Trailers "The Happening (2008)"
Mark Wahlberg admitted that he regrets working on this movie, but said, "You can't blame me for wanting to try to play a science teacher. At least I wasn't playing a cop or a crook."
Director M. Night Shyamalan's first film in which he does not physically appear for a cameo. He is the voice of "Joey," who calls Alma a few times throughout the movie. The audience never sees him, nor learns of his fate.
The movie was shot completely in sequence.
M. Night Shyamalan wrote the screenplay with Mark Wahlberg in mind for the lead role.
The DVD also contains a deleted scene of a piano recital that suddenly becomes tragic (captured on cellphone video), and extended, more gruesome versions of the lion attack and porch shooting scenes.
(at around 53 mins) At one point, Elliot talks about primordial bacteria in Australia killing off fishermen. Pyrethrins are a neurotoxin derived from Chrysanthemum plants, specifically those native to Australia. The toxin is commonly found in organic insecticides. Pyrethrins are highly toxic to bees.
Bystander apathy is a real psychological phenomenon, with a strong theoretical and evidential base.
The picture that Julian gives to Jess of her parents is a picture of Julian with Ashlyn Sanchez's real-life mother, Charity Renee Sanchez.
The film's tagline, "We've sensed it. We've seen the signs. Now...it's happening," referring to M. Night Shyamalan, who wrote and directed The Sixth Sense (1999), Signs (2002), and The Happening (2008).
Plants have evolved some defenses. One plant, when defoliated by deer, releases a pheromone to "warn" other plants to produce less tasty leaves.
In a deleted scene, Elliot and Alma have a fight, then make up. This scene was intended to serve as the movie's introduction. The filmmakers removed it, so the audience could learn about the couple's issues as the narrative unfolded. The scene appears on the DVD.
M. Night Shyamalan's first R-rated film.
Mark Wahlberg's line "Be scientific, douchebag" was improvised.
The students' hypotheses about the bee disappearance, include global warming and atomic, biological, or chemical contamination. The nuclear and greenhouse "plants," which symbolize those theories, literally face one another in Filbert, Pennsylvania.
As of January 2019, this is the shortest film of M. Night Shyamalan's career, with a running time of 91 minutes.
According to M. Night Shyamalan, 85% of the movie takes place outside.
Amy Adams was considered to play Alma, but declined.
(at around 32 mins) The exact answer to Julian's math riddle, with the average month having 30 days, is $10,737,418.23. (The answer is not $10,737,418.24, because Julian is asking about the total sum of the amounts from all days, and every amount is an even number except the amount on the first day: $0.01. Therefore the total sum must be an odd number of cents.) In addition, when the month in question has 31 days, then $10,737,418.24 would be the amount on the 31st day and the total sum after 31 days would be $21,474,836.47.
Shot in 44 days. Shooting started August 6, 2007, exactly eight years after the theatrical release of The Sixth Sense (1999).
(at around 55 mins) When Elliot, Jared, and Josh run past the billboard for ClearHill Community Deluxe Homes, the motto reads "You Deserve This".
The tagline "It's Happening" was also used in Signs (2002).
This movie marked the second collaboration between Frank Collison and M. Night Shyamalan, after previously working together on The Village (2004).
(at around 1h 21 mins) When Elliot drops Jess off at the bus, near the end, they stand in front of the same townhouse complex used in Rocky (1976).
One of the locations used for filming was "The G Lodge," a restaurant located in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.
The word "happen" and variations of it are said 25 times throughout the movie.
Frank Collison, who plays the nursery owner in the movie, played "Victor" in The Village (2004).
Zooey Deschanel's character is named Alma. In real life, Mark Wahlberg's mother's name is Alma.
A "Happening" can refer to a hippie-era demonstration or performance artwork.
(at around 1h 23 mins) Just after Alma reads the result of her pregnancy test, the camera zooms to her face. Looking closely, her left eye appears to be heart-shaped. Zooming in, reveals that an overhead light is reflecting off her eye, giving the heart shaped appearance. If you zoom in on her other eye, it also appears to be heart-shaped, right before the next scene, but you can also see the overhead light.
