted to kill some time. However, I felt as though these two actors should be given much more challenging material than something like this which doesn't supply much depth in terms of character. Putting that aside though, I thought they did a good job and probably kept me from declaring this movie as something forgettable.

The film has some laughs and does capture the awkward moments of their circumstance very well without falling into "Meet the Parents" styled humor territory. It does have a secondary character, played by Taran Killam, that after a while I found to be slightly grating but I never found it to ever completely break the movie. The two leads run into some quirky characters and cumbersome scenarios that kept me entertained. I should clarify though that this movie isn't quite like most shenanigans movies where the characters go through their personal arches over the course of a single night a la "Adventures in Babysitting", "License to Drive", "Hollywood Knights", or "Stretch". This plays the shenanigans a tad bit more low-key and realistic rather than completely over-the-top or all that wacky. It still does show the leads run into a pickle or two and have a few colorful characters along the way; and they do have their own character arches that they go through which are done well enough here.

All around, I thought that this was a passably entertaining movie with a good moral or two. Has a good amount of chuckles. Good actors that may have actually elevated the film to be as decent as it is. It's well made, the narrative is relatively predictable but I like that it never makes anyone the villain when it so easily could have in some cases. So if you feel like watching a quirky, innocent comedy that will entertain you for an hour and a half then I think this will do.

A nice movie to watch, at first it was a bit plain but then it got really funny.

The actors are good, I did not get bored at any point. Maybe the first 10 minutes did not have much action but then everything changed.

It s funny but it also makes you feel like you have been there, in a similar situation.

It s more of a laid-back movie, not one with a complex scenario but it wasn't a waste of time. Made me smile and made my day better.

I loved this movie. I could see why the dad didn't like the boyfriend in the beginning. And then it made me want to find out how they dealt with one another through the night. This movie got shitty ratings on rotten tomatoes but like all good movies it had my attention from start to finish. It was a fun adventure and I loved it the entire time. I rented a movie yesterday with a 90% rating and I couldn't even finish it so the current rating system has to change. I loved this movie, the actors, the story, and it made me feel awesome. That should be all that matters. Death to Rotten Tomatoes!!!

This film was something unexpected. I am a fan of almost all the actors in the film but I loved the chemistry between Hirsch and Simmons. I thought the film was well paced and well acted and It's one film i can watch again (as I have). The direction was great and I love the fact the a young man who is heartbroken is able to live through the past of his love even though broken but he finds himself and he gets to know his ex better than he knew her when they were dating. I loved the film, I thought it was awesome.

So Emile Hirsch and JK Simmons ... now that is a pairing that sounds fun. And I do understand if some may have expected something different from this. But as it is, this is a low budget comedy, dare I say road movie(?), that has a couple of things for it. And that's not just the actors themselves but the set up.

While it's simple, it's also very effective and it does draw quite a few talented actors in smaller roles to rub shoulders with our lead actors. None of us is without fault, so it's not easy seeing others people misery. But when done in a light and funny way (mostly) like in this movie right here, it is quite enjoyable to take that ride. Don't expect this to have Academy Award performances though. Still decent enough overall

Not bad. Moved the time somewhat. I really like j.k. simmons acting, and think he mad this movie much better than it was. I've always liked him, and thought that the "tough dad" part really fitted him.

not the greatest comedy of all time, but not bad at all. worth the hour and a half.

I admit it. I've become a sucker for J.K. Simmons. I like him in just about everything he's in. And that's nice, because he does a lot of 'smaller' films, and I really like smaller films. 'All Nighter', is one of those. There's nothing 'big' happening here, just the story of two (mostly) unconnected people, who unexpectedly come together to go looking for someone. That someone is Ginnie; the daughter of one, and the former girlfriend of the other.

So what is 'All Nighter'? A comedy? A quest? A buddy movie? A heart tugger? Yes . . . . kinda. I suppose it's all those things but, then again, not really any of them. Like I said earlier, it's one of those 'small' movies about a small event in the lives of a few (mostly) ordinary people. No Super-Heroes, no special effects, and ultimately, nothing all that life-altering. At least on the surface . In the end, 'All Nighter' is really just a story about the need for connections in life. How being involved with those around us, is the only meaningful currency we can measure our own wealth with.

Hirsch or Simmons, and usually both together, are onscreen for almost the entire film, and their evolving relationship was enough to keep me interested. It's not the most original of stories, but that's okay. Sometimes a film doesn't need to be, so long as you enjoy spending the next 90 minutes with the people in question. And in this case, it worked out well enough.

