Short summary
Nelson Eddy - 33 at the time - was required to do a screen test for the film). Eddy's test took 58 takes and even the best was determined to be awful. MGM studio head Louis B. Mayer overruled everyone and ordered that he be only used for a singing sequence in the film.
Footage of Mickey Rooney performing onstage in this film, as Ted Hackett III as a child, was later reprized in Babes in Arms (1939) to show the central character Mickey Moran (Rooney) as a child.
The plot has many similarities to the life of Buster Keaton, plus the film was made at a time when friction between Keaton and MGM was increasing, leading to speculation that it was a way for MGM to get back at him'
This film originated in an unreleased musical revue, The March of Time (1930), which was to have featured real and recreated vaudeville star acts. When that project was abandoned, MGM tried to salvage the footage by creating a new story into which they could insert footage shot for the earlier project. Some of the inserted footage contained shots of well-known performers who had only been in the earlier film, such as Fay Templeton, Marie Dressler, William Collier Sr., and DeWolf Hopper Sr., but since almost all of the incorporated footage was in long shot, most of these actors, if present, are impossible to identify. A copyright continuity of the film, however, suggests that they are present, even if unrecognizably so. Dressler, however, is mentioned by characters in the movie.
This film was originally intended to include a lot of footage from the uncompleted The March of Time (1930), much of it in 2-strip Technicolor, but most of it seems to be missing from the surviving version, as shown on Turner Classic Movies, and there is no color footage anywhere to be seen.
Two of The Three Stooges, Moe Howard and Curly Howard, appear almost unrecognizably as clowns Otto and Fritz, who rough up Russell Hardie backstage.
Film debut of Nelson Eddy.
This film's earliest telecasts took place in New York City Monday 19 August 1957 on WCBS (Channel 2), followed by Philadelphia Monday 2 September 1957 on WFIL (Channel 6); it first aired in New Haven CT 17 September 1957 on WNHC (Channel 8), in Seattle 19 September 1957 on KING (Channel 5), in Miami 20 September 1957 on WCKT (Channel 7), in Chicago 26 September 1957 on WBBM (Channel 2), in Portland OR 3 October 1957 on KGW (Channel 8), in Cincinnati 15 October 1957 on WXIX (Channel 19) (Newport KY), in Los Angeles 22 January 1958 on KTTV (Channel 11), and in Phoenix 17 May 1958 on KPHO (Channel 5); in San Francisco its first documented airing did not take place until 31 January 1963 on KGO (Channel 7).
The "March of Time Fantasie" midway thru the film was originally intended to be used in the abandoned _The March of Time (1930)_ and runs about 250 ft (75 m). In it, Joe Weber, Lew Fields, Barney Fagan, William Collier Sr., Marie Dressler and Fay Templeton join together with a chorus of five hundred to perform a medley of old-time numbers, including "Bedelia", sing by Templeton, and "A Hot Time in the Old Town" sung by Josephine Sable.
Buster Keaton was part of the cast of the unreleased The March of Time (1930), though none of his scenes were used in this film.
MGM reportedly planned to have Otto Kruger and Aline MacMahon in the film, though neither eventually made the picture.
Original footage was directed by Willard Mack. Jules White directed retakes and additional new footage.
