Sgt. Al Bogart does a favor for Cal Calhoun and in return wants Calhoun to return the gesture. It's a shadow job on a crook named Sid Lucas. Bogart wants no questions asked and no other cops involved. Cal is puzzled but because of Bogart's sterling reputation as a steady, reliable desk cop he accepts the job.
