Short summary

A skeptical, small town doctor is forced to confront his personal demons in order to save the life of a teenage girl who has become possessed in his family's old house.
A teenage girl and her mom think Crestwick will be a great place for them to have a new beginning but little do they know, the house they are moving into has been plagued by an evil demon known as Nefas dating back into the 1800's. Nefas has fed on the souls of innocent young girls and now has a new target. In order to save this teenage girl and her mother, a skeptical, small town doctor is forced to confront his own demons before another girl suffers a gruesome fate in his family's old house. The film was inspired from real events from the 1870's and has been updated to give a fresh perspective on possession and the pure evil that Nefas has been known to bring.

Don't know what's up with these so called horror movies these days. I don't usually rate this low but this one earned it by far. From the moment the movie starts I feel the b-movie effect lol. The priest is by far the worst actor I've seen. He's actually able to scream at someone who's like within 1 meter like they're miles away lol. Overacting, boring from 50 minutes on and unrealistic in every part. You never see the actors actually feel some kind of emotion. Hell, you can write it in a script and let one act by it, but how come the actor doesn't transfer his emotions to the viewers? Like it never happened it seems, life your role I would say. But in this movie its far from it.

Skip this movie if you are a horror fan like me, hack, skip it if you love to watch any sort of movie!

A Doctor who's recently lost a daughter and a wife, befrienda a young woman and her teenage daughter, after moving into his old house, short afterward a strange things begin to happened. A very Amateuric horror film which give us a fine acting though but the storyline is so familiar, and so overdone.

A DEMON WITHIN is another tired and predictable EXORCIST clone, made on an indie budget in Illinois. There's no FX to speak of here and virtually no horror content, just endless tedium with a few cheesy moments added to the mix. This generic movie rips off all and sundry and has a real tiredness and lethargy on the part of the crew. Who can blame them?

The only other reviewer who calls himself a horror fan, at the time of my writing this rated it low,but at the same time rated one of the worst horror movies of 2017 a 9 out of ten, nuff said for that reviewer. There is some not so good acting in this offering, mainly from the priest and the doctor, but over all it isn't too bad,and the acting from the the two main female characters is fairly good. The storyline suffers from a little slowness now and again but for me this sometimes added to the tension. The story is tried and true possession but if you don't mind that, then this is a not too shabby movie for an evening in,not great by any means, but it could be worse, and I've seen plenty that are.

Decent plot idea but poorly written and the acting is equivalent to a high school play

This movie, had my eyes rolled the entire time. The acting is horridly bad! Whoever did the editing needs to find another career and the person who hired that editor needs to be fired.. matter of fact, all involved needs to be fired! The only movie worse then this is Netflix's "Open House" , which is saying something.....

The only thing that qualifies this as a horror film is just how horrible a film it is! Slow, tropey, awful acting and plot holes galore. Never have I cared less for any of the characters in a film: even the tittular demon was a weiner! I feel bad for the cast and crew who likely hoped they might make money or film cred based on their time involved. Once you read the plot synopsis on line, you're all done and saved yourself 90 minutes or so. Like the review title says, "ugh".

'A Demon Within' drew me into seeing it, with a cool poster/cover, an oddly interesting but very potentially silly premise and as someone with a general appreciation for horror. That it was low-budget, which from frequent personal experience is rarely a good sign due to that there are so many poor ones out there, made me though apprehensive as well as the low rating and poor reviews.

It is sadly however yet another film seen recently, hence some reiteration because the exact same strengths and flaws those films have are present here, that to me was incredibly disappointing considering its potential which it doesn't do anywhere near enough with. 'A Demon Within' is an utter mess, with so many enormous problems. Hardly anything is good here and pretty much everything is wrong in a bad to appalling way.

Lets start with the couple of positives. The lighting is sometimes atmospheric and spooky. Likewise with the setting.

Unfortunately, they are not done justice by the rather direct to video schlocky way it's shot and edited and the drab colour palette, so much so it was hard to appreciate it, it was very clear that the film was made in a rush with no care or enthusiasm.