There was no point to this story. It's low budget. The script is bad. At least it's short (only one hour and twenty minutes), but it's not enjoyable. Complete waste of time. The actors were nice. But you are kind of waiting for something to happen, some development, and it never comes. It isn't a comedy either (we didn't laugh once).

I like Emile Hirsch and J.K. Simmons, but they were not able to save this movie. It tries to make Ginnie's dad look like something he is not and fails miserably at everything it tries to do. Zero chemistry between all characters besides the two main characters and their relationship is almost strange. If you are bored, give it a try, but I did warn you. There is way too much wrong with this movie. The only reason I could give it 3 stars is because of Hirsch and Simmons. They did a great job in their roles, just bad writing and story.

I must say I am very surprised to see all these negative reviews, and the low score for this movie. I watched it with relatively low expectations, and ended up LOVING IT ! I do NOT understand any of the criticism from the other negative reviewers, I think all actors did a hell of job! It was thrilling and funny from beginning to end, and even very touching.

I do not want to spoil anything so I will not go into details, but trust me, I am sure that MANY of you will love this movie, it had me glued to the screen from the beginning, and I honestly did not want it to end.

To me this is a hidden gem, WATCH IT !

I like both J.K. Simmons and Emile Hirsch but that wasn't enough to make it a good movie. J.K. Simmons shouldn't be in a comedy, he just has not the face for it. The script was not well written, a quite boring story. Two guys going from one point to another trying to find their daughter/ex-girlfriend. The comedy factor was almost nihil to me. I guess I don't have the same sense of humor as other reviewers that thought it was hilarious. There is the odd joke every now and then but certainly not any that you will remember in the future. The positive thing about the movie is that it is not too long, so at least you don't feel like you wasted a lot of time. But if I knew what I know now I would just watch something else.

Ginnie (Analeigh Tipton) is on vacation and her phone is turned off. That doesn't stop Ginnie's father and her ex-boyfriend from thinking she has gone missing. The father is Mr. Gallo (played by J.K. Simmons) and the ex-boyfriend is Martin (played by a bearded and dimwitted Emile Hirsch). They progress through the streets of seedy SoCal, they harbor the notion that it's stupid to walk from place to place in Los Angeles (this was made public by Kevin Dillon in Entourage), they experience some serious hi jinks, and they wind up being arrested in All Nighter, my latest review.

Anyway, "Nighter" plays like a combination of Due Date (just look at the poster), Planes, Trains & Automobiles, and 2015's Grandma. It's a road trip flick, a polar opposite buddy movie, and a shoddy L.A. story all rolled up into one. Whereas Due Date and "Planes" had some sort of purpose or destination, "Nighter" feels almost too lightweight and barely ceases to exist. The whole film could've ended if someone had sooner made a phone call to the right person. That's how frivolous and unnecessary All Nighter appears to an audience.

As for Hirsch and Simmons (mentioned earlier), well they are decent actors who are clearly above this material. Their encounters with each other and everyone else in "Nighter", come off as awkward, cringe- worthy, and thorny. I'm not finished. To the supposed amusement of All Nighter's director (Gavin Wiesen), the side characters Gallo and Martin try to gather clues from, are goofy for the sake of being goofy, annoying for the sake of being annoying, and tactless for the sake of being tactless. They don't feel the need to act like actual human beings. I guess you could call "Nighter" the ultimate City of Angles thread-baring or the ultimate foray into "Hollyweird". Natch.

In conclusion, a year from now when the dust has settled and all of the DVD premieres have curtailed, I see All Nighter being filtered to the bottom of a $4.99 bin at Best Buy. No BS. Rating: 1 and a half stars.

Of note: Growing up in the state of Michigan, I've always appreciated the rocking music of Bob Seger. In "Nighter", Seger's hit "Night Moves" is playing in the background on three different occasions. You see "Night Moves" is without a doubt, a classic. However, it needed to be featured in a different movie, one that is much better than the trivial conch that is All Nighter.

All Nighter features some good actors wasted on a weak "who cares" plot. In fact the most interesting thing about the film is how mature Analeigh Tipton appears these days compared to her teenage look in Crazy Stupid Love.

But it says something about a comedic film when far and away the funniest person is a supporting actor, in this case the the seasoned pro Kristin Schaal providing the best laughs.

