Short summary

Meet Meredith Grey. Daughter of famous surgeon Ellis Grey and currently a first year intern at Seattle Grace Hospital. On her first day, she meets her fellow interns: Cristina Yang, a highly competitive Stanford graduate. George O'Malley, a quirky yet warm hearted guy. Izzie Stevens, a former model who's always optimistic. Overseeing them is Miranda Bailey, dubbed by her coworkers "The Nazi". Meredith also gets a surprise when she realizes that her one night stand from the night before is her new boss.

The character Alex (Justin Chambers) wasn't in the original pilot, so his scenes were filmed later on and in re-shoots.

The cut scene of the sun rising in fast motion (midway through their 48 hour shift) is actually a shot of the sun setting in Norfolk, Virginia that is played in reverse to make it look like a sunrise. Look closely and you can see the cars are going backwards.

Every episode of the show is named after a famous song. "A Hard Day's Night" is a song by The Beatles.

Originally, the writers and creator wanted Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) and Isaiah Washington (Preston Burke) to be a couple. Ellen vetoed the suggestion because it too closely mirrored her personal life. Ellen is married to Chris Ivery.

Alex Karev is the first one to refer to George O'Malley as '007.'

Stethoscope trivia:

  • Dr Meredith Grey uses a Littmann Classic II SE.
  • Dr Cristina Yang and Dr Isobel "Izzie" Stevens uses a Littman Master Classic II.
  • Dr George O'Malley uses a Litmann Master Cardiology.
  • In later seasons, Dr Preston Burke and Dr Yang uses a Littman Electronic Stethoscope Model 3000.

The first song that is heard is "Portions for Foxes". It is also the first song played in season 9 episode 1. This is after the plane crash and new interns are starting their first day at the hospital like Merediths first day as an intern.

This is the first appearance of Steven W Bailey as an anesthesiologist named Jeremy. Later he is recast as Joe, the bartender/ owner of Emerald City Bar where the surgeons frequent.

This is the first of two appearances of the character Katie Bryce. Her first appearance is in A Hard Day's Night treated by Dr. Derek Shepherd and her second appearance is in My Next Life treated by Dr. Amelia Shepherd, which makes a 255 episode gap between her two appearances, the longest gap between two appearances in the show.

E.R., House, Nip/Tuck... Seriously, was there any real need of another hospital drama? Probably not. Does that mean Grey's Anatomy is a load of rubbish? Certainly not. It just isn't as good as the aforementioned serials.

The main problem seems to be the fact that when you name a show after the leading character, said person should be a little out of the ordinary. Exhibit A: Buffy (and its spin-off Angel), Huff and, again, House - three programs featuring edgy, scarred protagonists who would like to make a difference but struggle to accept themselves. What does Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) have that makes her so special? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. In fact, the Seattle Grace Hospital intern who got in because of her famous mother (Kate Burton) is the least interesting character of the first episode, and that's something that stuck for the rest of the inaugural season.

Not that the concept itself is bad: having Meredith endure a 48-hour shift on her first day at work and then realize her boss, Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), is actually the man she slept with the night before is a fun idea, if used the right way. Unfortunately, the right way is not blasting the viewer's ears with pseudo-philosophical reflections, told in a never-ending voice-over that is more often than not annoying: sure, it worked for Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City or, staying in the medical field, Zach Braff in Scrubs, but those shows are funny and original - Grey's Anatomy, on the other hand, sets out to satirize the clichés of the genre, and succeeds admirably: the gallery of supporting characters is amazing, from the hard-working overachiever (Sandra Oh, the cast's standout) to the anxious momma's boy (T.R. Knight) via the strict supervisors (Isaiah Washington and Chandra Wilson). Shame creator Shonda Rhimes sacrifices their screen-time in favor of Meredith's pointless musings.

And yet I like the show. How come? Well, the writing gets sharper in later seasons, and so does the narrative impact of the surgical procedures (whereas Season One is a soap opera, with less operating tables and more sex); the supporting cast is perfect (Oh and Dempsey especially); and despite the overall uninspired narration the series never gets boring, courtesy of a pace that leaves no room for dead air.

In short: a polished, if rather shallow opening episode. It ain't E.R., but hey, no one ever said it had to be.

I love this episode. I think it's a great Series Premiere, a great start to a wonderful show.

In this episode, Meredith Grey, the daughter of the famous surgeon, Ellie Grey, begins her residency at Seattle Grace Hospital. She's starting her intern year, and is hoping to do very well. She starts her day by kicking out a guy she randomly hooked up with the night before, Derek. But later when she gets her work assignments from her resident, Dr. Bailey, she realizes that Derek is actually one of her attendings, being the Head of Neurology. Which she is very shocked to find out. Her other interns aren't all as nice as she is, one is very perky, one is very competitive, and one is goofy and one is an ass. She and her fellow interns race to finish their first forty-eight hour shift, and solve the case of a mystery illness before the patient dies.

Fun Fact: Every episode is named after a song, this episode's song is by The Beatles.

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Freaking Ridonkulous.

At 32:22 of S1 E1 Christina continues calling Merideth out with "I don't get picked for surgeries 'cause I slept with my boss, and I didn't get into med school 'cause I have a famous mother." With Izzie sitting next to her. If Izzie "knows" now, how can it be a shock or surprise in S1 E7? And why would she encourage George to ask out someone she "knows" has something going on with someone else ( the boss who assigned her the surgeries-Derek Sheppard )?
