They were university students together and unbeknown to Otto then, Kirov was already a spy shopping the more radical students to the authorities. Otto had run into Kirov in Paris struck up a friendship with him but by the time he had set Kirov up for the kill, so to speak, ...

The newspaper article ("Von der Bühne auf die Barrikaden") Smiley uses to conceal the documents he is reading on the train back to Hamburg dates his train journey to the week from October 2nd, 1981 to October 8th, 1981, assuming that Smiley picked up the current issue of the weekly at a newsstand.