The story deals with a 24 hour period where J.k.Simmons, Tipton's screen father and Emile Hirsch, her ex lover, look high and low for Tipton, who, unknown to them, had simply gone on a vacation. Yet instead of filling their search through Los Angeles with exciting adventures such as happened during movies such as Into the Night or After Hours, they simply go bar hopping with no laughs involved.

The moral of the film is supposed to be self awareness and changing for the better.

Absolutely boring. I saw a trailer and it seemed like something worth seeing. First 20 minutes and it's obvious, that the trailer was the best part. J.K. Simmons was not enough, though he did his best. Ginnie and Martin were really bad. And all the exhibition of friends was not funny at all.

When you start watching a movie and the 20 first minutes are boring, it's difficult to keep going. And it takes no time to notice that boring scenes just keep stretching and stretching. You want them to end, but they're there to torture you endlessly.

Did not laugh a single time.

Granted, it's still a bad movie but you can't fault the acting as he and the rest of the cast had almost nothing to work with.

I don't mean to come off as pedantic right out of the gates but just a little helpful hint: awkward and stupid isn't the same thing as funny. In fact, those three things are almost never found together. Knocking over a glass at dinner or having dad find your porn on your computer do not equal humor. Got it? And then we go on to another awkward and dumb situation which is also completely void of humor or any other saving quality so why are we here? This time it's at the home of a couple where the daughter lived after leaving her boyfriend. Wow! That was rough. Please tell me the movie goes in another direction quickly.

And then we learn that the kid doesn't know how to drive so, of course, this will lead us to a completely stupid scene where his lack of driving skills will be thought of as hilarious.

And then the story just sort of unfolds in a totally unpredictable manner. There is no scene with the kid being forced to drive a car. The father isn't made out to be some sort of ninja. It looked like it was going in the direction of some Liam Neeson "I-want-my-daughter-now!" piece of trash gone completely off the rails but then it settles down into an inoffensive mess. . It turns out to be regular people in a somewhat regular situation.

Before seeing this film, I thought JK could walk on water. And truth be told, he's ok in this film, he just got dealt HORRIBLE lines and scenes to act. The whole thing is just a mess, one stupid unbelievable situation after the next. A lot of good talent gone to waste here, including SNL alums Killam and Schaal. I was embarrassed for them in various ridiculous set-ups throughout the movie. The ONLY reason I watched the whole thing was to see how much worse it would get, and that it did. A real turd duster, let me take this one for the team and you all skip it. Life is short, don't give up 90 precious minutes of your time for this gross mess...

"Uh, it's just up that-a-way. That's gotta be the 15th f*cking time you said "that-a-way." Are you Hopalong Cassidy? Who's Hopalong Cassidy?"

"All nighter" is a movie that isn't really bad, but at the same time it's not good either. There are times that I'm lying in my lazy sofa in the weekends, carelessly zapping all channels on my television to see if there's something on it. And then I come across an unknown movie with a famous person playing in it. And after a while I realize that it's not much of a movie anyway. But because I'm too lazy to search for another channel, I watch the movie until the end and finally go to bed without realizing what it was about anyway. Well, "All nighter" is that kind of movie.

The moment J.K. Simmons appeared on the screen, I had a cheer moment and I thought it might be a good movie. Twenty minutes later, I realized J.K. Simmons wasn't playing such a fascinating role as in "Whiplash". He still looks rather strict and discipline-demanding because of his specific looks and bald head. These characteristics were suitable while playing the role of Mr. Gallo, father of a lovely girl called Ginnie (Analeigh Tipton) who's dating Martin (Emile Hirsch), a banjo-playing vegetarian loser. Already during their first meeting at the dinner table, Mr. Gallo consciously or unconsciously looked contemptuously at Martin. When he knocks on Martin's front-door 6 months later to ask where his daughter is hanging out, Martin appears to know nothing about her whereabouts (they aren't a couple anymore, it seems). And this is the beginning of a nightly journey along places where Ginnie was spotted the last time.

Well, if the word cliché hadn't been invented yet, it surely would have happened now. Actually all aspects that appear in this movie have already been used elsewhere. Two totally different persons, each of whom have chosen a different path in their life, are forced to tolerate each other's company a complete night. Obviously, as the night progresses, the two start to have more and more respect for each other. Intense life stories are exchanged. They accidentally discover common interests. And before you know it, all prejudices are set aside and they become friends for life.

