Short summary

Dexter has decided to make a new life for himself with Hannah and Harrison but not before he takes care of the Brain Surgeon. In searching Zach Hamilton's photo studio he finds a clump of hair and blood hidden under a table. When Dexter runs the sample against the DNA database he finds a familial match - to Dr. Evelyn Vogel. Somewhat incredulous at his revelation, Vogel explains that she once had two sons, the eldest of which killed the other. He was placed in a mental institution but died in fire. Dexter believes he must have survived and soon has him identified. Deb meanwhile is having second thoughts about returning to Miami Metro. She's also agreed to let Hannah, who is now being sought by a Federal Marshall, hide out at her house.

When the personal information for Dr. Evelyn Vogel appears on Dexter's computer screen, her listed date of birth, February 5th 1946, is the actual birth date of Charlotte Rampling, the actress portraying Dr. Vogel.

The character of Oliver Saxon's name is most likely based on renowned author and neurologist Oliver Sacks who also studied neuropatholgy.

Dexter investigates the death of Zack in his studio with Dr. Vogel and he finds hair and blood under a table. Soon her discovers that the DNA match with Dr. Vogel's and he learns that she had two son and one of them was murdered by the older, Daniel, who was interned in a mental institution and died in a fire. Dexter believes that Daniel might have faked his death and soon he discovers that he is Oliver Saxon. Dexter also decides to travel abroad with Hannah and Harrison and live in Argentina, but a federal officer is seeking her out. Dexter asks Debra if she could hide Hannah at home and she reluctantly agrees. Debra is invited to return to the Miami Metro but she hesitates due to her situation with Hannah. Dexter plots a scheme luring Dr. Vogel to catch Oliver Saxon before traveling.

"Make Your Own Kind of Music" is another weak episode of this season. Dexter's profile is very different from the previous season and I hope this series have a good conclusion. Dexter deserves it. His connection with Dr. Vogel is weird and Dexter is easily manipulated by this psychiatrist. Hannah is chased by the police, has her photo broadcast but she does not wear a hat or dyes her hair. My vote is seven.

I cant believe how pretentious this show has become !! The quality of Dexter had definitely come down after the first 4 seasons, but it still was decent .. Not any more !! This season started on a good note but now its just hollow. I think the Zach Hamilton track and the Hannah track in this season show just how badly out of ideas the writers are.

This season I think, has more plot holes than the last three put together and this episode has bigger plot holes than any other episode of this season. I mean ... taking the photo of a kid and adding forty years to the photo to see how he now looks like ?! You've got to be kidding me !! Apparently, even the hairstyle hasn't changed!

I have been trying a lot to like this season, but the writers sure have a way to make it more and more difficult for me, episode after episode !! This is where I give up!

I was a huge fan of Dexter and it is truly sad to see how a series which used to once be an amazing thriller, now simply feels pretentious and forced !!

Sadly this season has been on average, quite terrible. As have the previous 4 seasons. Trinity was the last good thing that existed in the universe that is Dexter.

I don't know why the writers decided to segregate the seasons by making three to four subplots take over instead of an over arcing storyline like Trinity, or the Ice Truck Killer. It's tacky and it feels like you are being jerked around.

Besides the fact I think the show has gone beyond its prime, I think last season should have been it. The whole Lugerta knowing Dexter etc was the strongest and most threatening story line that really had huge potential.

The final season, in my opinion should involve Dexter being discovered one or two episodes in. Thus forcing him to be on the run/trying to clean up his mess etc for the rest of the season. This whole love sick puppy nonsense is boring and WAY out of Character for Dexter. 'I'm Dexter, I have feelings now because the story demands it' Yes I know he's gone through the motions with feelings in all the season past but he has never really developed as a character. Season to season he has the same morals. The same vision. Even though multiple times he has specifically said that he is a new man ... he doesn't change.

We should lose the Dexter we once knew. Lose the morally ground character he is. Make him go a little crazy and not be able to go back. make the final season worth something.

The whole Hannah and Dex thing is Either setting up for a happy ending for him or they'll kill them all in the last episode. Either way I am sure they wont be able to pull it off.

Of course I'll be watching it but my expectations will be low.

Everyone was waiting for this final season of Dexter, but what we are looking at is one of the weakest seasons ever. The dialogs remind me of Beverly Hills 902 10, the plot lacks any excitement or a moment of surprise.

It looks like the creators decided to put too many subplots and no leading main idea, which will hold it together. We are watching Dexter / Hannah love story, Debra / Queen, Queen / Jamie, Dexter / Vogel, Queen / Batista, Masuka / His Daughter etc... The whole plot is being cut into pieces and it is boring as a whole. You are just sitting and listening to dull dialogs and no action, which you are expecting of the final season.

I am feared how this would end. I was hoping that the last season will be comparable to the first season of Dexter (Ice Truck Killer one) which was the best ever. But so far I doubt about it and are waiting for the worst to come :)

Every time I wanna throw a few words about an episode, I always wanna talk about the previews of the next one. I mean, the previews work. "If it don't run, chrome it!" The secret is to create expectations, and they do.