Going on further to the negatives, the story does feel paper thin, disjointed and over-stretched and some of it feels vague, under-explained in the last third where the film especially became duller, more predictable, more senseless and less scary. Too many characters are too sketchy, very shallow and with nowhere near enough to make one want to endear to them. Their annoying and illogical decision making and behaviours frustrates.

Making the film feel bland and forgettable with not enough heart put into The sound quality is obvious and utilised cheaply (being too loud in the build ups and people's reactions and dreadfully recorded), the music is needlessly melodramatic and it's best not mentioning the lumbering and histrionic acting that shows a huge indifference to the situation and what is going on as well veering into overwrought melodrama. The priest's acting especially is dreadfully overdone that it's embarrassing.

Dialogue can be stilted and rambling, with lots of clichés, and no depth whatsoever, while the pace goes to a standstill very quickly and drags on forever with very little going on worth caring about and useless padding, never recovering. This wouldn't have mattered quite as much if the character development was present or engaging, instead nowhere near enough is learnt about the characters, and the few attempts to do so are neither interesting or illuminating, actually dragging things down. Found too many of the supposedly shocking moments not surprising or unsettling and the supposedly sense of dread dreary. Due to the excessive obviousness, a lot of dumb and vague moments and explanations when attempted, the excessive melodrama and the lack of tension and suspense. Would not have minded the lack of originality (the film is extremely derivative and in a dumbed and watered down way), if the story and atmosphere were at least alright in execution, in reality they were both very poorly done.

A lot of 'A Demon Within' has a lot of undercooked moments lacking in any development or depyj and often nonsensical and confusing character motivations, while too many of the things to make you shocked are far from creative or nail-biting and are pretty tame and easily foreseeable straight off the bat. The ending didn't satisfy and instead came over as dumb and the whole thing felt like an over-stretched-to-beyond-breaking-point short film.

There is not enough threat, and what there is of it tends to be used poorly and so laughably done it doesn't frighten at all. The film is completely unimaginative and more odd than creepy, with ridiculousness and implausibility being taken to the maximum extremes. Everything here is neither creative, suspenseful or nail-biting. Some badly sagging momentum too. The direction is leaden and like their heart was not in it or ill at ease, with the chemistry between the characters and actors coming over as constantly random and shallow. Suspense and creativity are zero, just non-stop predictability, monotony and dullness.

Overall, really poor. 2/10 Bethany Cox

It's not every day that you come across a genuinely terrifying horror film from the modern era. Most of the time they are too cheesy or too gory for my taste. Directors Ayush Banker and Justin LaReau were able to walk the fine line that exists in the genre and create a modern horror film that will scare and delight audiences. Throughout the film, there are sparse but effective CGI additions, like in the beginning where the evil demon, Nefas, explodes out a possessed girls body in a cloud of black smoke. These effects aren't overdone in the film, which adds to the movies realistic feel. Based on real events, the movie details events that actually happened in small-town Crestwick, Illinois. A fantastic film for horror lovers everywhere.

A Demon Within is a chilling, petrifying, terrorizing movie that you won't be able to take your eyes off of! Justin LaReav and Ayush Banker do an excellent job of portraying the demonic possession of a young women who now needs the help of a priest, a doctor, and her loving mother in order to escape the demon that lurks within her. There are some humorous parts of the movie, but Charlotte, played by Patricia Ashley, does a tremendous job of acting out the actual exorcism. I suggest this film to the horror-movie lovers out there and those who are interested in demonic possession and exorcism. I wouldn't miss out on this movie if I were you!

As a horror movie buff, I struggle to find modern horror films that are novel and engaging. Too often they recycle the same tired formulas and rely on cheap tactics like jump scares and gratuitous gore. At first glance, A Demon Within appears destined to fall into the same trap. The premise-a demonic possession threatens a family after they move into a new house-has been done before. But the beauty of A Demon Within is the gusto with which it treads this well-worn ground. Directors Ayush Banker and Justin LaReau have created a masterpiece of indie horror, fraught with tension and the eerie ambiance that only small-town America can provide. This gives Nefas, the film's titular demon, a terrifying presence even when it is not on screen, most felt in the lethargy and alcoholic depression of Dr. Jeremy Miller, whose family was previously victimized by the demon. The film features some very strong performances despite an inexperienced cast and a surprisingly thorough original score. I would strongly recommend it to any horror fans looking for something captivatingly terrifying. Just make sure you leave the lights on.

