Short summary
Jared Scott Mercier thought he could shoot Madison Hall in 17 days. By day 3 he realized how wrong he was and had to completely reinvent the schedule, which ended up clocking in at 38 days.
Madison Hall is based on real events that took place at Arizona State University from the Fall of 2002 to the Spring of 2003. The actual dorm, Sahuaro, was demolished in 2007.
Director Jared Scott Mercier and actor 'Colin Chan Redemer' where actually arrested for going in the tunnels underneath ASU along with one of their friends on April 24th, 2003. Their friend wore the same model air filter seen in the film.
Almost 70% of Madison Hall is ADR. (dialog recorded in post production)
Jared Scott Mercier started writing the script in 2004. Pre-production started in November of 2005. Shooting started in September of 2006 and wrapped in December of 2006. There were 8 days of re-shoots in April and May of 2007 and the edit was finally locked in February of 2008. It then took 14 months to complete all the sound work, with the project being completed on April 9th, 2009.
Actor Vic Martinez was pulled over by a police officer in a police car while he was dressed as a police officer and driving a police car.
The line "I have it memorized" spoken by character Jason was an add-lib by actor 'Jonathan Baranick'.
The "philanthropy" scene took 4 tries to shoot. Finally, in the spring of 2007, Jared Scott Mercier was able to convince every film faculty member of ASU to offer extra credit to students who attended the shoot to be an extra in the audience. He even got a professor to walk her entire lecture class half a mile to the shoot to be extras.
Madison Hall was shot on Panasonic DVXs. These were the only cameras the film school had available. The school had the HD versions of the camera, the HVX. But they would not check them out to students for the first year of the program.
Madison Hall is the first feature film made by students enrolled in the new school of Theater and Film at ASU.