The show runs OK... but just OK! I am not going to go real far back. For instance last season. It was excellent. This one, though, the grand finale, not so much!

I am a loyal fan of the show and of course I watch it every Sunday, and I put it higher than the vast majority of other TV shows, but let's be honest, there is no big bang here... (hopefully it is (still) building up, but 3 ep's to go and so far not so good)

I was expecting the episode to pick up exactly when the last one left off. Instead, there was another chronological jump, not awfully big, but anticlimactic.

Let me agree with a fellow reviewer on the fact that we don't really need to see a soap opera of Dexter's. OK, we saw him feeling his feelings, but I love you, you're my light and my universe, be with me, it is not really the show I started watching 7-8 years ago, or even more recently.

Not few times did I say that I am not sure about what Dr. Vogel is up to. Well, finally we took a peek of what's going on. Mixed feelings about that. I had two colliding reactions. On one side I was, like, "Yes! I knew it", and on the other "Naaah! Reeeally?".

New info about Dr. Vogel's background and past. Another cheaply put detail of her son who, guess what, she thought he died, but he did not. He's clever, sharp, psycho... And with a little photo-shop and a facial recognition software Dexter shazamed his identity!

He could have asked Debra after all!! I mean, she talked to Jamie for a minute and she automatically went there, to Cassie's new, pushy, soon- to-be-sent-home boyfriend!

It all seemed just a tad too rushed up until now!

To the show's credit, the subterranean impact of Elway's feelings about Debra is kicking in. Not, of course, the way he'd want. He called up a federal Marshal to find Hannah and get the reward money... and to get to Debra for her withdrawal from the case -and his case- with my last point coming from deduction and presumption. He even essentially kicks her out her (his) office.

The federal Marshal seems highly dangerous. He is going to tear things apart. From a director's standpoint he does obvious moves to manipulate Dexter, but Dexter's inner confliction doesn't allow him to think clearly and see them. Good scene with the Marshal approaching Harrison. I believe that many viewers thought Harrison was going to give Hannah's name away triggering a new wave of suspicions. He said it was his mom, though! Easy cover-up for Dexter saying it was Rita!

Getting down to business now, Dexter is using one of Hannah's potions to drug Vogel because she doesn't agree with him on taking her son in and locking him in a psych-ward in order to "cure" him of his psychopathy. Let me underline here that Dr. Vogel was talking about her son in way that showed she already knew him. I mean he was her son, of course. I mean she knew him, knew him... Anyway!

Interpreting Mama Cass's song, Make Your Own Kind of Music, Dexter is going to the coffee shop where Dr. Vogel used to take her son to when he was a kid. After waiting a while, Dexter follows him to his car with the the usual good intentions... sedate and kill him! Daniel (Vogel's son) gets in his car, turns and stares at Dexter and he drives off. Dexter then finds his tires sliced! Daniel had spotted him long ago. That, or he was already tipped off by someone... Let's say Vogel (my opinion and speculation)!

Dexter rushes to Vogel's house afraid that Daniel is headed there to kill her. She is alive, and she talks to Dexter making him reveal that it was all his plan and not hers; that, in order for Daniel from the other room to hear it.

While talking with her, Dexter actually spills in a second his whole plan with Hannah. He did say only Deb will know, but here he is revealing it to Vogel. As he walks away, he is thinking to himself that Vogel is on her own now... blah blah... sort of what he said about Miguel Prado in season 3. When ever did that work for him?

I tried to stick with the main plot! There are other interesting happenings in the episode, mostly about Deb... and Quinn among others! Something inside me celebrated when he kissed her!

Anyway, I am not going to dis the episode. I strongly believe that the same story would be an astounding novel, but for some reason it doesn't leave the impression we'd like on film. I do not like the introduction of the character of Vogel, and her son, and how pivotal role all of them have and will play in Dexter's life!

Dexter is becoming more and more predictable in its road to culmination. This season just does not seem to be the final one. Hannah getting back and Dexter falling in love again!....oops I don't know, quite simply not cut out for the grand finale which it certainly promised to deliver. It lacks the intensity and storyline of Season 4 nor the exciting kills matched to any other season. Even the climax of this episode is somewhat predictable once you see Dr. Vogel opening the door for Dexter. I'm anxiously waiting what the creators of this wonderful show can array in the final episode. Hope it will make up for the tedious show they've put up already.

Jesus Christ what is happening to Dexter. Thank the writers for turning Dexter into a little stupid love puppy for Hannah. Seriously, theses last three episodes Dexter is not even himself anymore. Do we really need to hear Dexter say "I love you Hannah", "Be with me Hannah," "Hannah" every single damn time their with each other or even when Dexter is alone. Hell theses last few episodes with the return of Hannah is greatly putting this season downhill.

Honestly, this episode was nowhere surprising leading to nothing. Just another filler episode with more useless scenes of Dexter and Hannah. Is this really the final season of Dexter we are witnessing. The only good thing about the episode is that we they finally reveal who Brain Surgeon is.