I could not get enough of this film! You don't often find character development in horror movies, but this one is full of it. I really enjoyed that the cast was small and intimate, I wasn't struggling to keep up when the scenes got dark and scary. The budding relationship between Clint Hummel and Charlene Amoia distracted me from the horror. Overall it was a good scare and definitely kept me out of my basement for awhile. I would suggest you give it a go if you're into horror films and budding romances!

A Demon Within is a classic possession horror film with a little bit of a twist. I enjoyed this horror movie in all of its indie-ness. From an entertainment standpoint I was just that, entertained. The movie started quick and didn't take too long to get around to the ghost shenanigans. The characters were likeable and I definitely found myself rooting for the good guys. From a cinematic standpoint, I think the movie had a number of really great shots. The lighting was solid. The composition was unique but nothing that was off putting. Overall, I enjoyed this movie. This wasn't a waste of my time like other indie movies have been. I suggest you give it a watch.

The horror genre has been experiencing a resurgence in quality the last few years and A Demon Within has continued that trend. The film is intense and terrifying especially at the end before it pulls the rug out from under you with an unexpected twist. I loved the camera work, music, and especially the relatable characters. The music and camera work, built suspense while the actors made you believe every moment of terror. The fact that it's based on real life demonic encounters makes everything even more believable and terrifying. The film kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. If you're not a fan of horror, this movie also has plenty of moments with romance and dark humor which makes great for everyone. I strongly recommend A Demon Within to anyone who loves horror, dark humor, and romance

A Demon Within is a horror movie that establishes its direction right from the opening shot. It's like the 21st Century's version of The Exorcist, following the lives of a mother and daughter who relocate to a small town in Illinois. Justin LaReau and Ayush Banker's cinematic production reminds lovers of horror of that titillating feeling called fear. Drawing on influences from the films that came before it, A Demon Within is able to tell the unnaturally chilling tale of the demon Nefas who seemingly takes no breaks in its moves to possess the bodies of innocent young women who are unlucky enough to live in the house which it has deemed its preferred hunting ground. Inspired by rumors of the supposed demon that haunts LaReau's real life hometown, Nefas is a terrifying presence in the film that'll leave even the most fearless of viewers with an uncomfortable sense of dread. It is a stunning example of what happens when storytelling makes a flawless transition onto the screen.

This film reminds me of some horror classics like The Ring, The Exorcist- films I would never watch on my own years ago. I wanted to have a great time with my friends and watched A Demon Within a couple of weeks ago. This film is perfect for you if you love demons and supernatural stories. There are scenes that creeped me and my friends out in ways we were not expecting and that is what I enjoyed most about this film. The element of surprise is on point, mixed with a master use of makeup and lighting that will get you thrilled more times that you will expect during its whole duration. The directors, Justin LaReau and Ayush Banker, together with the editor successfully pulled together a dance of tranquility and horror in consecutive scenes; taking the audience by surprise and making one of the most unexpected moments in films that I have had the pleasure to watch lately. Totally recommended if you want to watch something different, inspiring, and original within the horror market.

I caught this one on Showtime Beyond channel, and I liked it! It has a dark, creepy atmospheric feel, and the movie doesn't waste time on useless characters. Patricia Ashley is fantastic as the possessed girl! She definitely has the eyes, and the haunting stare that is tailor made for a role like this, and I hope to see her in many more similar roles. Get your popcorn and drink ready, but beware, better leave the lights on for this one, this one will get to you!

A Demon Within is the kind of film that terrorizes you before you go to sleep. This sounds like a horrible thing but it just goes to show how scary of a film it really was. The director Justin Lareau really show that he knows what he's doing with demonic movies with A Demon Within. If you like "The Conjuring" or "Insidious" then you should watch this movie because the possession scenes in all three were creepy as hell. My only advice is just don't watch this movie alone because I was afraid a demon was going to come from within my closet. This movie really did a number on me. If you're a horror fan like me then please go watch it because I loved it.