Emile Hirsch (who did an excellent job in "Just Jim" in my opinion) is such a typical alternativo who doesn't aim for a well-paid job to build a carefree future. No, he rather spends his days picking' his banjo. To Frank's horror Martin is also a vegetarian, he's allergic to a lot of things and he's a klutz. Probably his daughter drew the same conclusion and exchanged him for a seemingly wealthy yuppie with whom she goes to Bora-Bora.

Perhaps this would-be comedy might be more interesting if Frank and Martin met some fascinating people on their nightly journey. Unfortunately, most characters are extremely annoying individuals. Jimothy (Jon Daly) the junkie who only wears his underpants and a bathrobe while being stoned all the time. Roberta (Christian Scale) and Gary (Taran Kilam), the bickering couple, with Gary showing a rather unhealthy interest for Ginnie. Trevor (Jon Bass) is an arrogant guy who deserved a smack in the face. And then there were a few more supporting roles. The only function they had was to show Frank and Martin the way.

"All nighter" could have been an enjoyable comedy, provided there would be some humor in it. And that's what's missing. There was nothing worth a chuckle or a modest smile. It felt forced and corny. Even Gary's consumption of a large quantity of hallucination-producing mushrooms and his behavior afterwards, wasn't funny. Deep inside, I hoped he would choke in it. And so they move from one place to another where Ginnie no longer comes or works. Frank acts reserved with the heart-broken Martin in tow. And eventually, the reason for Ginnie's absence is quite ordinary and everything works out just fine. I thought "Meet the fockers" (also a future-son-in-law-meets-future-father-in-law disaster scenario) was painful to watch. But this one isn't inferior to the latter. Luckily it was a short pain this time, because this negligible movie lasted only 80 minutes.

This film tells the story of a young musician, who is asked by his ex-girlfriend's father to search for the ex-girlfriend. The search turns out to be less than successful, but highly uneventful, as every lead turns out to be cold.

The story of "All Nighter" is quite funny. On hilarious situation is followed by another, and the jokes just don't stop. The argument between Gary and his wife is funny, though Gary turned out to be a little annoying towards the end. JK Simmons has a magnetic presence about him, his mysterious career adds to this charm. I could not recognise Emile Hirsch, and I did wonder what he has been up to since his breakthrough in "Into the Wild". He has not been in any big films, which is a pity. I enjoyed this film, and thought it was good fun.

I thought Hirsch did OK. Simmons - dare I utter it - not so much. What I believe his character was supposed to undergo would have been some kind of transformation, from up-tight, mysterious dark dude to a nice guy who learns to appreciate the alternative ways of living, a little less conservative, generational gap reloaded and all. This metamorphosis however, Simmons did not transmit in a credible enough fashion, in my opinion. Remember Bob de Niro in the "Meet the parents" Quadrology? That would have been the prize. Simmons just didn't nail it. The rest was OK, somewhat lacking the drive. Solid, a little boring.

This is one of worst comedy movies. In fact it is so bad, that I am confused as to what genre it should belong to. Go watch something else. Not even a single dialogue or situation in this movie made me even grin. Stay away from this crap. In fact I would suggest you to go watch Adam Sandler instead, at least he is funnier. I would only suggest it if you got nothing better to do than watch this.

    Don't bother.

Boring. Fake people. Could easily have been written and directed by Seth Rogen.

Out-take note: At the end Hirsh is playing the banjo on stage but is fingering notes and chords outside of the capo which is further down the neck of his banjo.

I love dumb comedies that sometimes don't have the best storyline or acting but still make you laugh. This was not one of them! The storyline makes no sense, and it tries to be too many things in one film...funny, quirky, random high guy, bro-mance, father-daughter sentimental relationship, dad finding himself.... blah blah. Waste of time to watch..

Finished the new movie the All Nighter. The film was terrible overall. It makes me mad that it even exists. There really wasn't a single redeeming quality in the whole movie. Even J K Simmons could not save this stinker.

The plot was irrelevant and felt boring. The entire plot was slow-paced, unoriginal , predictable , and not remotely fun. You could tell what the film was trying to accomplish and maybe in the hands of more skilled artists it would have been better. Unfortunately the movie fell on its face completely.

Most importantly there was not a single laugh to be had. Jk Simmons played his role well, but just wasn't working with a good script. You can't squeeze gold from a turd. Overall a 3 out of 10.