This season has been like a roller coaster ride. The start was a bit shaky. Then we get our thrills. Spiraling downwards and then up again. But the ending is always disappointing. You feel that it should be more to it.

I'm a big fan of the show. But I hate the direction Dexter is heading. He has become so damn docile. It's not fun anymore, the Dexter we knew was intelligent. Now he's just dumb, and you just want to bury your head in your hands while watching this numskull doing the same mistakes over and over again. Oh god indeed Dexter.

I actually liked Zach. I thought he, after a bad start, turned out quite interesting. But in pure Dexter style, when harmony shows, it quickly turns deadly. But by doing that, the writers killed off the only new character with a bit of flare and persona.

We are now stuck with Vogel. Her son. And Elway. One of these will end this magnificent show. But either of them are worth it. Prepare for mediocre.

Are We There Yet? made clear that Dexter did not actually kill "brain surgeon" and he or she is still alive. The same time, Zach Hamilton turns out not to be a killer of those he was accused, on the contrary this young psychopath learned literally everything from Morgan and therefore followed the code. (I still can't get over his death)

Make Your Own Kind of Music is more relaxing episode, it does not suggest some important plot twists, but it explores many new things we might be guessing and did not believe. This episode takes look at three major points: Hannah & Dexter further relationship, "brain surgeon case"/Cassie's murder and Debra.

In Are We There Yet Dexter asked Hannah to stay to move forward together and she happily accepted the invitation. But this is never going to be easy, since Hannah is already chased by FBI. Dexter decides to take care of it himself, alongside many other problems he's to deal with. Dr. Vogel, as always, genuinely questions his ability to succeed anymore. He literally is starting to be human. As a fan of cold blood serial killer, I don't enjoy this much, but on the other hand, he seems more real now.

Some may think that Dexter falling in love with Hannah just ruins his character as an example of perfection. Yes, maybe. But this is exactly how things end. Morgans has always been perfect killer, no one could ever catch him, because he does not simply make mistakes. If we want this show to end, he MUST make mistakes and the only way to do so is Hannah - a distraction from perfection. I believe writers did a great job to bring her back to his life, this will definitely lead to very logical, dramatic and perfect finale.

In this episode Dex successfully chases "brain surgeon", but there is someone who keeps him from killing him and this is Dr. Vogel. When I watched the previous episode, I was sure that the killer was Evelyn, but I was wrong, there is much more truth behind this story and I bet it will explode in a bad way for Morgan.

Debra is thinking of moving back to Miami Metro, she starts helping Quinn in Cassie's case. However she has not made her mind yet, but I am pretty sure, we'll see the old Deb.

This episode was interesting in terms of opening some secret holes for the next ones, which I really hope are going to be massively jaw- dropping and surprising.

For those of you who have been so negative about where the show has been heading please consider this. Have you ever taken thought to why you "hate" it so much? Have you actually considered that there may be a reason for why they're going in this direction? The purpose of the show is to show Dexter's evolution of a monster trying to become human. You need to understand the basic psychology behind the character. Those of you saying he should go back to killing need to stop and think about WHERE DEXTER IS NOW. If you really want to see him just killing people then go watch the first season. This is NOT what Dexter was EVER about. You are completely misinterpreting the show's message. Yes, it's an R/M-Rated show. It's filled with mature content. All the writers actually do their research on this stuff. Believe me, they know what they're talking about. They've embodied this world and this character for 8 years. As a writer, I've been interested in seeing the behind the scenes and have watched probably every interview with the actors and writers and seen how much they've put into the show. Every second of Dexter is right FOR Dexter. This is a character driven show. He has to always be changing. It's real and that's what you can do with television as apposed to film. They have time to develop this character over time and really give him depth. I mean, isn't that what all actors are looking for? I know I would get sick of having to be in the same state of mind and only feeling one emotion (or none at all). Don't expect him to just stay the same and be a killer. Not only is that inhumane but it gets old and stale. Characters NEED change. The entire series he's been trying to become more human. More real. Every character and every action has been to move this character forward. We are here to take this journey with this character driven show. The writers have taken on one of the most complex characters in television history. He really has evolved in a realistic and psychological way. He's grown. Not many shows have done that. This show is not comparable to any. It is what it is. The seasons are what they are and Dexter is who he is. Put yourself in the writer's shoes for once. Don't you think they believe in what they're doing? Wouldn't you? They've dedicated 8 years to this. It's their baby. It's like telling a parent how to raise a child. Sure they're some bad parents but go watch an interview with some of these writers. They're pretty knowledgeable in the field that they are in. What if they said that you were bad at what you think you're good at? Are you a screenwriter yourself? Some maybe but most of you aren't. All I'm asking is take a moment to think when you say "I hate this" or "this season sucks" or "the writers should go die". There are true Dexter fans out there. If you really dislike where the show is heading then stop. Don't sit and complain. Go out there and show us what you think a good show should be like. Yes, nothing is perfect, but there's no need for all the negativity. Why sit and complain about a show you don't even like when you could be out there watching a show you do? Either enjoy the ride or get off.
